  • Reflect and learn together - when two supervisors interact in the learning support process of nurse education
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0966-0429 .- 1365-2834. ; 20:2, s. 152-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim  To describe the importance of supervisors working together in supporting the learning process of nurse students through reflective caring science supervision. Background  A supervision model has been developed in order to meet the need for interweaving theory and practice. The model is characterized by learning reflection in caring science. A unique aspect of the present project was that the student groups were led by a teacher and a nurse.Method  Data were collected through interviews with the supervisors. The analysis was performed with a phenomenological approach. Results  The results showed that theory and practice can be made more tangible and interwoven by using two supervisors in a dual supervision. The essential structure is built on the constituents ‘Reflection as Learning Support’, ‘Interweaving Caring Science with the Patient’s Narrative’, ‘The Student as a Learning Subject’ and ‘The Learning Environment of Supervision’.Conclusion  The study concludes that supervision in pairs provides unique possibilities for interweaving and developing theory and practice.Implications for nursing management  The supervision model offers unique opportunities for cooperation, for the development of theory and practice and for the development of the professional roll of nurses and teachers.

  • Suffering caused by care - Patients' experiences from hospital settings
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : CoAction Publishing. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 7, s. Article number 18688-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Suffering and well-being are significant aspects of human existence; in particular, suffering and well-being are important aspects of patients’ experiences following diseases. Increased knowledge about existential dimensions of illness and healthcare experiences may be needed in order to improve care and reduce unnecessary suffering. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to illuminate the phenomenon of suffering experienced in relation to healthcare needs among patients in hospital settings in Sweden. In this study, we used a reflective lifeworld approach. The data were analysed with a focus on meanings. The results describe the essential meaning of the phenomenon of suffering in relation to healthcare needs. The patients were suffering during care-giving when they felt distrusted or mistreated and when their perspective on illness and health was overlooked. Suffering was found to arise due to healthcare actions that neglected a holistic and patient-centred approach to care. Unfortunately, healthcare experiences that cause patients to suffer seem to be something one needs to endure without being critical. The phenomenon can be described as having four constituents: to be mistreated; to struggle for one’s healthcare needs and autonomy; to feel powerless; and to feel fragmented and objectified. The study concludes that there are problems associated with patients experiencing suffering at the hands of healthcare providers, even if this suffering may not have been caused deliberately to the patient. Consequently, conscious improvements are needed to lessen the suffering caused by care-giving, as are strategies that promote more patient-centred care and patient participation.

  • Patients' satisfaction with the care offered by advanced practice nurses: a new role in Swedish primary care
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Nursing Practice. - : Wiley. - 1322-7114 .- 1440-172X. ; 19:3, s. 326-333
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to describe patients’ satisfaction with the new role of advanced practice nurses (APNs) in Swedish primary care. A questionnaire pertaining to patient satisfaction with the care offered by APNs was sent to respondents. Descriptive statistics, a chi-squared test and manifest qualitative content analysis were used during analysis. Although the results show an overall high level of patient satisfaction as regards APN-led care, those patients informed of the APN role prior to a consultation were significantly more satisfied. Respondents’ comments indicate that professional treatment and competence are characteristic of the care offered by APNs and also relate the concepts of increased availability of and continuity in health care to the APN role. In order to guarantee the positive development of the APN role in Sweden, continued research is needed from patient, organizational and interprofessional perspectives, including intervention studies of cost effectiveness and the quality of care.

  • Participation and support in intensive care as experienced by close relatives of patients : A phenomenological study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Intensive & Critical Care Nursing. - : Elsevier. - 0964-3397 .- 1532-4036. ; 29:1, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim: The aim of this study was to explore participation and support as experienced by close relatives of patients at an intensive care unit (ICU).Method: This study used the phenomenological approach as developed by Dahlberg et al. (2008) as a method for reflective lifeworld research. Seven close relatives of critically ill patients cared for at an ICU were interviewed. The data were analysed with a focus on meanings. Results: Being allowed to participate in the care of critically ill patients at an ICU is impor-tant for close relatives to the patients. Their experiences can be described as having four constituents: participation in the care of and being close to the patient; confidence in the care the patient receives; support needed for involvement in caregiving; and vulnerability. Conclusion: Participation with and support from health-care professionals are important for the relatives’ well-being and their ability to contribute to the patients’ care. Health-care profes-sionals, especially critical care nurses, need to create an atmosphere that invites relatives to participate in the care provided at an ICU.

