  • "Creating the Senses" : Sensation in the work of Shelley Jackson
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This monograph on the œuvre of contemporary American author and multimedia artist Shelley Jackson addresses the question of how literary works employ language to evoke sense impressions. Gilles Deleuze’s notion of aesthetic percepts is drawn on to develop a theory of literary phantom sensations which is then tested on the work of Jackson and related authors.  Although imperceptible as such, it is argued that percepts are made perceptible in art in sense-specific forms as phantom sensations. “Phantom” is not meant to indicate a pale shadow of real sensations but the intensely perceived realness of phantom limb phenomena, in accordance with Deleuze’s understanding of the virtual as real but not actual. For the sake of clarity, literary phantom sensations are divided into phantom smells, tastes, touches, sights and sounds, with a chapter devoted to each in turn. It is found that different phantom sensations serve different functions in Jackson’s work, correlated to the cultural history of the senses as outlined by recent sensory scholarship.  Phantom smells are associated with Deleuze’s concept of becoming due to their liminality. Phantom tastes contribute to an aesthetics of distaste in which shades of disgust are cultivated and drawn upon for literary effect. Phantom touch creates conceptual intimacy and invites the reader to handle words like toys in a game. Phantom sight is turned back upon itself in an anatomy of the eye. Phantom hearing is associated with forms of ventriloquism in which it is unclear who is speaking through whom and in which language itself throws its voice. However, it is also found that all phantom sensations similarly serve to create a material and affective connection between the body of the reader and the body of the text. Throughout the dissertation, Jackson’s work is read against and alongside that of other writers such as Djuna Barnes, Neil Bartlett, Brigid Brophy and Leonora Carrington. Together these form a trajectory termed minor writing for queers to come, which is meant to indicate that aesthetic and sexual-political  radicalism go hand in hand.  Furthermore, Jackson’s work is described as a form of body writing informed by feminist body art and écriture féminine. Specifically, Jackson takes her cue from early modern anatomical blazons and describes living bodies in pieces.  Her work is also described as object writing: a literary equivalent to surrealist object art.  A central method for making words more like things is to arrange her texts spatially rather than temporally, as exemplified by her electronic hypertexts.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is a study of contemporary audio fiction for children in Sweden, what is sometimes also called audio originals or born-audio books. Audio fiction is defined in the article as literature written to be recorded for audio and consumed through listening. It is a genre related to, and overlapping with, audiobooks, radio, and podcasts but obviously also with literature in printed books. While audio fiction has risen in production and popularity it is not a new phenomenon as such, but rather a kind of literature that has developed over time. The article gives historical examples of children’s audio fiction and situates the contemporary production in a larger context of a changing media world and the book market for children’s literature. The main examples used to understand the phenomenon are IJustWantToBeCool’s Sommarjobbarna (The Summer Workers, 2020–2022) and Camilla Brinck’s series on the mice Musse & Helium (2017–). These are the most popular audiobooks for children in the last years and both series as well as authors are linked to other media such as Youtube, podcast, print, and music. The theoretical conjectures derive from book history and sociology of literature, arguing that changing media for literature has direct implications for literary form, function, and dissemination. Methodologically the article is a genre study using Alastair Fowler’s concept of genre as aggregated features. Thus, a comparison is made between the two examples and other formats such as children’s print books, audiobooks, and radio drama as well as literary genres such as adventure fiction, melodrama, and slapstick. Furthermore, narrative aspects of the two audio literature examples are analyzed in terms of metafiction, voice, and sound effects.

  • Dress as Deceptive Visual Rhetoric in Eliza Haywood's Fantomina
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830. - 2157-7129. ; 11:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Writers of fiction capitalize upon dress’s potential as an agent of deception, using clothing as a means through which characters control their identity to perpetuate lies. Eliza Haywood’s Fantomina; or, Love in a Maze (1725) contains this type of heroine, and the novella shows dress can provide women with power that they can find in few other arenas. This novella constructs lying and dress as potent related tools that allow the protagonist to achieve her desires by creating untruths that pass for realities. In so doing, Fantomina capitalizes upon two related phenomena: the cultural perception of women’s status as innately deceptive and the pervasive accusation that clothing hides the truth. This essay discusses how Fantomina celebrates deception by using clothing as visual rhetoric. To do so, it first sets out the popular association of dress with deception, paying particular attention to the hoop petticoat. A discussion of the ways in which Haywood’s heroine employs dress as visual rhetoric follows, establishing how Fantomina celebrates lying as a useful strategy for women.

  • Dress as Fairy Gold: The Danger of Fairy Tale Tropes in Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle.
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Rose Mortmain in Dodie Smith’s novel I Capture the Castle (1948) believes that clothing holds out the promise to transform her not only from a penurious young woman into a wealthy wife, but also to transport her into a fairy tale. I Capture the Castle presents clothing as a powerful force for women, as it helps Rose secure the love of wealthy Simon Cotton. While Rose’s use of clothing allows her to embody a Cinderella narrative of poor girl beloved by rich man, her realization that she does not love Simon renders her fairy tale into a melodrama. In this novel, clothes perform the paradoxical work of, on the one hand, helping create a version of Rose that is vividly original in the eyes of her suitor Simon while, on the other hand, showing how her choices are as manufactured and clichéd as tired fairy tales. By invoking fairy tale motifs only to reject them, Smith’s novel reinforces the nearly magical abilities of dress to change a woman’s status while simultaneously reminding its young audience of the emotional unoriginality of the fairy tale genre. This presentation discusses how the intersection of fairy tale and clothing emphasizes the danger of women following the banal paths that society constructs for them. I Capture the Castle initially constructs both fashion and fairy tales as comfortable and familiar. Yet the analysis of three of Rose’s garments in particular shows how Dodie Smith’s novel acknowledges the power of the fairy tale even as it rebukes the unoriginality and danger of fairy tale tropes as patterns for young women’s behavior.

  • Svensk poesi
  • 2016
(Mats O Svensson, Dagens Nyheter)
