- När jag började kursen Gestaltande forskningsprocesser var jag mitt i arbetet med ett Kuprojekt "Industridesignern som intuitiv syntetiker" där jag undersökte den praktiska kunskapen (Schön 1991) och intuitionens roll för industridesigners kunskapsutveckling och yrkesutövning (Dreyfus & Athanasiou 1996). Målet var att föra ett teoretiskt resonemang kring den praktiska kunskapens betydelse, samt att undersöka hur man på ett metodiskt sätt skulle kunna stödja kunskapsutvecklingen för designers. Syftet med kursen Gestaltande forskningsprocesser var att undersöka ett mer experimentellt och reflekterande skrivande och jag såg en möjlighet att korsbefrukta Ku-projektet med denna form av utforskning. I projektet har jag tagit fasta på reflektionens roll i designerns arbete. I industridesignerns yrkesroll ligger mycket av kompetensen och kunskapen dolt, det är kunskap vi har och dagligen använder men inte explicit uttalar. En viss del av den kunskapen kan synliggöras genom olika typer av reflektion, där skrivandet är en av dem.

Swop projects

- Swop Projects (2003–2007) was a long-term art and research project that functioned as a platform for the production and dissemination of material and ideas dealing with contemporary political, economic and social debate. We initiated the project as an attempt to cross national and academic boundaries and collect a variety of voices and opinions with the intention of visualizing models that linked economic and environmental concerns. Together with professionals with a similar focus we wanted to analyse inequalities regarding the uneven access to power, to global flows of resources and information and to explore models that challenge these conditions. We initiated a dialogue on informal economies and systems based on open source and participatory thinking in a space we occupied at the time – a storefront at Frederiksberg, Copenhagen. The programme comprised a series of open talks and discussions featuring artists, economists and activists. As a result of these encounters, we established a research archive at our premises and online that contained interviews with the people we had met, i.e. groups and individuals whose work is based on ideas of generosity, local currencies and ways of organising sustainable systems. Swop Projects has since developed into a number of initiatives that include an experimental alternative exchange currency in the Hidden Flow Exchange Project; the distribution of the free newspaper Gratis; the Give Away Shop, which highlights gift economies; and Give Away in Circulation, a project that collects and disseminates ideas about circulation and open source systems. The Swop Archive continued to develop throughout the Swop Projects period. It now consists of interviews made in various contexts, some excerpts of which are reproduced in this book. The projects are presented in a chronological order, starting with a number of works that became the starting point of Swop Projects and that were carried out prior to the launch. Several of the projects are concerned with a reaction to the fact that the public sphere, perceived as an open arena for cultural exchange, is shrinking. The attempts that have been made over the last few years to transform cultural products into “private property” cannot only be associated with the material dimensions of public spaces; cultural products can easily be exchanged and distributed via the Internet. Paradoxically, these possibilities have been made more difficult due to increased regulation and copyright control. Our work with Swop Projects reflects an interest in developing non-commercial methods for the distribution of goods and services and the exchange of information. In line with the project’s notions on Open Source and of recycling, we also chose to reproduce texts that were previously published within the scope of the project. The objective of this book is to present Swop Projects and some of the initiatives and projects we conducted within this framework. Apart from the material, documentation and concrete output, the book also includes three texts commissioned from authors to give an idea of the contexts in which the various projects operated. As a backdrop, we chose to include a text by writer and researcher Kolya Abramsky, which outlines the political and economical climate. We asked Emily Pethick, director of CASCO at the time, to contribute a text on how to build relationships around an art institution by collaborating with artists. We also asked freelance curator Katarina Stenbeck to contextualize the project from a contemporary art perspective. To us, the work of developing alternative strategies and micro-models is a collective effort involving individuals from various groups and local communities. In order to understand local contexts and, not least, to be able to imagine alternative destinations, we have operated within an international network. We started in Copenhagen and around Denmark. The project then brought us further afield to cities in Europe and beyond. We met people and visited local communities whose relationship to contemporary culture is based on ideas of co-operation, collectivism and social diversity in the local environment. During the years we spent on Swop Projects we learned a lot, both personally and professionally, through meeting people who inspired us, presented us with ideas and who generously shared their knowledge and experience. We hope that we, through this book, can communicate the views of a political and artistic sphere as well as share some of the critical and diverse ideas that we have had the privilege to come across during the course of our work. We hope to inspire others and to arouse the readers’ curiosity in the same way as our own curiosity was kindled.

