    • In the light of a brief review of the theories of power — in which the definitions of power are asked when, where and how is power executed? — the article defines power as the ability of an individual or a collective actor to cause, effect and prevent action in others and to achieve the desired results. The article then concentrates on a kind of power which is called acculturation. This appears in two forms: surface acculturation which rests on external coercion; and deep acculturation resting on internalized coercion. Surface acculturation is the attempt to create a weak-minded machine, a robot, out of the subordinate. But, since an individual cannot be a robot he has to play the role of a robot. This, in fact, defends the subordinates personality against the encroachment of power. When this defence of personality develops consciously, one can talk about a form of resistance which rests on fraudulent social interaction. In order to capture the acting that surface acculturation tends to bring about, the article develops the concept role absorption, referring to the total absorption of the individual in the role with the purpose of masking and defending the personality.

    • Tidigare studier av bedömning i historia och samhällskunskap i den svenska skolan har företrädelsevis handlat om vad lärare bedömer, eller vad elever presterar (Berg & Persson, 2020). I den här artikeln är syftet istället att undersöka hur olika förståelser av dessa båda skolämnens elev-emancipatoriska potential aktualiserar olika typer av ut­maningar och möjligheter i lärares bedömningsuppdrag. Datainsamlingen bygger på åtta timmeslånga intervjuer med lärare som undervisar på gymnasiet i ett mellansvenskt län.Diskussionen om vad som skapar förutsättningar för en ny generation att förstå och kanske förändra sin egen och andras situation framstår ofta som polemisk. Medan vissa betonat betydelsen av vilken (redan etablerad) kunskap som förmedlas (jfr Young, 2013), har andra framhållit värdet av att låta undervisningen utgå från den enskilde elevens eller samhällsgruppens unikt situerade intressen, frågor och behov (jfr t.ex. De Lissovoy, 2010; Tur Porres et al., 2014).I de åtta lärarsamtalen framträder denna avvägning mellan det på förhand givna och det situerade, emellertid i mindre grad som ett antingen/eller. I den lärarprofessionella bedömningspraktiken tycks avpassningen snarare ta dialektisk form i mötet mellan ämnesinnehåll och elev. Samme lärare kan både ge uttryck för anspråk som aktiverar utmaningar förknippade med förutsägbarhet, och rymma skildringar av en strävan att låta bedömningsprocessen bli så öppen som möjlig (jfr Biesta, 2009). Det sätt som eleven visar sig och träder fram i ämnet tycks sätta avtryck i, men är inte ensamt av­görande för, frågan om vad undervisningen ges för innehåll.

    • Between tradition and reform: Pedagogical essay topics at two Swedish teacher training seminars, 1915–1937.During the beginning of the twentieth century, a series of school reforms was carried out in Sweden. One concerned the education of elementary school teachers. In this article, we examine which knowledge and teaching ideals that was posed by some of those who had the task of putting this reform into practice. At the center are the nearly five hundred essay topics that were offered at the teacher training seminars in Lund (only male apprentices) and Falun (only female apprentices) 1914–1937. The results advocate that two rather different local cultures of knowledge were developed at the two seminars. While the essay topics that were offered in Lund mostly seems to promote a more traditional reproductive view on teaching, the ones proposed in Falun rather appears to encourage a much more reformistic understanding of schooling. Hence it is suggested that the latter might be understood as an aspiration to establish a more autonomous and independent women teacher identity.

    • Det sägs ibland att människor definieras av krig. Mina föräldrar definierades av det kalla kriget på samma sätt som mina mor- och farföräldrar hade definierats av det andra världskriget. Min generation, 80-talisterna, skulle komma att definieras av vad George W. Bush den 13:e oktober 2001 kom att kalla för ”det globala kriget mot terrorismen”. För många bedömare, även de mest initierade, var det till en början svårt att föreställa sig att världens högst utvecklade industriland kunde bli så kraftfullt attackerat som USA blev den 11:e september 2001 av al-Qaida, en terrorgrupp med bas i ett av världens minst utvecklade länder. När den populära politiska talkshowen Charlie Rose i USA sände live på kvällen den 11:e september 2001 vägrade flera av de medverkande, den tidens ledande säkerhetspolitiska analytiker, att tro att det enbart var en icke-statlig grupp som låg bakom 11 september-attackerna – så massiv var chocken initialt i USA (Charlie Rose 2001).

  • Micro- and nanostructured magnetic field sensor for space applications

    • Magnetometers are popular payloads on scientific space missions. Here, the design and fabrication process of a miniaturized magnetometer based on tunneling magnetoresistance is presented. The process is capable of making magnetic tunnel junctions in a wide size range, by employing both UV lithography and focused ion beam milling and deposition. Ga implantation in the ferromagnetic electrodes of the junction is studied in more detail. It was shown that Ga implantation may harm the magnetometer if the irradiation dose exceeds 1014 Ga+ cm-2.

