  • Chemistries of Love. Impotence, erectile dysfunction and Viagra in Läkartidningen
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: NORMA. - Oslo : Universitetsforlaget AS. - 1890-2138 .- 1890-2146. ; 3:1, s. 31-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the discourse surrounding impotence, erectile dysfunction and Viagra in the Swedish medical journal Läkartidningen. It draws on articles published from 1990 to 2006, the eight years prior to and after Viagra’s 1998 introduction. Close reading of the articles has shown changes over this time period in how the impotent patient is defined. It has also revealed a transition in the discourse from the term impotence to erectile dysfunction. In these articles the role of the (female) partner in finding a solution to impotence and the social aspects of impotence also change dramatically once Viagra is available. Results from this study are contextualized against similar research that has examined the medical discourse around erectile dysfunction in the international arena.

  • Malaysia's View on the European Union's External Policies on Development And Gender Equality
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Presented at Gender Studies Programme, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, 17 September 2013.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The European Union (EU) has made it an explicit objective to "foster" development and gender equality in countries around the world through its external policies. The EU as a so-called "normative power" has been extensively covered in academic literature. However, scant attention has been devoted to the EU's attempts to promote gender equality - and even less attention devoted towards understanding how this is perceived by other countries around the globe. This project therefore draws attention towards how Malaysian policy makers and civil society actors percieve the EU as a "normative power" - and how they perceive and respond the EU's attempts to "foster gender-equality" in Malaysia.

  • A Cry for Care But not Justice : Embodied Vulnerabilities and the Moral Economy of Child Welfare
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 35:2, s. 231-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the pivotal role of the body for political recognition and rights claims in child welfare "moral" interventions. I examine how the bodily figures in child welfare assessments, linking these manifestations to the concept of the moral economy of care. A sample of assessment reports from a Swedish municipality, all addressing violations of children's bodies or integrity, are used as empirical material. I show how the psychosomatically suffering child is being best "heard" as vulnerable. I also argue that such a moral economy of care silences children's accounts of gendered and racial injustices. Furthermore, racialized moral divides are indicated when assessments of different child bodies are considered. A concluding remark points to need for a child welfare moral economy of social justice that responds to structural intersecting injustices in childhoods, including to those of a racialized child welfare and its individualized and symptom-oriented services.

  • Perceptions of participation and the role of gender for the engagement in solar energy communities in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Energy, Sustainability and Society. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2192-0567. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Energy communities are emphasized by the EU as important for developing sustainable energy systems that include and engage many people. While many renewables are highly compatible with a more decentralized energy system, research indicates that participation in 'desirable' energy activities and energy decision-making is influenced by social and economic factors, including gender, economic status and home ownership. The overall aim of this article is to contribute to this line of inquiry by exploring how and under which conditions energy communities allow for broader participation in the energy system. This article examines how gender, as a more specific condition, influences the extent to which parties can or cannot engage with collective solar ownership models by means of a qualitative study of 11 solar energy communities and one housing association in Sweden. Results: The study revealed that despite the relative potential for inclusion that they hold, energy communities can raise justice concerns in terms of inequities concerning access, capacity, and opportunity to engage in decision-making.Conclusions: While solely focusing on gender offers a limited view of the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in renewable energy projects, it is our position that integrating it into the analysis will provide insights into possible measures to remedy limitations and accelerate the renewable energy transition.

  • Initiators, controllers, and influencers: Enacting patient advocacy roles in cervical cancer screening policy practices
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Healthcare Activism: Markets, Morals, and the Collective Good (ed. Geiger, S.). - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780198865223 ; , s. 140-164
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter looks at how patient advocates have intervened in cervical cancer policies to promote and enact the HPV test as the new “right tool for the job” in cervical cancer screening. By drawing upon an ethnography of a Swedish patients’ group, it provides a case study of patient advocates as key actors in the current fabrics and monitoring of healthcare policies. Focused on the interplay between “uninvited participation” and “evidence-based activism,” the chapter discusses how patient advocacy roles—“initiators,” “controllers,” and “influencers”—are enacted and sparked through policy-related patient activism. The author pays particular attention to how patient advocates translate “credentialized knowledge,” such as clinical guidelines, journal articles, and statistics, into evidence in support of policy change. The chapter develops the notion of “evidential objects,” used for analyzing the role of such material and textual objects in patient advocates’ mobilization of evidence.