  • Two sides of breastfeeding support : experiences of women and midwives
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Breastfeeding Journal. - : BioMed Central. - 1746-4358 .- 1746-4358. ; 5, s. Article number 20-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Midwives’ support of breastfeeding in maternity wards has been proven to provide an impact on women’s breastfeeding experiences. In previous studies women describe professional support unfavourably, with an emphasis on time pressures, lack of availability or guidance, promotion of unhelpful practices, and conflicting advice. Thus, the present study aims to investigate women’s experiences and reflections of receiving breastfeeding support and midwives’ experiences and reflections of giving breastfeeding support. Methods: This study was carried out in a county in southwestern Sweden during 2003-2004. A qualitative method, content analysis, was chosen for the study. The data came from interviews with women as well as interviews with midwives who were experienced in breastfeeding support. Results:  The women’s and midwives’ experiences and reflections of receiving and giving breastfeeding support were conceptualized as one main theme: “Individualized breastfeeding support increases confidence and satisfaction.” This theme contained three categories: “The unique woman,” ”The sensitive confirming process,” and “Consistency of ongoing support.” In order to feel confident in their new motherhood role, the women wanted more confirmation as unique individuals and as breastfeeding women; they wanted to be listened to; and they wanted more time, understanding, and follow-up from health professionals. In contrast, the midwives described themselves as encouraging and confirming of the women’s needs.  Conclusions:  If health care professionals responded to the woman’s unique needs, the woman felt that the breastfeeding support was good and was based on her as an individual, otherwise a feeling of uncertainty emerged. The midwives, however, expressed that they gave the women individual support, but they also expressed that the support came from different points of view, because the midwives interpreted women’s signals differently.

  • Support during labour : first-time fathers' descriptions of requested and received support during the birth of their child
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Midwifery. - : Elsevier. - 0266-6138 .- 1532-3099. ; 27:1, s. 67-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective:  to explore how first-time fathers describe requested and received support during a normal birth. Design:  qualitative research design. Ten first-time fathers were interviewed during the first postpartum week.  Individual  open-ended  interviews  were  used  to  explore  the  fathers’  descriptions,  and  the interviews were analysed using qualitative analysis. Setting:  a labour ward at one hospital in a south-western county of Sweden in November and December 2006. Participants:  first-time  fathers  who  had  experienced  a  normal  birth  at  the  hospital  during  the study period. Findings:  the support described is presented as one main theme, ‘being involved or being left out’, which included four underlying categories: ‘an allowing atmosphere’, ‘balancing involvement’, ‘being seen’ and ‘feeling left out’. Key conclusions:  fathers perceived that they were given good support when they were allowed to ask questions during labour, when they had the opportunity to interact with the midwife and their partner, and when they could choose when to be involved or to step back. Fathers want to be seen as individuals who are part of the labouring couple. If fathers are left out, they tend to feel helpless; this can result in a feeling of panic and can put their supportive role of their partner at risk. Implications  for practice:  the  results  of  this  study could  initiate  discussions  about  how  health-care professionals can develop support given to the labouring couple, with an interest in increasing paternal involvement.

  • Beyond dichotomization : a different way of understanding work integrated Learning
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cooperative Education & Internships. - : CEIA, Cooperative Education & Internship Association. - 1933-2130. ; 44:2, s. 43-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In higher education for professions, there still seems to be an inherent problem regarding how to integrate academic studies with practical training. There are reasons to highlight the problems for students studying to be engineers, teachers, and nurses, for example. This study aims to describe and explain, from a content perspective, how students understand their own studies where Work Integrated Learning is a part of the education, by using qualitative theory and methodology with data from questionnaires and interviews. The conclusion is that higher education, in such meaning. is an arena where best practice meets scientific argumentation, enabling some students to understand their studies from a dichotomized point of view. On the other hand, we also find that students' can develop into skilled professionals by moving beyond the current dichotomization discourse. The fruitful attachment of practical training demonstrates the idea of multiple perspectives and how education inspired by Worked Integrated Learning could constitute an arena in which situations are reflected on and experienced. It is therefore relevant to discuss the issue within an expanding zone of educational content that develops practical skills through concretization, application, identification, and students adopting a critical approach. • The importance of the retailer for an OEM developing innovative products
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Conradi Research Review. - : Vaasa University of Applied Sciences. - 1459-0980. ; 6:2, s. 63-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The supply chain strategy research has generated many frameworks for matching the supply chain with the nature of demand, market, consumers, or products. Recently many companies have implemented innovative new product development processes in order to increase revenue. However, research on the importance of the retailers for an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) adopting a leagile supply chain strategy for innovative products, is scarce. Using the case study method, this research investigates the need of collaboration between an OEM and its retailers. This research aims to richen the knowledge about demand supply chain management (DSCM), and the coordination of demand and supply processes between companies in the demand-supply chain. This research shows that there are several measures that may be used to monitor performance, and that collaboration is important for the case company.
