  • A preliminary analysis of the groundwater recharge to the Karoo formations, mid-Zambezi basin, Zimbabwe
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Physics and Chemistry of the Earth. - 1474-7065. ; 27:11-22, s. 765-772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multi-disciplinary study is being carried out on recharge to the Karoo sandstone aquifer in the western part of Zimbabwe, where recharge is controlled by the presence of a thick, confining basalt layer. The aquifer is geographically extensive, and has been identified throughout the southern part of the mid-Zambezi basin (Fig. 1). The potential for groundwater abstraction seems to be huge. The key issues in this part of the study are the extent of the recharge area and the recharge rates. The direct recharge area has previously been considered to be the area of outcrop of Karoo Forest sandstone, before it dips below an impervious basalt cover. However,, resistivity profiling shows that the basalt at the basin margin is weathered and fractured, and probably permeable, while the basalt deeper into the basin is fresh, solid and impermeable. Field and laboratory analysis of 22 groundwater samples support this extension of the recharge area to include a large area below the fractured basalt. CO2 gas pressures, calculated with the code PHREEQC using field measurements of pH and alkalinity, show that below the fractured basalt the groundwater is an open system in contact with atmospheric CO2. The C-14 and nitrate concentrations in this groundwater also indicate that recent infiltration takes place. The chloride contents of the rainfall and the groundwater in the recharge area have been measured to calculate direct recharge from rainfall. These data indicate that the direct recharge is in the range of 10-130 mm/yr, with an average value of 25 mm/yr. Preliminary results of recharge estimate using Cl-36 data suggests lower direct infiltration rates, but further studies are needed. The combination of hydro-chemical, isotopic and geophysical investigations show that the recharge area extends well beyond the sandstone outcrop area, northwards beneath the basalt some 20 km beyond the basalt margin.

  • Speech-Generating Devices Used at Home by Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders : A Preliminary Assessment
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Focus on Autism and other developmental disabilities. - : Sage Publications, Inc.. - 1088-3576 .- 1538-4829. ; 24:2, s. 104-114
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three children diagnosed within the autism spectrum between the ages of 5 and 7 years at different stages of communication development were supplied with speech-generating devices (SGDs) in their homes. The parents were taught to introduce the SGDs into home routines and the effects were evaluated naturalistically. Videotapes recorded by the parents before and during SGD use were coded with respect to communication effectiveness, mode, role in turn taking, and engagement in activity. Findings varied among the children and activities, but an increased level of communication effectiveness was seen during SGD use for all children. Variations of outcome among the three children and factors of importance for effective SGD use in the homes of children with autism spectrum disorders are discussed.

  • Artificial intelligence and the medical physics profession-A Swedish perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Physica Medica-European Journal of Medical Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1120-1797 .- 1724-191X. ; 88, s. 218-225
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is a continuous and dynamic discussion on artificial intelligence (AI) in present-day society. AI is expected to impact on healthcare processes and could contribute to a more sustainable use of resources allocated to healthcare in the future. The aim for this work was to establish a foundation for a Swedish perspective on the potential effect of AI on the medical physics profession. Materials and methods: We designed a survey to gauge viewpoints regarding AI in the Swedish medical physics community. Based on the survey results and present-day situation in Sweden, a SWOT analysis was performed on the implications of AI for the medical physics profession. Results: Out of 411 survey recipients, 163 responded (40%). The Swedish medical physicists with a professional license believed (90%) that AI would change the practice of medical physics but did not foresee (81%) that AI would pose a risk to their practice and career. The respondents were largely positive to the inclusion of AI in educational programmes. According to self-assessment, the respondents' knowledge of and workplace preparedness for AI was generally low. Conclusions: From the survey and SWOT analysis we conclude that AI will change the medical physics profession and that there are opportunities for the profession associated with the adoption of AI in healthcare. To overcome the weakness of limited AI knowledge, potentially threatening the role of medical physicists, and build upon the strong position in Swedish healthcare, medical physics education and training should include learning objectives on AI.

  • The tissue-specific effects of different 17 beta-estradiol doses reveal the key sensitizing role of AF1 domain in ER alpha activity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0303-7207. ; 505
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 17 beta-Estradiol (E2) action can be mediated by the full-length estrogen receptor alpha (ER alpha 66), and also by the AF1 domain-deficient ER alpha (ER alpha 46) isoform, but their respective sensitivity to E2 is essentially unknown. We first performed a dose response study using subcutaneous home-made pellets mimicking either metestrus, proestrus or a pharmacological doses of E2, which resulted in plasma concentrations around 3, 30 and 600 pM, respectively. Analysis of the uterus, vagina and bone after chronic exposure to E2 demonstrated dose-dependent effects, with a maximal response reached at the proestrus-dose in wild type mice expressing mainly ER alpha 66. In contrast, in transgenic mice harbouring only an ER alpha deleted in AF1, these effects of E2 were either strongly shifted rightward (10-100-fold) and/or attenuated, depending on the tissue studied. Finally, experiments in different cell lines transfected with ER alpha 66 or ER alpha 46 also delineated varying profiles of ER alpha AF1 sensitivity to E2. Altogether, this work emphasizes the importance of dose in the tissue-specific actions of E2 and demonstrates the key sensitizing role of AF1 in ER alpha activity.
