    • This paper investigates trust behavior in situations where decision-makers are large groups and the decision mechanism is collective. Theories from behavioral economics and psychology suggest that trust in such situations may differ from interindividual trust. The experimental results here reveal a large difference in trust but not in trustworthiness between the individual and collective setting. Furthermore, a field experiment captures the determinants of collective trust behavior among two Swedish cohorts. Beliefs about the other group and ones own group are strongly associated with collective trustworthiness and trust behavior.

    • Managers who select projects have a moral responsibility. The purpose of this paper is to present a template to assess this responsibility so that it can be put into practice. Responsibility is here defined as a combination of attributability—what choices the project manager can ultimately be praised or blamed for, and of accountability—what choices the project manager has to be prepared to answer for. The template combines these two aspects of responsibility with the project selection process divided into three phases: initialization phase, appraisal phase, and decision phase. Various moral philosophers are used to highlight the moral issues at stake for each of these two dimensions of responsibility at each stage of the project selection process. Concluding remarks underlines the need for project selectors to adapt to the specific context when they use the template.

    • A number of measures have been taken by the society to ensure gender equality inhigher education. Nevertheless, women still face great difficulties when pursuingan academic career. Our aim is to increase the understanding of how the society,conceptualised as the organisational field, interacts with organisational factors andpersonal actions as women try to establish themselves within academia. Wefollowed a group of female PhD students and their struggle to graduate at aSwedish, traditionally male-dominated, university department. The paper analyseshow actors and regulations in the society interact with the department’s genderedstructures and practices. Three processes that influenced the women’s careeropportunities have been identified – a process of integration, liberation andlegitimatisation. We also show that women can get accepted and realise theirshort-term objective, based on support from the society, while not necessarilybeing included by the department in a longer-term perspective.

    • This paper explores strategic change communication, framed by the idea that managers can be viewed as rhetoricians. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss senior managers’ subjective experiences of rhetorical aspects of change management. The paper draws on a case study from ABB Sweden (a power and automation technology company). In-depth interviews with senior managers, with vast experience of change management, constitute the empirical source. The most important finding is the managers’ overall reluctance towards rhetoric. According to the managers in this study, a rhetorician is an over-enthusiastic person who “waves his arms when speaking”. To master the art of rhetoric is not believed to be of particular importance when managing strategic change. This paper contributes to change management communication insofar as it gives voice to the individual manager. This voice indicates; in a time when rhetoric, storytelling, and charismatic leadership are making ground; that the understanding of rhetoric is much more limited than the general impression might suggest.
