  • Users’ Influence in Social-service Innovations : Two Swedish Case Studies
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Social Entrepreneurship. - : Routledge Taylor and Francis. - 1942-0676 .- 1942-0684. ; 1:2, s. 190-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article uses case studies to address the sources of social innovation, a major contributor to economic growth and welfare services. Following the findings of user-innovation research in the commercial sector, the authors found that social-problem users innovate new social services for solving specific social problems. They also found that superior problem and solution knowledge is one reason for their ability to do this, that their legitimacy with other potential users is an important factor for their innovations’ diffusion and that the legitimacy of the new social services’ operators with other stakeholders is important for acquiring resources for their projects. This contributes to the understanding of the management of social innovation using the established theoretical framework of user innovation.

  • Performance evaluations as gender barriers in professional organizations : A study of auditing firms
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Gender, Work and Organization. - : Wiley. - 0968-6673 .- 1468-0432. ; 17:6, s. 721-749
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Gendering processes often take the form of organizational subtexts, that is, seemingly gender-neutral practices that have gender implications. The purpose of this article is to study performance evaluations, which, based on management by objectives systems, may appear neutral, but tend to be based on male norms of what is regarded as good performance. We analysed the careers and performance evaluations of 391 newly licenced Swedish auditors, using an open-ended question survey. In this industry 50 per cent of new employees and 92 per cent of partners are men. Even in the early stages of their careers, there are notable differences between women and men. The women achieved less and show lower career ambitions and expectations as well as greater intentions to leave the auditing industry. Performance evaluations are also perceived differently, men focusing on what is evaluated (reflecting the perceptions of those at higher hierarchical levels) and women focusing on who does the evaluating and how.

  • Book-to-Market and Size Effect: Compensations for risks or outcomes of market inefficiencies
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Finance. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1466-4364 .- 1351-847X. ; 16:2, s. 119-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We employ the optimal orthogonal portfolio approach to investigate if the size and book-to-market effects in US data are related to risk factors beside the market risk. This method enables us to estimate the upper limit of the risk premium, due to observed as well as all possible unobserved factors, which can be derived from a linear asset pricing model. As a corollary, it is possible to divide the observed average asset return into three parts: one explained by the market factor, one due to the unobserved factors, and finally the non-risk-based (NRB) component. Our empirical results confirm the existence of latent risk factors, which cannot be captured by the market index. In particular, the size effect is related to some other background risk factors than the market portfolio, but a large part of observed book-to-market effect has a NRB explanation.

  • Business Simulation Exercises in Small Business Management Education : Using Principles and Ideas from Action Learning
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Action Learning. - Abingdon, Oxon, UK : Carfax Publishing. - 1476-7333 .- 1476-7341. ; 7:1, s. 3-16
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent calls to close the rigour-relevance gap in business school education have suggested incorporating principles and ideas from action learning in small business management education. In this paper we discuss how business simulation exercises can be used as a platform to trigger students' learning by providing them with a platform where they can merge theory with practice. We provide theoretical arguments accompanied by illustrations to show how such initiatives can create a more student-centred teaching structure than what is usually practised in contemporary business school education. This may in turn work as a potential bridge between the safe harbour of traditional classroom teaching and the more chaotic and complex world of managerial practice.

  • Individual responsibility for what? : A conceptual framework for exploring the suitability of private financing in a publicly funded health-care system
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Health Economics, Policy and Law. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1744-1331 .- 1744-134X. ; 5:2, s. 201-223
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Policymakers in publicly funded health-care systems are frequently required to make intricate decisions on which health-care services to include or exclude from the basic health-care package. Although it seems likely that the concept of individual responsibility is an essential feature of such decisions, it is rarely explicitly articulated or evaluated in health policy. This paper presents a tentative conceptual framwork for exploring when health-care services contain characteristics that facilitate individual responsibility through private financing. Six attributes for exploring the suitability of private financing for specific health-care commodities are identified: (i) it should enable individuals to value the need and quality both before and after utilization; (ii) it should be targeted toward individuals with a reasonable level of individual autonomy; (iii) it should be associated with low levels of positive externalities; (iv) it should be associated with a demand sufficient to generate a private market; (v) it should be associated with payments affordable for most individuals; and finally, (vi) it should be associated with 'lifestyle enhancements' rather than 'medical necessities'. The tentative framework enables exploration of individual responsibility connected to health care as a heterogeneous group of commodities, and allows policymakers to make decisions on rationing by design rather than default.

  • Volatility Risk Premium, Risk Aversion and the Cross-Section of Stock Returns
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Financial Review. - 0732-8516. ; , s. 1079-1100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We test if innovations in investor risk aversion are a priced factor in the stock market. Time series tests show that the new factor partly explains the strong momentum effect in stock returns. Furthermore, using 25 portfolios sorted on book-to-market and size as test assets, our new factor together with the market factor explains 64% of the variation in average returns compared to 60% for the Fama-French model. The new factor is generally significant with an estimated risk premium close to its time series mean also when industry portfolios and portfolios sorted on previous returns are augmented to the test assets.

  • Resistance to change in public sector mergers
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nordiske Organisasjonsstudier. - 1501-8237. ; :04, s. 30-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the private as well as the public sectors, mergers are common events. Yet, research on mergers and acquisitions (M&A) is based primarily on studies from the private sector, and it is assumed that conclusions from this context are valid for any context. In this article, the characteristics of resistance in public sector mergers is explored. Resistance is a central aspect in the M&A literature, as well as in the broader literature on organizational change. Observations from two case studies of mergers in the central public administration in Sweden – the Swedish National Audit Office and the Swedish Social Insurance Agency – are reported. Five propositions are established. For instance, it is suggested that vertical resistance tends to become more extensive in public mergers than in mergers in the private sector. This vertical resistance occurs between management and employees. It can be explained partly by different standpoints as concerns the employee’s right to influence managerial decisions. This is an argument that can be legitimized by the employee by referring to whistle-blowing ethics and the role as a guardian of democracy.
