• Building Networks for Delivering Integrated Product-Service Offerings (IPSOs)
• 2010
• Ingår i: Industrial product-service systems -IPS². - Linköping : CIRP. - 9789173933810 - 9173933813
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• The paper describes the effect of forming business networks and collaborations for the purpose of developing an Integrated Product-Service Offering (IPSO) using the Product/Service Systems (PSS). The research method is an in-depth case study of a joint venture formed by four companies developing a new technology for chemical extraction from water sludge waste within the pulp and paper industry.Combining literature from PSS, network theories and collaborative product development, this paper puts forward the benefits for SMEs to collaborate in business networks and produce IPSOs when introducing a new technology in an emerging market. The case study shows that working towards the new market would not have been possible if each party acted individually or maintained their traditional buyer-supplieroperator roles, and that IPSOs can reduce the business risk.

• A theoretical study of possible point defects incorporated into alpha-alumina deposited by chemical vapor deposition
• 2013
• Ingår i: Theoretical Chemistry accounts. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-881X .- 1432-2234. ; 133:2, s. 1433-
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The energetics and electronic structure of carbon, chlorine, hydrogen, and sulfur in alpha-Al2O3 was investigated by first principles and thermodynamical calculations. These species are present in the gas phase during the synthesis of alpha-Al2O3 by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) but little is known of their solubility in this compound. The heat of formation from standard reference states of the elements varying the chemical potential of each element was calculated. An attempt to model the actual conditions in the CVD process was made, using the species and solid compounds present in a common CVD process as reference states. Our calculations suggest that sulfur from the catalyzing agent H2S will not solve in alpha-Al2O3 during deposition by CVD. It is found that the neutral chlorine and hydrogen interstitial defects display the lowest heat of formation, 281 and 280 kJ/mol, respectively, at the modeled CVD conditions. This energy is too high in order for neutral defects to form during CVD of alpha-Al2O3 at any significant amounts. The charged defects and their compensation were studied. Carbon substituting oxygen is found to be energetically favored under the modeled CVD conditions, considering carbon dioxide as competing species to solid solubility in alpha-Al2O3 at an energy of -128 kJ/mol. However, care needs to be taken when choosing the possible competing carbon-containing phases. Compensation of carbon substituting for oxygen by oxygen vacancies takes place at 110 kJ/mol from standard reference states, graphite, fcc-Al and O-2. The carbon solubility in Al2O3 is difficult to measure with standard analysis techniques such as X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, but several stable compounds in the Al-C-O are available in the literature.

• Picture-elicited written narratives, process and product, in 18 children with cochlear implants
• 2010
• Ingår i: Communication Disorders Quarterly. - Austin, TX : PRO-ED. - 1525-7401 .- 1538-4837. ; 31:4, s. 195-212
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The purpose of the study was to explore the narrative writing of 18 children, ages 11 to 19, with severe and profound hearing impairment who had cochlear implants (CI), compared with the performance of hearing children. Nine of the 18 children had prelingual deafness and 9 children had postlingual deafness. The hearing impairment was progressive in 11 children. The participants thus formed a heterogeneous group, which was split in two ways: according to age at testing and age at implantation. The narratives were collected by means of keystroke logging. The difference between the children with CI and the hearing children was most prominent for two measures: the percentage of pause time (in the group of children older than 13 years) and lexical density. Furthermore, the children implanted after 5 years of age performed more like the hearing children. This group consisted of children with postlingual deafness and also of children who were deafened progressively. Our interpretation is that these children benefited from the early linguistic input. Taking the whole group of participants into consideration, the results reflect linguistic and cognitive processing limitations in complex linguistic tasks like narration for the children with CI in comparison with their hearing peers.

• Recognition of knowledge and skills at work : in whose interests?
• 2012
• Ingår i: Journal of Workplace Learning. - : Emerald. - 1366-5626 .- 1758-7859. ; 24:2, s. 73-84
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Purpose – Work-place learning takes place in many settings and in different ways, resulting in knowledge and skills of different kinds. The recognition process in the work place is however often implicit and seldom discussed in terms of recognition of prior learning (RPL). The aim of this paper is to give examples of how the knowledge/skills of employees get recognition in the workplace and to discuss what the consequences of such recognition processes might be. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is based on a study in two companies and two municipalities, where 21 interviews were conducted with human resource managers, team leaders and union representatives. The research questions concerned the ways skills were recognised among employees and how the logics of these actions could be understood. Findings – The findings show that both companies and municipalities have their own ways of assessing knowledge/skills, mostly out of a production logic of what is needed at the workplace. However, certain skills are also made “unvisualised” for the employee. This employer-controlled recognition logic is important to understand when RPL models are brought to the work place in order to obtain win-win situations for both employers and employees. Practical implications – It seems important to identify an already existing system for assessment of knowledge/skills at the workplace when bringing RPL processes to the workplace. Originality/value – The approach to understand assessment processes in these companies and municipalities from an RPL perspective has not been widely covered before.

• Alive and kicking–but will Quality Management be around tomorrow? A Swedish academia perspective
• 2012
• Ingår i: Quality Innovation Prosperity. - : Technical University of Kosice, Faculty of Materials, Metallurgy and Recycling. - 1335-1745 .- 1338-984X. ; 16:2, s. 1-18
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The purpose of this article is to describe how Quality Management (QM) is perceived today by scholars at three Swedish universities, and into what QM is expected to develop into in twenty years. Data were collected through structured workshops using affinity diagrams with scholars teaching and performing research in the QM field. The results show that QM currently is perceived as consisting of a set of core of principles, methods and tools. The future outlook includes three possible development directions for QM are seen: [1] searching for a “discipline X” where QM can contribute while keeping its toolbox, [2] focus on a core based on the traditional quality technology toolbox with methods and tools, and [3] a risk that QM, as it is today, may seize to exist and be diffused into other disciplines.

