  • Analysis of time-resolved PIV measurements of a confined co-flowing jet using POD and Koopman modes
  • 2011
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Modal analysis by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) of experimental data from a fully turbulent flow is presented. The flow case is a turbulent confined jet with co-flow, with Reynolds number based on the jet thickness of Re=10700. Experiments are performed with time-resolved Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The jet is created in a square channel with the confinement ratio is 1:5. Statistics of the flow are presented in terms of mean and fluctuating fields. Analysis of spatial spectra and temporal spectra reveal the presence of dominant wavelengths and frequenciesembedded in broad-band turbulent spectrum. Frequencies in the shearlayer migrate from St ≈ 1 near the jet inlet to St < 0.1 at 18 jet thickness downstream. This flow case provides an interesting and challenging benchmark for testing POD and DMD and discussing their efficacy in describing a fully turbulent case. At first, issues related to convergence and physical interpretation of the modes are discussed, then the results are analyzed and compared. POD analysis reveals the most energetic spatial structures that are related to the flapping of the jet; a low frequency peak (St = 0.02) is found when the associated temporalmode is analyzed. Higher order modes revealed the presence of fasteroscillating shear flow modes combined to a recirculation zone near the inner jet. The flapping of the inner jet is sustained by this region. A good agreement is found between DMD and POD; however, DMD is able to rank the modes by frequencies, isolating structures associated to harmonics of the flow.

  • Feedback control and modal structures in transitional shear flows
  • 2011
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    •   Two types of shear flows are investigated in this thesis; numerical simulations are performed for the analysis and control of the perturbation arising in a boundary layer over a flat plate, whereas PIV measurements are analysed for the investigation of a confined turbulent jet. Modal structures of the flows are identified: the aim is to understand the flow phenomena and to identify reduced-order models for the feedback control design. The attenuation of three-dimensional wavepackets of streaks and Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves in the boundary layer is obtained using feedback control based on arrays of spatially localized sensors and actuators distributed near the rigid wall. In order to tackle the difficulties arising due to the dimension of the discretized Navier-Stokes operator, a reduced-order model is identified, preserving the dynamics between the inputs and the outputs; to this end, approximate balanced truncation is used. Thus, control theory tools can be easily handled using the low-order model. We demonstrate that the energy growth of both TS wavepackets and streak-packets is substantially and efficiently mitigated, using relatively few sensors and actuators. The robustness of the controller is investigated by varying the number of actuators and ensors, the Reynolds number and the pressure gradient. The configuration can be possibly reproduced in experiments, due to the localization of sensing and actuation devices. A complete analysis of a confined turbulent jet is carried out using timeresolved PIV measurements. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) modes and Koopman modes are computed and analysed for understanding the main features of the flow. The frequencies related to the dominating mechanisms are identified; the most energetic structures show temporal periodicity.

  • Feedback control of three-dimensional optimal disturbances using reduced-order models
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Fluid Mechanics. - 0022-1120 .- 1469-7645. ; 677, s. 63-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The attenuation of three-dimensional wavepackets of streaks and Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) waves in a transitional boundary layer using feedback control is investigated numerically. Arrays of localized sensors and actuators (about 10-20) with compact spatial support are distributed near the rigid wall equidistantly along the spanwise direction and connected to a low-dimensional (r = 60) linear quadratic Gaussian controller. The control objective is to minimize the disturbance energy in a domain spanned by a number of proper orthogonal decomposition modes. The feedback controller is based on a reduced-order model of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations including the inputs and outputs, computed using a snapshot-based balanced truncation method. To account for the different temporal and spatial behaviour of the two main instabilities of boundary-layer flows, we design two controllers. We demonstrate that the two controllers reduce the energy growth of both TS wavepackets and streak packets substantially and efficiently, using relatively few sensors and actuators. The robustness of the controller is investigated by varying the number of actuators and sensors, the Reynolds number and the pressure gradient. This work constitutes the first experimentally feasible simulation-based control design using localized sensing and acting devices in conjunction with linear control theory in a three-dimensional setting.

  • Linear control of 3D disturbances on a flat-plate
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: SEVENTH IUTAM SYMPOSIUM ON LAMINAR-TURBULENT TRANSITION. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands. - 9789048137220 ; , s. 373-378
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using a number of localized sensors and actuators, a feedback controller is designed in order to reduce the growth of three-dimensional disturbances in the hotplate boundary layer. A reduced-order model of the input-output system (composed of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations including inputs and outputs) is computed by projection onto a number of balanced truncation modes. It is shown that a model with 50 deuces of freedom captures the input-output behavior of the high-dimensional (n similar to 10(7)) system. The controller is based on a classical LQG scheme with a row of three sensors in the spanwise direction connected to a row of three actuators further downstream. The controller minimizes the perturbation energy in a spatial region defined by a number of (objective) functions.

