  • The attraction of the reconstructed past

  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The past twenty years have seen an unprecedented activity of reconstructions of medieval wooden church buildings in the Scandinavian countries. There has been all kind of motivations, ambitions and skills underlying these activities. A few churches are built by the Church of Sweden to host the religious activities of a parish. More common are projects that have been set up as scientific experiments into craft skills, building constructions and timber quality, or have been built for pedagogic purposes in museum settings or in business-driven fun fairs. Yet another category of projects are related to the growing activities related to pilgrimage trails. Common to all of these projects is that they through their combination of reconstructed pastness values and religious attribution – historic or/and contemporary – are expected to attract a lot of attention mostly are part of an intentional destination policy, with different purposes. This paper will give a broad overview of the different kind of projects and analyse expectations as well as underlying needs and desires of the people involved. It will also trace historical roots to contemporary practices to be found both in secular and religious relations to history and pastness in small medieval parish churches.

  • Svenska kyrkans kulturarv Forskningsöversikt 2009-2014
  • 2014
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Religious Space as Cultural Heritage
  • 2019
  • In: Religions. - 2077-1444. ; 10:4, 5, 7, 11
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The settings of religious worship are rapidly transforming. Demographic changes, secularisation, and the attention of heritage institutions affect religious space and objects in various ways in different parts of the world. Some sanctuaries and temples lose their original purpose and are adapted to serve new functions, others stay consecrated but host new religious communities. Heritage tourism at some places thrives and intermingles with the ongoing religious practice. Other sites see declining worship, while sacred objects are turned into museum pieces or commodified and sold as precious antiquities. It is a fact that many Christian communities in Western Europe and large parts of the North-American continent have more church buildings at their disposal than they can either use or maintain. In Asia, the resurrection of the Buddhist temples is driven both by religious communities and by the growing heritage industry. Whether mainly related to religious contents or to cultural heritage, the significance of most places of worship is going through changes that have and will continue to have thorough effects on societal life. These changes and their consequences constitute the focus of this particular issue. The pastness of religious material objects can be determined as significant in two interwoven ways that depart from two likewise interwoven perspectives: internally, by the religious community, as part of a living tradition, and externally, by society, as a secular—scientific or cultural—heritage. The different, at times conflicting interests and motives of these two positions or stakeholders result in frequent interactions and negotiations that involve religious institutions, conservation professionals, tourism managers, and other local, regional, national, and international organisations. This Special Issue aims to address practical, ethical, and theoretical dilemmas related to the use, management, and significance of religious heritage in a comparative and global perspective. We welcome contributions spanning from reflexive case studies to historical and theoretical approaches.

  • Cultural ecosystem services provided by landscapes: Assessment of heritage values and identity
  • 2012
  • In: Ecosystem Services. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-0416. ; 2, s. 14-26
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper aims to provide a conceptual analysis of cultural ecosystem services and how they are linked to the concepts of landscape, heritage and identity. It discusses how these cultural ecosystem services can be assessed and integrated into spatial and physical planning. The paper presents two case studies to shed light on the assessment process. A case study from Sweden combines an analysis of ecosystem services with methods for documenting cultural heritage values in landscapes. A second case study from the Arafura–Timor Seas combines an analysis of cultural ecosystem services with methods for assessment of priority environmental concerns at the seascape scale. We demonstrate that the methods from cultural heritage conservation provide tools for the analysis of historical values as well as historical drivers of change in landscapes that can add time-depth to more spatially focused ecosystem assessments. We propose that methods for valuation of cultural heritage and identity in landscapes are integrated into assessments of ecosystem services to inform policy making and physical and spatial planning for sustainable management of ecosystems and landscapes. This could also provide an approach for bringing about integrated implementation of conventions and instruments from the environmental and cultural heritage fields, respectively.
