  • Personality and defenses : a cross-cultural study of psychiatric patients and healthy individuals in Nicaragua and Sweden.
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: Psychological Reports. - 0033-2941 .- 1558-691X. ; 83:3 Pt 2, s. 1331-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examined cross-cultural variability in personality and defenses among Nicaraguan and Swedish healthy individuals, patients with borderline personality disorder and schizophrenic disorders by means of the projective perceptual Defense Mechanism Test. The over-all aim was to test the hypothesis proposed by Anthony Marsella of 'severity related cross-cultural variability' suggesting that differences in symptom profile or personality patterns between cultures are most pronounced among healthy individuals and less so among individuals with severe mental disorders as they are perceived as more universal and less culturally determined. The over-all results showed that cross-cultural differences were in accordance with the proposed hypothesis. In addition, there were significant intracultural differences between the different diagnostic groups in both countries. The conclusion is that the Defense Mechanism Test and Partial Least Squares analysis seem to be powerful methods for personality assessment and potentially for cross-cultural research, and culture-specific norms in the Defense Mechanism Test must be employed.

  • From Runners-Up to Winners : Explaining the Electoral Victories of the Left in Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Peru
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This essay presents a comparison “repeat candidacies”, i.e., failed presidential contenders who return to win subsequent elections in five Latin American countries. By comparing their failed electoral bids with successful ones, I attempt to gauge the relative influence of factors that are external to the candidates in question and the ones over which they have control, such as policy proposals and alliances. The analysis indicates the importance of factors that are political in nature for success. Whereas social and economic variables appear to have scant explanatory value, an aspect such as the composition of the opposition seems much more influential. In particular, moderation in proposals and presentation appears as an important factor distinguishing successful campaigns from failed ones. In order to show the effects of such moderation, I calculate what I call “proportionality scores” that show how broadly a candidate appeals across the political spectrum. The fact that successful candidates have managed to simultaneously appeal to different ideological, ethnic and socio-economic groups gives a somewhat different perspective on Latin America’s supposed “left turn”, and indicates the need to pay more attention to political agency in explanations for political developments on the continent.

  • "25 dollar rebel": Identity politics, Legislation and Class in stories from Lesbian Activists in Nicaragua
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Dissident Citizenship: Queer Postcolonial Belonging.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One interviewee says she has always been a marimacha, another view herself as a lesbian identified with gay men and a third talk about the importance of being a woman and not a cochóna. At manifestations they all have t-shirts with a person screaming “Soy Rebelde, Soy lesbiana, Soy mujer, Soy Ciudadana!!!” and “Exijo mis Derechos!”. The common political symbols and rhetoric are a huge part of the campaigns for sexual diversity, towards being able to exist as a sexual minority and a Nicaraguan citizen. To get finance for the work towards “sexual freedom”, identity politics is absolutely necessary. Fighting for acknowledge GLBT rights (in the ‘west’), are legitimate reasons for funding through international non-governmental organizations. Through this perspective identity politics, rather than queer theory, seem to be part of a colonial heritage. Hence categories such as lesbian, gay and trans- are presented as liberating space in the work for “a sexuality free from prejudice” and I find it interesting to ask how, why and when the identity-labels are being used. One important goal for the lesbian activists in Nicaragua is still visibility – to be recognized and accepted as lesbian women. In 1992 a law against same-sex, Article 204, was initiated and upheld by the Nicaraguan Supreme Court in 1994. The main target of article 204 was not women; but the initiative was part of an increased security for (heterosexual) women. Fortunately the article was abolished 2008, when a new Penal Code was drafted. Hence as in so many places and for such a long time the sexuality of women has been ignored in the legislation. On top of this, lesbian women generally have a hard time getting an independent life in Nicaragua. Women in the popular classes are often expected to take care of a common household and are economically dependent on male relatives. In the following paper I will discuss strategies to survive as a lesbian and lesbianism as part of survival as a queer citizen in Nicaragua.

  • Assessing the Multiple Dimensions of Poverty : Data Mining Approaches to the 2004-14 Health and Demographic Surveillance System in Cuatro Santos, Nicaragua
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Public Health. - : FRONTIERS MEDIA SA. - 2296-2565. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We identified clusters of multiple dimensions of poverty according to the capability approach theory by applying data mining approaches to the Cuatro Santos Health and Demographic Surveillance database, Nicaragua. Four municipalities in northern Nicaragua constitute the Cuatro Santos area, with 25,893 inhabitants in 5,966 households (2014). A local process analyzing poverty-related problems, prioritizing suggested actions, was initiated in 1997 and generated a community action plan 2002-2015. Interventions were school breakfasts, environmental protection, water and sanitation, preventive healthcare, home gardening, microcredit, technical training, university education stipends, and use of the Internet. In 2004, a survey of basic health and demographic information was performed in the whole population, followed by surveillance updates in 2007, 2009, and 2014 linking households and individuals. Information included the house material (floor, walls) and services (water, sanitation, electricity) as well as demographic data (birth, deaths, migration). Data on participation in interventions, food security, household assets, and women's self-rated health were collected in 2014. A K-means algorithm was used to cluster the household data (56 variables) in six clusters. The poverty ranking of household clusters using the unsatisfied basic needs index variables changed when including variables describing basic capabilities. The households in the fairly rich cluster with assets such as motorbikes and computers were described as modern. Those in the fairly poor cluster, having different degrees of food insecurity, were labeled vulnerable. Poor and poorest clusters of households were traditional, e.g., in using horses for transport. Results displayed a society transforming from traditional to modern, where the forerunners were not the richest but educated, had more working members in household, had fewer children, and were food secure. Those lagging were the poor, traditional, and food insecure. The approach may be useful for an improved understanding of poverty and to direct local policy and interventions.

  • Mutated G4P[8] rotavirus associated with a nationwide outbreak of gastroenteritis in Nicaragua in 2005
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Microbiology. - 0095-1137 .- 1098-660X. ; 45:3, s. 990-997
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During February and March 2005, one of the largest national recorded outbreaks of severe acute gastroenteritis occurred in Nicaragua, affecting ≥64,000 individuals and causing ≥56 deaths, predominantly in children under 5 years of age. Through a nationwide laboratory-based study, stool samples were collected and investigated for rotavirus. Of 108 stool samples examined, 72 (67%) were positive for rotavirus. While 69% (50/72) of the positive samples were found in children less than 2 years of age, 50% (6/12) of the adult samples were positive. A mutated G4P[8] strain was the most commonly recognized strain (85%), followed by mixed G strains (8%) and G9P[8] (7%) strains. Phylogenetic analysis of the VP7 gene revealed that the G4 strains belonged to the emerging lineage Ic and was distantly related to the ST3 and VA70 G4 strains. Secondary structure predictions of the VP7 G4 protein revealed an insert of an asparagine residue in position 76, which, combined with additional mutations, surprisingly modified two downstream β-sheets at amino acid positions 80 to 85 and 115 to 119. The 2005 G4P[8] strain compared to a G4P[8] strain from 2002 had a substitution of an asparagine residue for threonine (Asn→Thr) at position 96 within antigenic region A, thus eliminating a potential glycosylation site. The mutated G4 virus was introduced in Nicaragua after 2002 and probably emerged from Brazil, Argentina, or Uruguay. Copyright © 2007, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.