  • Post-glacial history and introgression in Abies (Pinaceae) species of the Russian Far East inferred from both nuclear and cytoplasmic markers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biogeography. - : Wiley. - 0305-0270 .- 1365-2699. ; 38:2, s. 326-340
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim The main aim of the present study is to infer the post-glacial history of Abies species from north-east Asia and to test the hypotheses that coastal Abies populations suffered less from climatic fluctuations during Pleistocene glacial periods than their more continental counterparts, and that Sakhalin was a major area of introgression. Location Natural ranges of the fir species Abies nephrolepis, Abies sachalinensis and Abies holophylla in the Russian Far East, and of Abies gracilis, which is endemic to the Kamchatka Peninsula. Methods Nineteen populations were sampled for allozyme analysis. Seventeen of these populations were also screened for variation at two paternally inherited chloroplast DNA microsatellite loci (cpSSR) and variation at one maternally inherited mitochondrial marker (nad4-3/4). Finally a subset of 11 populations was analysed with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Comparisons were made with already available Abies sibirica data. For all sets of markers, we estimated genetic diversity and differentiation using an analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA). Population clustering was assessed with a Bayesian approach implemented in structure v.2.3. Results Among the three major species, A. sibirica, A. nephrolepis and A. sachalinensis, A. sachalinensis demonstrated the highest cytoplasmic and nuclear diversity and the most continental species, A. sibirica, the lowest. Both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers revealed the presence of a transitional zone on Sakhalin Island between A. nephrolepis and A. sachalinensis of south Sakhalin. The structure analysis delivered very clear results confirming the admixed origin of A. sachalinensis, with a genetic contribution from A. nephrolepis. No variation in cytoplasmic markers was found in A. gracilis, suggesting the occurrence of a recent bottleneck. Main conclusions There is a clear reduction of genetic diversity in Abies species from the Pacific coast into the continent. The higher diversity in A. sachalinensis could have two causes: a larger effective population size in the islands due to relatively stable climatic conditions and consequently less pronounced demographic fluctuations in population size and/or hybridization with continental and Japanese populations. Sakhalin Island is a major transitional zone for conifer species. Finally, the fir from Kamchatka, A. gracilis, should be regarded as a separate species closely related to the A. nephrolepis-A. sachalinensis complex.

  • Carbon transport by the Lena River from its headwaters to the Arctic Ocean, with emphasis on fluvial input of terrestrial particulate organic carbon vs. carbon transport by coastal erosion
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Biogeosciences. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1726-4170 .- 1726-4189. ; 8:9, s. 2407-2426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Lena River integrates biogeochemical signals from its vast drainage basin, and the integrated signal reaches far out over the Arctic Ocean. Transformation of riverine organic carbon (OC) into mineral carbon, and mineral carbon into the organic form in the Lena River watershed, can be considered to be quasi-steady-state processes. An increase in Lena discharge exerts opposite effects on total organic (TOC) and total inorganic (TCO(2)) carbon: TOC concentration increases, while TCO(2) concentration decreases. Significant inter-annual variability in mean values of TCO(2), TOC, and their sum (total carbon, TC) has been found. This variability is determined by changes in land hydrology which cause differences in the Lena River discharge. There is a negative correlation in the Lena River between TC in September and its mean discharge in August; a time shift of about one month is required for water to travel from Yakutsk to the Laptev Sea. Total carbon entering the sea with the Lena discharge is estimated to be almost 10 Tg C yr(-1). The annual Lena River discharge of particulate organic carbon (POC) can be as high as 0.38 Tg (moderate to high estimate). If we instead accept Lisytsin's (1994) statement that 85-95% of total particulate matter (PM) (and POC) precipitates on the marginal filter, then only about 0.03-0.04 Tg of Lena River POC reaches the Laptev Sea. The Lena's POC export would then be two orders of magnitude less than the annual input of eroded terrestrial carbon onto the shelf of the Laptev and East Siberian seas, which is estimated to be about 4 Tg. Observations support the hypothesis of a dominant role for coastal erosion (Semiletov, 1999a, b) in East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS) sedimentation and the dynamics of the carbon/carbonate system. The Lena River is characterized by relatively high concentrations of the primary greenhouse gases, dissolved carbon dioxide (CO(2)) and methane (CH(4)). During all seasons the river is supersaturated in CO(2) compared to the atmosphere, by up to 1.5-2 fold in summer, and 4-5 fold in winter. This results in a significant CO(2) supersaturation in the adjacent coastal sea. Localized areas of dissolved CH(4) along the Lena River and in the Lena delta channels may reach 100 nM, but the CH(4) concentration decreases to 5-20nM towards the sea, which suggests that riverborne export of CH(4) plays but a minor role in determining the ESAS CH(4) budget in coastal waters. Instead, the seabed appears to be the source that provides most of the CH(4) to the Arctic Ocean.

  • Observed development of the vertical structure of the marine boundary layer during the LASIE experiment in the Ligurian Sea
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 28:1, s. 17-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the marine environment, complete datasets describing the surface layer and the vertical structure of the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL), through its entire depth, are less frequent than over land, due to the high cost of measuring campaigns. During the seven days of the Ligurian Air-Sea Interaction Experiment (LASIE), organized by the NATO Undersea Research Centre (NURC) in the Mediterranean Sea, extensive in situ and remote sensing measurements were collected from instruments placed on a spar buoy and a ship. Standard surface meteorological measurements were collected by meteorological sensors mounted on the buoy ODAS Italia1 located in the centre of the Gulf of Genoa. The evolution of the height (z(i)) of the MABL was monitored using radiosondes and a ceilometer on board of the N/O Urania. Here, we present the database and an uncommon case study of the evolution of the vertical structure of the MABL, observed by two independent measuring systems: the ceilometer and radiosondes. Following the changes of surface flow conditions, in a sequence of onshore - offshore - onshore wind direction shifting episodes, during the mid part of the campaign, the overall structure of the MABL changed. Warm and dry air from land advected over a colder sea, induced a stably stratified Internal Boundary Layer (IBL) and a consequent change in the structure of the vertical profiles of potential temperature and relative humidity.
