  • Subcontract Coordination in Construction
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Economics. - 0925-5273 .- 1873-7579. ; 56-57, s. 503-509

    • The building industry in Sweden has for the last five years been under hard pressure to reduce costs, and lead times, while at the same time improving quality. During this period the range of services such as air distribution, heating, cooling and electrical systems has continued to increase, creating more complex buildings. Today, we encounter problems with communication, boundaries between subcontractors, too many people in the same place at the wrong time and too little emphasis on the testing phase. In order to meet customer's expectations, to have a fully functional and tested product at a given time, several main contractors in Sweden have started to use a special subcontract coordinator in an effort to reduce problems. The case study method was used to find out how the subcontract coordinator was working, where in the organisation he should be placed and what he adds to the construction process. Studies have been conducted on several types of building projects, varying organisations and geographically spread projects. The need for the subcontract coordinator is clearly stated among all types of participants. The function adds a more holistic outlook in scheduling, communication, troubleshooting and performance testing before project completion. The aim of this study is to provide a guideline for the coordinator's work. The results can be used to achieve a smoother construction phase with a successful project close-out.

  • Gene discovery in the wood-forming tissues of poplar : Analysis of 5,692 expressed sequence tags
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 95:22, s. 13330-13335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A rapidly growing area of genome research is the generation of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) in which large numbers of randomly selected cDNA clones are partially sequenced. The collection of ESTs reflects the level and complexity of gene expression in the sampled tissue, To date, the majority of plant ESTs are from nonwoody plants such as Arabidopsis, Brassica, maize, and rice. Here, we present a large-scale production of ESTs from the wood-forming tissues of two poplars, Populus tremula L, x tremuloides Michx, and Populus trichocarpa 'Trichobel.' The 5,692 ESTs analyzed represented a total of 3,719 unique transcripts for the two cDNA libraries, Putative functions could be assigned to 2,245 of these transcripts that corresponded to 820 protein functions. Of specific interest to forest biotechnology are the 4% of ESTs involved in various processes of cell wall formation, such as lignin and cellulose synthesis, 5% similar to developmental regulators and members of known signal transduction pathways, and 2% involved in hormone biosynthesis. An additional 12% of the ESTs show ed no significant similarity to any other DNA or protein sequences in existing databases. The absence of these sequences from public databases may indicate a specific role for these proteins in wood formation. The cDNA libraries and the accompanying database are valuable resources for forest research directed toward understanding the genetic control of wood formation and future endeavors to modify wood and fiber properties for industrial use.

  • The effects of desflurane on cardiac function as measured by conductance volumetry in swine
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Anesthesia and Analgesia. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 0003-2999 .- 1526-7598. ; 87:3, s. 522-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the investigation was to assess the effects of desflurane (DES) on left ventricular heart function during basal barbiturate anesthesia in a closed-pericardium, closed-chest acute swine model. The study was performed in 11 normoventilated adult pigs. Hemodynamic measurements were obtained using arterial, central venous, and pulmonary artery catheters, as well as a conductance volumetry and tip manometry catheter placed in the left ventricle. Hemodynamic measurements were recorded during basal pentobarbital anesthesia and with the addition of 1%, 2%, 4%, and 6% DES. DES dose-dependently decreased mean arterial pressure, systemic vascular resistance, left ventricular end-systolic pressure, dP/dtMAX and dP/dtMIN. At doses >1%, decreases in CO, stroke volume, ejection fraction, end-systolic elastance, preload recruitable stroke work, preload adjusted maximal power, and peak filling rate were observed. Heart rate decreased at 4% and 6% DES. Isovolumetric relaxation time increased only at 6% DES. We conclude that smaller doses of DES have a significant cardiodepressive effect in the setting of barbiturate infusion, as measured by conductance volumetry. IMPLICATIONS: Desflurane, in very small doses, depressed cardiac function during pentobarbital anesthesia with ketamine and benzodiazepine premedication in swine, as assessed by conductance volumetry and left ventricular pressure and volume relationship analysis. These results suggest that desflurane, in combination with certain anesthetics, can be cardiodepressive even in very small doses.

  • Predictive action in infancy : tracking and reaching for moving objects
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Cognition. - : Elsevier. - 0010-0277 .- 1873-7838. ; 67:3, s. 255-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Because action plans must anticipate the states of the world which will be obtained when the actions take place, effective actions depend on predictions. The present experiments begin to explore the principles underlying early-developing predictions of object motion, by focusing on 6-month-old infants' head tracking and reaching for moving objects. Infants were presented with an object that moved into reaching space on four trajectories: two linear trajectories that intersected at the center of a display and two trajectories containing a sudden turn at the point of intersection. In two studies, infants' tracking and reaching provided evidence for an extrapolation of the object motion on linear paths, in accord with the principle of inertia. This tendency was remarkably resistant to counter-evidence, for it was observed even after repeated presentations of an object that violated the principle of inertia by spontaneously stopping and then moving in a new direction. In contrast to the present findings, infants fail to extrapolate linear object motion in preferential looking experiments, suggesting that early-developing knowledge of object motion, like mature knowledge, is embedded in multiple systems of representation.

  • Multivariate process and quality monitoring applied to an electrolysis process. : Part I - Process supervision with multivariate control charts
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems. - 0169-7439. ; 42, s. 221-231
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multivariate statistical process control MSPC.is applied to an electrolysis process. The process produces extremely pure copper, and to monitor its quality the levels of eight metal impurities were recorded twice a day. These quality data are analysed adopting an 1. ‘intuitive’ univariate approach, and 2. with multivariate techniques. It is demonstrated that the univariate analysis gives confusing results with regards to outlier detection, while the multivariate approach identifies two types of outliers. Moreover, it is shown how the results from the multivariate principal component analysis PCA.method can be displayed graphically in multivariate control charts. Multivariate Shewhart, cumulative sum CUSUM.and exponentially weighted moving average EWMA.control charts are used and compared. Also, an informationally powerful control chart, the simultaneous scores monitoring and residual tracking SMART.chart, is introduced and used.