You Have To Believe : apropå ord som Tro, Personligt, Distans och Dokumentärt

- När jag började arbeta med You Have To Believe hade jag en viss idé om hur det färdiga verket skulle vara. Norrlands ljusa kvällar och sol genom den vita tältduken. Det var en tydlig bild om vilka olika komponenter arbetet skulle innehålla, men inte precis hur klippen skulle se ut. Det går inte att förutse vad som händer under filmandet. Det är många val som skall göras, och allt går inte som man tänkt – ibland blir det bättre och ibland blir det sämre. Jag har slutat att se det som ett misslyckande när jag frångår min första idé. Jag börjar filma utifrån min intention, men räknar med att delarna i projektet faller på plats under arbetets gång. Jag stannar upp och ser hur arbetet ändras, om det dyker upp nya frågeställningar. Jag försöker komma åt den rätta tonen både innehållsmässigt och visuellt. På liknande sätt som när man skriver en text så har jag vissa nyckelidéer som jag förhåller mig till, resten flyter på. Men jag skulle varken kalla det Guds ledning eller att slumpen styr. I den här texten kommer jag att undersöka de val jag gör i en konstnärlig process och sätta frågeställningar kring mitt arbete i relation till hur andra konstnärer har arbetat med liknande frågor. Jag tar också upp egna arbeten som relaterar till You Have To Believe, på olika plan. Jag kommer även att gå in på de narrativa val jag gör och relatera till nutida dokumentärfilm och filmaren Eric M Nilsson. Betydelsen av voice-over har varit centralt i mitt arbete och jag kommer att belysa genusaspekten kring voice-over. Under de senaste åren har jag framför allt uppehållit mig kring religiösa frågeställningar i mina arbeten. Det kan gälla bibeltolkningar och tron på "jordens undergång", men också benägenheten att vilja tro på fantastiska samband som återfinns utanför det vi traditionellt kallar religion. Även om Sverige är ett sekulariserat land så fungerar kristendomen som en gemensam referensram, ett historiskt filter. Jag är uppvuxen inom pingströrelsen och låter delvis mina egna erfarenheter vävas in i arbetena. Kristendomen handlar inte bara om en privat gudstro. Där finns också en gemensam överenskommelse, en gemensam värld av normalitet där man accepterar regler som är otänkbara utanför religionen. I You Have To Believe har jag filmat i den norrländska byn Husbondliden, där vår familj har en liten sommarstuga och där jag tillbringade alla somrar när jag var liten. Där hålls även en stor pingstkonferens en gång per år, Lapplandsveckan, och det är den jag har utgått ifrån.

- Det konstnärliga utvecklingsarbetet syftar till att vidga, fördjupa och belysa teori och praktik inom det konstnärliga fältet. Genom att fånga upp teman som inte tidigare artikulerats inom formgivnings- och konstområdet vill två färg- och ljusforskare, en designteoretikeer, en formgivare och tillika silversmed, en konstnär samt en "sync-designer" på detta sätt ge röst åt var sitt angeläget ämne.Avsikten med den här publikationen är att föra samman olika samexisterande synsätt inom fältet konstnärligt utvecklingsarbete. Texterna i antologin Fem konstnärliga utvecklingsprojekt från 2009 är resultatet av fem forsknings-/utvecklingsprojekt, finansierade av Konstfacks nämnd för konstnärligt utvecklingsarbete (KU-nämnden). Projektdeltagarna har varit: Dan Spegel, Anna Lundh, Sara Kristoffersson, Anders Ljungberg och Ulf Klarén/Karin Fridell Anter.

Special emphasis is put on the spatial interaction of colour and light in architecture. The work has the form of seminars/workshops where colour and light specialists from different academic disciplines (six Nordic universities) and companies (light sources, colorimetric standards, window glass) examine different aspects of the problem complex. Sub-projects deal with the epistemology and concepts of colour and light, with methods for analysing colour and light in existing architectural spaces and with the relationship between energy and light quality.

- Ever since the emigration from the Nordic countries the Old world and the New world have maintained an exchange of ideas, customs, and material culture. This cultural heritage consists of more than remnants of the past. Drawing on theories of material culture and performance this article highlights the role of gifts in mate-rializing relationships between individuals, families and organizations in the wake of migration. First, I build on a suggested coinage of the term heritage gifts as a way of materializing relationships. Thereafter, I map out the numerous roles which a Swedish bridal crown play in the United States: as museum object, object of display and loaned to families for wedding ceremonies in America. The trans-fers and transformations of the bridal crown enhances a drama of a migration her-itage. This dynamic drama brings together kin in Sweden and America and maps specific locations into a flexible space via the trajectory of crown-clad female bodies.

- In this article we discuss an ongoing project named Performing Knowledge A project to improve knowledge in higher education through a double perspective: Theory and Performativity. This project is situated at the Department of Visual Art Education at Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, Sweden. The aim is to investigate and develop pedagogy and methods through double perspectives, whereby scientific research is joined with artistic practice as different, but compatible forms of knowledge in learning and degree projects in higher education. The research examined how different forms of knowledge appear in learning processes as well as in student theses; focus is equally placed on forms of representation and presentation. The article presents and discusses two different student projects as examples of performative knowledge. In this text we draw upon a presentation held at the 32nd InSEA World Conference, in Osaka, August 2008.