  • Microplasma emission spectroscopy of carbon dioxide using the carbon monoxide Ångström system

    • The present paper describes a system and method for indirect emission spectroscopy of CO2 in the visible spectrum. This is achieved by using a microplasma spectrometer that first converts CO2 into CO and then measures emissions from the CO Ångström system (B1Σ + → A1Π) at 560 nm. The experiments were performed on gaseous samples of CO2, mixed in both N2 and air, to concentrations between 0.01% and 100%. In addition to the microplasma spectrometer, the process was monitored by mass spectrometry with a residual gas analyzer. The CO2 to CO conversion efficiency was found to be very high, reaching a maximum of 41% at close to 100% selectivity. Furthermore, the CO Ångström system was shown to facilitate excellent spectroscopic measurement of CO2 concentrations below 10%, with a linearity of R2 > 0.99 and an expected limit of detection in the parts-per-thousands range. The most promising aspect of the results was that the analysis was performed on extremely small total sample amounts where the gas flow through the systems was in the 0.1 µmole/s range. Hence, the present system has the prospect of filling a void in current sensor technology, where inexpensive and easy-to-use optical systems, such as nondispersive infrared sensors, cannot handle small sample amounts, while mass spectrometers, which can handle such samples, still are expensive, complex, and bulky.

    • This study investigates the prospects of using emissions from the discharge of a stripline split-ring resonator microplasma source to measure the C-13/C-12 isotope ratio in CO2. The plasma source was used in a measurement scheme called microplasma emission spectroscopy, in which the visible emission spectrum of the CO2 discharge was investigated using a Charge- Coupled Device (CCD) spectrometer. The study revealed that the major isotope dependencies of the spectrum originated from the Angstrom system (B-1 Sigma(+) -> A(1)Pi) of CO molecules that had been converted from CO2 in the discharge. Although at least four of the bands of the Angstrom system showed clear isotopic dependences, the (0-3) band at 561 nm was concluded to show the most prospects for spectrometric applications because of a combination of wide isotopic shift and low background. A theoretical model of this band was constructed and used in a partial least squares fitting algorithm, to quantify the abundance of C-12 and C-13 in the sample. This signal processing method was shown to be robust and linear over the whole dynamic range of C-13/C-12 ratios (1%-100%) but required a ten-fold improvement in precision and accuracy at naturally occurring C-13 levels (1.07%-1.12%) to be useful in most scientific applications. However, several promising ways of achieving such an improvement have been presented, and the results demonstrate the potential of creating a simple, cost-effective, and highly miniaturized system for isotope ratio measurements, which could offer great advantages to scientists in many different fields, from environmental science to planetary exploration.

    • Objective: Current methods for transcutaneous blood gas monitoring (TBM) – a common health monitoring method in neonatal care - comes with a suite of challenges like limited attachment opportunities, and risks of infections from burning and tearing of the skin, which limits its use. This study presents a novel system and method for rate-based transcutaneous CO2 measurements with a soft, unheated skin-interface that can address many of these problems. Additionally, a theoretical model for the gas transport from the blood to the system's sensor is derived. Methods: By simulating CO2 advection and diffusion through the cutaneous microvasculature and epidermis to the system's skin interface, the effect of a wide range of physiological properties on the measurement has been modeled. Following these simulations, a theoretical model for the relationship between the measured CO2 concentration and that in the blood was derived and compared to empirical data. Results: Applying the model on measured blood gas levels, even when the theory was based solely on the simulations, produced blood CO2 concentrations within ∼35% of empirical measurements from a state-of-the-art device. Further calibration of the framework, also using the empirical data, yielded an output with a Pearson correlation of 0.84 between the two methods. Conclusion: Compared to the state-of-the-art device the proposed system measured the partial CO2 pressure in the blood with an average deviation of 0.04 kPa and 1.97σ of ±1.1 kPa. However, the model indicated that this performance could be hampered by different skin properties. Significance: Given its soft and gentle skin interface and lack of heating, the proposed system could significantly decrease health risks like, burns, tears, and pain, currently associated with TBM on premature neonates.

  • Modelling and design of planar Hall effect bridge sensors for low-frequency applications

    • The applicability of miniaturized magnetic field sensors is being explored in several areas of magneticfield detection due to their integratability, low mass, and potentially low cost. In this respect, differentthin-film technologies, especially those employing magnetoresistance, show great potential, being compatible with batch micro- and nanofabrication techniques. For low-frequency magnetic field detection,sensors based on the planar Hall effect, especially planar Hall effect bridge (PHEB) sensors, show promising performance given their inherent low-field linearity, limited hysteresis and moderate noise figure. Inthis work, the applicability of such PHEB sensors to different areas is investigated. An analytical modelis constructed to estimate the performance of an arbitrary PHEB sensor geometry in terms of, e.g., sensitivity and detectivity. The model is valid for an ideal case, e.g., disregarding shape anisotropy effects, andalso incorporates some approximations. To validate the results, modelled data was compared to measurements on actual PHEBs and was found to predict the measured values within 13% for the investigatedgeometries. Subsequently, the model was used to establish a design process for optimizing a PHEB to aparticular set of requirements on the bandwidth, detectivity, compliance voltage and amplified signalto-noise ratio. By applying this design process, the size, sensitivity, resistance, bias current and powerconsumption of the PHEB can be estimated. The model indicates that PHEBs can be applicable to severaldifferent areas within science including satellite attitude determination and magnetic bead detection inlab-on-a-chip applications, where detectivities down towards 1 nT Hz−0.5at 1 Hz are required, andmaybeeven magnetic field measurements in scientific space missions and archaeological surveying, where thedetectivity has to be less than 100 pT Hz−0.5at 1 Hz.