  • “What Do Eva and Anna Have to Do with Cervical Cancer?” Constructing Adolescent Girl Subjectivities in Swedish Gardasil Advertisements
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Girlhood Studies. - : Berghahn Books. - 1938-8209 .- 1938-8322. ; 6:2, s. 83-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article investigates direct-to-consumer advertising in Sweden for Gardasil, the HPV vaccine, as a contemporary gendered technology of the adolescent girl body. It explores how, by constructing girls as ideal users of the vaccine, advertising campaigns encourage adolescent girls to vaccinate themselves. Using a feminist visual discourse analysis, the article examines how different girl subjectivities are constructed through advertising, and presented as fit for Gardasil use and con- sumption. It highlights how, along with their parents, adolescent girls in Sweden are encouraged to assume responsibility for managing the risks of cervical cancer in order to help secure their future health, sexuality and normality. It argues that the Gardasil campaign, in being addressed to individual members of the popula- tion, serves to articulate global and national discourses of girlhood, sexuality, (sex- ual) health responsibility, risk management and consumption.

  • Trust, identity and beer : institutional arrangements for agricultural labour in Isunga village in Kiryandongo district, midwestern Uganda
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores the role and influence of institutions on agricultural labour transactions in Isunga village in Kiryandongo District, Midwestern Uganda. It primarily focuses on how farmers structure, maintain and enforce their labour relationships during crop farming. The study is based on semi-structured interviews of twenty households and unstructured interviews with representatives of farmers associations. These interviews show that other than household labour, the other common labour arrangements in the village include farm work sharing, labour exchanges and casual wage labour. Farm work sharing and labour exchanges involve farmers temporarily pooling their labour into work groups to complete tasks such as planting, weeding or harvesting crops on members' farms in succession. This is done under strict rules and rewarded with 'good' beer and food. Against this background, the study asks what institutions really are, why they matter and what we can learn about them. Literature suggests that institutions influence labour transactions by their effects on transaction costs and the protection of contractual rights. However, literature does not suggest which institutions are best for agricultural labour transactions. Taking institutions to be the 'rules of the game', with farmers as 'players' who strategically use these rules to their advantage, the study focused on the interaction between institutions and farmers. The major findings of the study are: (a) farmers' choices of institutions are influenced by the characteristics of transactions, the costs of using institutions for handling labour dealings, the fairness and predictability of the outcome of contract enforcement mechanisms, and socio-cultural factors such as kin/ethnic status, morality and affection, (b) formal institutions in Isunga are either weak, ineffective or absent. So, farmers rely heavily on institutions embedded in social norms and networks to structure their transactional relationships, to ensure the performance of the respective parties, and to settle disputes if they arise. The study concludes that agricultural labour transactions in Isunga involve judgements of personal characteristics and social roles expressed as reputation and trustworthiness.

  • Posthumanistiska nyckelstexter
  • 2012. - 1

  • ‘Sexual Orientation’ in Swedish Preschool Policy—What Is the Problem?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Genealogy. - : MDPI AG. - 1557-3796 .- 2313-5778. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present article focuses on how ‘sexual orientation’ is represented and produced in a Swedish preschool policy document regarding discrimination and equal treatment. ‘Poststuctural policy analysis’ is employed, in line with Foucault) and Bacchi. The results show that ‘sexual orientation’ is represented as a matter for families, but for parents rather than children. In the plans for equal treatment, visualizing different families stands out as the goal of working preventively against discrimination based on ‘sexual orientation’ in preschool, and the active measures planned for are reading books and spontaneous conversations. The article argues that the discrimination perspective represented in the documents, together with discourses on childhood innocence, establish certain conditions for how ‘sexual orientation’ is produced in preschool
