  • Equivalence et saillance dans l'expression de la localisation frontale dynamique en suédois et en français : Etude comparative et contrastive de fram et de (s’)avancer/en avant
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present study deals with the expression of frontal orientation in dynamic contexts as lexicalised in the Swedish particle fram and its French equivalents (s')avancer/en avant. The study is based on a parallel corpus containing approximately one millon words of Swedish and one million words of French fiction and it consists of a comparison made on the basis of monolingual and crosslinguistic data. The study links with current trends in both cognitive linguistics and corpus linguistics. The aim of the study is twofold : first it sets out to measure to what extent these forms express the same type of orientations and to what extent they do use these in domains other than the spatial one; second it sets out to measure to what extent these forms are used as translational equivalents as well as to list the other types of translational equivalents that occur in the corpus. This is done in order to evaluate the salience of the concept of frontal orientation in the both languages compared and to get a view of other types of conceptualizations that underlie the linguistic expression of the other language when the Swedish and the French texts do not make the same use of the expression of frontal orientation.

  • Essential Information Forms in a Condition Monitoring Context
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of COMADEM. - 1363-7681. ; 12:4, s. 10-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the study is to describe an information theory in order to achieve a fruitful discussion of information within condition monitoring in a condition based maintenance context. The paper is based on a qualitative and interdisciplinary approach. A case study is performed at four Swedish paper mills and one condition monitoring supplier. Interviews have been the main method for data collection; however, observations and studies of artifacts are included in the study also. The main contribution of the study is a framework that visualizes how data and five different forms of information interact and turns into knowledge about a machine’s condition. These forms of information are all necessary to take into consideration when implementing and operating a condition based maintenance program. The research results state that it is relevant to allow and encourage the technicians and operators to utilize several forms of information when assessing the condition of an asset, and, thus, to not put too much trust in the condition monitoring technology alone. Also, it can be important to encourage user interface designers to reflect upon the different contexts and information forms as they design information in a condition monitoring interface.

  • Evaluating the impact of software process simulations - a case study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 5th International Workshop on Software Process Simulation and Modeling (ProSim 2004) W11L Workshop - 26th International Conference on Software Engineering. - 0863414265 ; , s. 217-221
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The software process simulation research field has been growing in recent years. Much effort has been used for developing detailed software process simulation models. However, few studies are available characterizing the effect process simulation models could have when introduced to an organization. Furthermore, most published work in this area has been focused on the effect that the models have for project management. This motivates a study with focus on other categories of project staff, and evaluation of the benefits that could be gained by the introduction of a software process model. We describe an ongoing qualitative study evaluating the impact of the introduction of a software process simulation model in an industrial setting. The focus is to analyse the impact the model has among developers and testers in a specific organization, and to evaluate the model's suitability as a tool for gaining better understanding of the dynamic process behaviour among the study participants

  • Exploring the Software Verification and Validation Process with Focus on Efficient Fault Detection
  • 2003
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Quality is an aspect of high importance in software development projects. The software organizations have to ensure that the quality of their developed products is what the customers expect. Thus, the organizations have to verify that the product is functioning as expected and validate that the product is what the customers expect. Empirical studies have shown that in many software development projects as much as half of the projected schedule is spent on the verification and validation activities. The research in this thesis focuses on exploring the state of practice of the verification and validation process and investigating methods for achieving efficient fault detection during the software development. The thesis aims at increasing the understanding of the activities conducted to verify and validate the software products, by the means of empirical research in the software engineering domain. A survey of eleven Swedish software development organizations investigates the current state of practice of the verification and validation activities, and how these activities are managed today. The need for communicating and visualising the verification and validation process was expressed during the survey. Therefore the usefulness of process simulations was evaluated in the thesis. The simulations increased the understanding of the relationships between different activities among the involved participants. In addition, an experiment was conducted to compare the performance of the two verification and validation activities, inspection and testing. In the future work, empirical research, including experiment results, will be used for calibration and validation of simulation models, with focus on using simulation as a method for decision support in the verification and validation process.

  • From Passenger to Pilot – Using Formative Assessment to Support Students With Intellectual Disabilities to Become Self-Regulated Learners
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Education. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2504-284X. ; 7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Students with intellectual disabilities (ID) risk leaving school without having the opportunity to develop their independence to become less reliant on others. This study aims to gain insights into how formative assessment as a teaching design can support self-regulated learning (SRL) among students with ID. Two experienced Swedish special school teachers, using formative assessment to support students’ SRL competence, participated in this study. Data consisted of the teachers’ written teaching descriptions, classroom observations, and teacher interviews. The analysis showed that the teachers managed to implement a formative classroom practice aiming to support the students to develop subject-matter knowledge as well as SRL skills. Three themes of challenges were identified: Low expectations and caretaking, Experiences of shortcomings, and Learning difficulties. Overcoming such challenges is discussed. The study shows promising examples of the use of theories and principles of formative assessment to promote SRL competence among students with ID and also incentives for doing so.

  • Informationsdesign i tillståndsövervakning : En studie av ett bildskärmsbaserat användargränssnitt för tillståndsövervakning och tillståndsbaserat underhåll
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This research concerns the information design and visual design of graphical user interfaces (GUI) in the condition monitoring and condition-based maintenance (CBM) of production equipment. It also concerns various communicative aspects of a GUI, which is used to monitor the condition of assets. It applies to one Swedish vendor and its intentions to design information. In addition, it applies to the interaction between the GUI and its individual visual elements, as well as the communication between the GUI and the users (in four Swedish paper mills). The research is performed as a single case study. Interviews and observations have been the main methods for data collection. Empirical data is analyzed with methods inferred to semiotics, rhetoric and narratology. Theories in information science and regarding remediation are used to interpret the user interface design. The key conclusion is that there are no less than five different forms of information, all important when determining the conditions of assets. These information forms include the words, images and shapes in the GUI, the machine components and peripherals equipment, the information that takes form when personnel communicate machine conditions, the personnel’s subjective associations, and the information forms that relate to the personnel's actions and interactions.Preventive technicians interpret the GUI-information individually and collectively in relation to these information forms, which influence their interpretation and understanding of the GUI information. Social media in the GUI makes it possible to represent essential information that takes form when employees communicate a machine’s condition. Photographs may represent information forms as a machine’s components, peripherals, and local environment change over time. Moreover, preventative technicians may use diagrams and photographs in the GUI to change attitudes among the personnel at the mills and convince them, for example, of a machine’s condition or the effectiveness of CBM as maintenance policy.

  • Investigating Test Teams' Defect Detection in Function Test
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: ESEM07 - First International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement, September, 20-21, 2007, Madrid, Spain. - 1938-6451. - 9780769528861 ; , s. 458-460
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a case study, the defect detection for functional test teams is investigated. In the study it is shown that the test teams not only discover defects in the features under test that they are responsible for, but also defects in interacting components, belonging to other test teams’ features. The paper presents the metrics collected and the results as such from the study, which gives insights into a complex development environment and highlights the need for coordination between test teams in function test.