• Commentary on Theories of mathematics education: Is plurality a problem?
• 2010
• Ingår i: Theories of Mathematics Education: Seeking New Frontiers . - New York : Springer. - 9783642007415 - 9783642007422 ; , s. 111-120
• Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• The chapter by Steve Lerman provides a powerful analysis that helps to make sense of the changing nature of the discourse in mathematics education as a research domain, of its knowledge structure and of the positions of researchers in relation to intellectual traditions ‘outside’ the field as well as in relation to changing pedagogic modes. The reading invited us to expand on the conceptualisation of knowledge structures and discourses in mathematics education as a research domain.

• Interpreting students' reasoning through the lens of two different languages of description : integration or juxtaposition?
• 2010
• Ingår i: Proceedings of the Sixth Congress of the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education. January 28th - February 1st 2009, Lyon (France). - Lyon : INSTITUT NATIONAL DE RECHERCHE PÉDAGOGIQUE. - 9782734211907 ; , s. 1555-1564
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• This contribution exemplifies the interpretation of a common set of data by using two languages of description originating from different theoretical perspectives. One ac- count uses categories from a psychological and the other from a sociological per- spective. The interpretations result in different explanations for the students’ strug- gles with sense making. However, the results cannot be integrated into a combined insight, but only be juxtaposed.

• Reproduction and distribution of mathematical knowledge in higher education: constructing insiders and outsiders
• 2010
• Ingår i: Mathematics Education and Society. - Berlin : Freie Universotät Berlin. ; , s. 130-140, s. 150-160
• Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
• The design and conduct of calculus courses has been and is an object of curriculardebates and reforms. By the reconstruction of the establishment of the mathematicalsub-area now called ‘calculus’ and its fundamental theorem as a piece ofinstitutionalized mathematical knowledge for the purpose of its reproduction, wereconsider the notion of knowledge recontextualization within the field of knowledgeproduction by showing that standardization of knowledge evolves in a dynamicrelationship with its production. Interviews with mathematicians suggest that they, asteachers, create different recontextualization principles. In undergraduate teachingcalculus they suggest to include the criteria of the field of knowledge production (e.g.proof) for the future ‘insiders’, while for those who will not pursue a career withinthis field, the ‘outsiders’, the criteria change towards computational efficiency.

• Value-driven Purchasing of Kitchen Cabinets in Industrialized Housing
• 2011
• Ingår i: Journal of Financial Management of Property and Construction. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1366-4387 .- 1363-2175. ; 16:1, s. 73-83
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• Purpose - This article hypothesises that value-driven purchasing of customized kitchen cabinets is more profitable than market-driven purchasing in industrialized housing construction. The hypothesis is examined through a case study of kitchen carpentry at one of Sweden’s largest producers of industrialized prefabricated multi-storey housing. By comparing characteristics of market-driven vs. value-driven purchasing, this article aims to further clarify the benefits and drawbacks of these two strategies. Design/methodology/approach - A theoretical framework is proposed by comparing characteristics of market-driven vs. value-driven purchasing that clarifies the benefits and drawbacks of these two strategies. An explorative case study of kitchen carpentry at a house manufacturer illustrates purchasing of kitchen cabinets in the industrialized housing industry in relation to the proposed framework. Findings – According to the case study, from a value perspective, a long-term relationship with a dedicated local, smaller supplier is a preferable choice over a short-term bulk supplier, even if the short-term supplier has (much) lower prices. Research limitations/implications – This is a single-case study that should be verified by further empirical work of a test-delivery from the local sub-system manufacturer. Such a study would provide more insights into this area of work and make it possible to thoroughly evaluate potential risks. The indicative results in this paper can be made conclusive through quantification of the proposed Lean purchasing characteristics. Originality/value – A comparison of value-driven and market-driven purchasing is carried out in theory and applied to a real case study that brings new perspectives to purchasing. In this way, the article proposes alternative purchasing strategies to the construction industry.

• Value-driven vs Market-driven Purchasing of Kitchen Cabinets
• 2010
• Ingår i: Conference Proceeding 18th annual conference of the International Group for Lean Construction. - Haifa : Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. ; , s. 202-211
• Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• In economic and management literature, the relationship between supplier and buyer can be more or less intimate. It can vary from market-driven with a constant change of suppliers to a value-driven relationship with one sole supplier. Purchasing strategies of construction companies have often been described as short-sighted, where price is the most considered aspect. Recent lean management literature promote value-driven purchasing, since it provides benefits such as just-in-time delivery, zero defects and customized products through close technical collaboration. This article hypothesises that value-driven purchasing of customized kitchen cabinets is more profitable than market-driven purchasing in industrialized housing construction. At the case company, kitchens are ordered cabinet-by-cabinet and then installed inside the factory. The company is considering the possibility of a long-term relationship with a smaller local supplier that can deliver a new kind of innovative kitchen cabinet solution that is prefabricated. If the local supplier can meet the expectations of just-in-time delivery, zero defects and a product “tailor-made” for the housing company, there is much to gain.
