  • The Other Side of Enjoyment : Short-circuiting Marketing and Creativity in the Experience Economy
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : Sage. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323. ; 17:3, s. 363-378
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The notion of experience economy asserts that staging the most mundane consumption practise as individualized entertainment adds value to the producer and consumer alike (Pine and Gilmore, 1999).This article questions this assumption of mere added value.Probing into an interplay between a marketing fantasy and a customer movement passionately engaging with its promise, it draws attention to a structural inability to enjoy the pleasures that the experience economy revolves around. Invoking the theoretical apparatus outlined by Lacan in The Other Side of Psychoanalysis (2007), the analysis sheds light on a social dynamics regulating this impossibility. This brings to the fore a range of ethical, political and economic consequences left largely untended by the literature, and dwelling on the other side of the lustrous enjoyment that so easily captures our imagination.

  • The Effect of the Spillover on the Granger Causality Test
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Statistics. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0266-4763 .- 1360-0532. ; 37:9, s. 1473-1486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the properties of the Granger causality test in stationary and stable vector autoregressive models under the presence of spillover effects, i.e., causality in variance. The Wald test and the WW test (the Wald test with White’s proposed heteroskedasticity-consistent covariance matrix estimator imposed) are analyzed. The investigation is undertaken by using Monte Carlo simulation in which two different sample sizes and six different kinds of data generating process are used. The results show that the Wald test overrejects the null hypothesis both with and without the spillover effect, and that the overrejection in the latter case is more severe in larger samples. The size properties of the WW test are satisfactory when there is spillover between the variables. Only when there is feedback in the variance is the size of the WW test slightly affected. The Wald test is shown to have higher power than the WW test when the errors follow a GARCH(1,1) process without a spillover effect. When there is spillover, the power of both tests deteriorates, which implies that the spillover has a negative effect on the causality tests.

  • Persuasion in experimental ultimatum games
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Economics Letters. - : Elsevier BV. - 0165-1765 .- 1873-7374. ; 108:1, s. 16-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study persuasion effects in experimental ultimatum games and find that Proposers' payoffs significantly increase if, along with offers, they can send messages which Responders read before deciding. Higher payoffs are driven by both lower offers and higher acceptance rates.

  • Costly Renegotiation in Repeated Bertrand Games
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Theoretical Economics. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1935-1704. ; 10:1, Article 51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper extends the concept of weak renegotiation-proof equilibrium (WRP) to allow for costly renegotiation and shows that even small renegotiation costs can have dramatic effects on the set of equilibria. More specifically, the paper analyzes the infinitely repeated Bertrand game. It is shown that for every level of renegotiation cost, there exists a discount factor such that any collusive profit can be supported as an equilibrium outcome. Hence, any arbitrary small renegotiation cost will suffice to facilitate collusive outcomes for sufficiently patient firms. This result stands in stark contrast to the unique pure strategy WRP equilibrium without renegotiation costs, which implies marginal-cost pricing in every period. Moreover, in comparison to the findings of Mc-Cutcheon (1997), who states that renegotiation costs have to be substantial to facilitate collusion, this result points to a quite different conclusion.

  • Tracing the drivers of B2B brand strength and value
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • By building a strong brand that is favourably perceived by target customers, a firm can establish a competitive advantage that enables greater revenues and profitability. This is at least what the branding literature always has assumed, and something few marketing and brand managers seem to disagree with. When asked how exactly a brand can be charged with such great value, however, neither academia nor practitioners can provide definitive answers. This is especially true for business-to-business markets (B2B): although some of the world’s strongest and most valuable brands are operating in B2B markets, research on this area is clearly trailing behind business reality. This thesis aims at bridging the fuzzy and subjective customer-based perspective on brands with their potential economic outcomes for brand-owning firms. It does so by studying a single case (a packaging solutions supplier) in great detail, including face-to-face interviews and 678 observations drawn from a survey completed by professional packaging buyers in 8 countries across Europe. The study relies mainly on brand equity theory, together with thoughts from theories on shareholder value, psychology, corporate branding, business relationships and industrial marketing. More specifically, it is concerned with understanding the customer-perceived determinants (brand image) of brand strength and brand value in business markets. Or, in other words: which specific customer perceptions and behaviours make a brand valuable and profitable? The proposed model, which is the main outcome of this study, can be seen as a first step towards an integrated and nuanced B2B Brand Equity Chain. The model divides brand strength into a volume premium and price premium dimension, and includes five brand image dimensions: brand familiarity, product solution, service relationship, company reputation and brand community. The empirical findings support previous work within the area, but also add a number of elements that increases the explanatory power of existing models, and establishes a unique link between branding and bottom-line performance in business markets.

  • Coordination in humanitarian logistics through clusters
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 40:8/9, s. 657-674
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – In the field of humanitarianism, cluster thinking has been suggested as a solution to the lack of coordinated disaster response. Clusters for diverse functions, including sheltering, logistics and water and sanitation, can be viewed as an effort to achieve functional coordination. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a greater understanding of the potential of cluster concepts using supply chain coordination and inter‐cluster coordination. The focus is on the conceptual level rather than on specific means of coordination.Design/methodology/approach – The cluster concept in humanitarian relief, along with some key empirical issues, is based on a case study. The concept is then compared to the literature on clusters and coordination in order to develop a theoretical framework with propositions on the tradeoffs between different types of coordination.Findings – The results provide important reflections on one of the major trends in contemporary development of humanitarian logistics. This paper shows that there is a tradeoff between different types of coordination, with horizontal coordination inside cluster drawing attention away from important issues of the supply chain as well as the need to coordinate among the clusters.Research limitations/implications – There is a need for more in‐depth case studies of experiences with clusters in various operations. Various perspectives should be taken into account, including the field, responding agencies, beneficiaries, donors, military and commercial service providers, both during and between disasters.Practical implications – The paper presents the tradeoffs between different types of coordination, in which basic aims such as standardisation through functional coordination, must be balanced with cross‐functional and vertical coordination in order to more successfully serve the users' composite needs.Originality/value – The focus on possible trade‐offs between different types of coordination is an important complement to the literature, which often assumes simultaneous high degrees of horizontal and vertical coordination.

  • An action learning method for increased innovation capability in organisations
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Action Learning: Research and Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-7341 .- 1476-7333. ; 7:2, s. 167-179
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product innovation in highly complex and technological areas, such as medical technology, puts high requirements on the innovation capability of an organisation. Previous research and publications have highlighted organisational issues and learning matters as important and necessary for the development of innovation capability. Action learning requires reflections of the ways things are carried out, changes in current actions, implementation and improvement and thereafter another round of reflections. This could be difficult for one organisation to carry out internally and so this research uses a learning network setup involving several organisations for inter-organisational action learning. The purpose of this article is to describe the learning network setup used in a current action learning project in the med tech industry, and to discuss the initial experiences gained. The research project aims at increasing the innovation capability of the participating organisations. The method used is based on action learning and involves representatives from industrial partners, public health organisations and academic partners. The different organisations run innovation projects over a time period of three years, and meet three times a year in learning network sessions with the purpose of developing knowledge by action learning interaction between the different. During these learning network sessions the participants are facilitated to go through different phases: reflections, new concepts, new actions, implementations and new reflections. The paper elaborates on theories of innovation capability and learning networks, and thereafter the methods of action research, experiential learning and action learning. The action learning network structure, the experiences gained in the initial phases of the project, and the experience of action learning and learning networks is then presented. The importance of trust building between partners in the network in order to facilitate action learning and development of innovation capability is experienced and discussed, as is the learning that takes place in the interaction between academics from different disciplines in their interaction with the practitioners.
