  • Halo effects in the low-energy scattering of 15 C with heavy targets
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Acta Physica Polonica, Series B.. - 1509-5770 .- 0587-4254. ; 51:3, s. 731-736
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron-rich carbon isotope 15C was postulated to be a halo nucleus (Sn = 1215 keV, S2n = 9395 keV) according to different high-energy experiments. If so, it would be the only halo nucleus exhibiting a "pure" s-wave structure of the ground state. At low collision energies, the effect of this halo structure should manifest as a strong absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section, with a total suppression of the nuclear rainbow due to the large neutron transfer and breakup probabilities, enhanced by the halo configuration. The IS619 experiment, carried out at the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN (Switzerland), is the first dynamical study of this nucleus at energies around the Coulomb barrier. It aims to probe the halo structure via the measurement of the elastic cross section on a high-Z 208Pb target. Preliminary results of the elastic cross section are discussed and compared to Optical Model calculations.

  • Study of the scattering of 15C at energies around the Coulomb barrier
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 1643:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The neutron rich carbon isotope 15C is the only known case of an almost "pure"2s1/2 single-neutron halo ground state configuration. At collision energies around the Coulomb barrier the reaction dynamics is expected to be dominated by single neutron transfer and breakup. To investigate these effects, we have measured the scattering of 15C with a 208Pb target at 65 MeV at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN (Geneva, Switzerland). The preliminary data demonstrates the presence of a strong long-range absorption pattern in the angular distribution of the elastic cross section. The results are discussed in the framework of Optical Model calculations.

  • Comprehensive ventilation/perfusion SPECT
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Medicine. - 0161-5505. ; 42:8, s. 1288-1294
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lung scintigraphy is the primary tool for diagnostics of pulmonary embolism. A perfusion study is often complemented by a ventilation study. Intermediate probability scans are frequent. Our goal was to develop a fast method for tomographic ventilation and perfusion scintigraphy to improve the diagnostic value of lung scintigraphy. METHODS: SPECT was performed with a dual-head gamma camera. Acquisition parameters were determined using a thorax phantom. Ventilation tomography after inhalation of 30 MBq (99m)Tc-diethylenetriaminepentaacetate (DTPA) aerosol was, without patient movement, followed by perfusion tomography after an intravenous injection of 100 MBq (99m)Tc-labeled macroaggregated albumin (MAA). Total SPECT acquisition time was 20 min. (99m)Tc-DTPA clearance, calculated from initial and final SPECT projections, was used for correction of the ventilation projection set before iterative reconstruction of ventilation and perfusion. The ventilation background was subtracted from the perfusion tomograms. A normalized ventilation/perfusion quotient (V/P quotient) image set was calculated. The method was evaluated on a trial group of 15 patients. RESULTS: Ventilation and perfusion images had adequate quality and showed ventilation/perfusion (V/Q quotient) relationships more clearly than did planar images. Frontal and sagittal slices were superior to planar scintigraphy for characterization of embolized areas. The V/Q quotient was supportive, particularly in the patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. CONCLUSION: Fast, high-quality, ventilation/perfusion SPECT with standard isotopes doses is feasible and may contribute to higher objectivity in evaluating lung embolism as well as other lung diseases. The costs for the procedure and patient care until diagnosis are low because of the comprehensive system for the study and, particularly, the short time for its completion.

  • Exclusive measurements of quasi-free proton scattering reactions in inverse and complete kinematics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 753, s. 204-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Quasi-free scattering reactions of the type (p, 2p) were measured for the first time exclusively in complete and inverse kinematics, using a 12C beam at an energy of ~400 MeV/u as a benchmark. This new technique has been developed to study the single-particle structure of exotic nuclei in experiments with radioactive-ion beams. The outgoing pair of protons and the fragments were measured simultaneously, enabling an unambiguous identification of the reaction channels and a redundant measurement of the kinematic observables. Both valence and deeply-bound nucleon orbits are probed, including those leading to unbound states of the daughter nucleus. Exclusive (p, 2p) cross sections of 15.8(18) mb, 1.9(2) mb and 1.5(2) mb to the low-lying 0p-hole states overlapping with the ground state (3/2-) and with the bound excited states of 11B at 2.125 MeV (1/2-) and 5.02 MeV (3/2-), respectively, were determined via γ-ray spectroscopy. Particle-unstable deep-hole states, corresponding to proton removal from the 0s-orbital, were studied via the invariant-mass technique. Cross sections and momentum distributions were extracted and compared to theoretical calculations employing the eikonal formalism. The obtained results are in a good agreement with this theory and with direct-kinematics experiments. The dependence of the proton-proton scattering kinematics on the internal momentum of the struck proton and on its separation energy was investigated for the first time in inverse kinematics employing a large-acceptance measurement.

  • Quasi-free proton knockout from 12C on carbon target at 398 MeV/u
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 797
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The proton-removal mechanism of the 12C→11B reaction induced on a carbon target via elementary nucleon-nucleon scattering is investigated in exclusive triple-coincidence measurements. The observed two-nucleon angular correlations are found to be consistent with quasi-free scattering of a projectile-like proton off a target-like nucleon. Exclusive cross sections for one-step pp and pn interactions are determined as σpp=17.2(12) mb and σpn=18.2(18), respectively. The extracted quasi-free component amounts up to 58(4)% of the total proton-removal cross section. The results are compared to total proton-removal cross sections obtained from the experiment and eikonal reaction theory.

  • Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in the Assessment of Respiratory Mechanics
  • 2004
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis was to test the capability of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to estimate respiratory mechanics during mechanical ventilation (MV). ANNs are universal function approximators and can extract information from complex signals. We evaluated, in an animal model of acute lung injury, whether ANN can assess respiratory system resistance (RRS) and compliance (CRS) using the tracings of pressure at airways opening (PAW), inspiratory flow (V’) and tidal volume, during an end-inspiratory hold maneuver (EIHM). We concluded that ANN can estimate CRS and RRS during an EIHM. We also concluded that the use of tracings obtained by non-biological models in the learning process has the potential of substituting biological recordings. We investigated whether ANN can extract CRS using tracings of PAW and V’, without any intervention of an inspiratory hold maneuver during continuous MV. We concluded that CRS can be estimated by ANN during volume control MV, without the need to stop inspiratory flow.We tested whether ANN, fed by inspiratory PAW and V’, are able to measure static total positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEPtot, stat) during ongoing MV. In an animal model we generated dynamic pulmonary hyperinflation by shortening expiratory time. Different levels of external PEEP (PEEPAPP) were applied. Results showed that ANN can estimate PEEPtot, stat reliably, without any influence from the level of PEEPAPP.We finally compared the robustness of ANN and multi-linear fitting (MLF) methods in extracting CRS when facing signals corrupted by perturbations. We observed that during the application of random noise, ANN and MLF maintain a stable performance, although in these conditions MLF may show better results. ANN have more stable performance and yield a more robust estimation of CRS than MLF in conditions of transient sensor disconnection. We consider ANN to be an interesting technique for the assessment of respiratory mechanics.
