  • Value for money and the rule of law : the (new) performance audit in Sweden
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Sector Management. - : Emerald. - 0951-3558 .- 1758-6666. ; 24:2, s. 107-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – This paper aims to develop a classification scheme of different types of value for money(VFM) audits with different degrees of compliance audit, and to classify the performance audits carriedout by the Swedish National Audit Office (SNAO) during its first six years as an independent stateaudit organization reporting to parliament.Design/methodology/approach – The empirical data were gathered from all of the 150 auditreports published by the SNAO from its establishment in 2003 to the end of 2008. Seminars werearranged to discuss the classifications for validation.Findings – The focus on traditional VFM audits (the “Three Es”) is unusual. Most audits carried outby the SNAO combine different types of extended VFM audits with compliance audit. On the onehand, they audit how the government and/or central agencies fulfil their mandates (from good to bad).On the other, they audit how the government and/or central agencies adhere to legislation, rules andpolicies (right or wrong). In some cases, the SNAO equates compliance audit with performance audit.Practical implications – The authors have verbalised and visualised performance audit activities of interest not only to state auditors, but also to external stakeholders. One practical implication is thatthe Swedish national audit committee has conducted an evaluation of the SNAO that is partly based onthe national report of this study, and has proposed a stronger focus on the Three Es.Originality/value – The study addresses a new approach in terms of a classification scheme forperformance audits, consisting of eight types.

  • The Rise of Luxury Brands Online : A study of how a sense of luxury brand is created in an online environment
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Luxury brands have only recently tapped into the online market in an attempt to increase revenues and expand their businesses. This leap onto the online world has resulted in several new challenges, including the luxury brand paradox. The luxury brand paradox concerns the inherent difficulty for luxury brands to increase sales and expand their customer base while simultaneously maintaining an aura of mystery and exclusivity. The openness and accessibility of the Internet are believed to pose an extra challenging environment for luxury brands. This research explores how a sense of luxury brand is created in an online environment. Using methodology comprised of different online methods to comprehend what is taking place online, this study primarily concentrates on visual imagery and online communication. The online world of luxury brands is conceptualized into three distinct categories: brand websites, counterfeit websites and community websites. Using these three categories, the thesis demonstrates what role they each play in the creation of a sense of luxury brand. From this analysis, four themes emerge on the sense of a luxury brand (luxury history, authenticity, community and paradox). The concept of an online fair is used to illustrate the environment of luxury brands on the Internet. The online fair consists of a confluence of people involved in it as well as the various activities they perform. In addition, the fairground where the people participate and the activities that take place are described. In conclusion, this thesis proposes a move from the identity-image construct toward a view of handling and co-creation of sense of brand.

  • Emotional reactions to losing explain gender differences in entering a risky lottery
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Judgment and decision making. - 1930-2975 .- 1930-2975. ; 5:3, s. 159-163
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A gender difference in risk preferences, with women being more averse to risky choices, is a robust experimental finding. Speculating on the sources of this difference, Croson and Gneezy recently pointed to the tendency for women to experience emotions more strongly and suggested that feeling more strongly about negative outcomes would lead to greater risk-aversion. Here we test this hypothesis in an international survey with 424 respondents from India and 416 from US where we ask questions about a hypothetical lottery. In both countries we find that emotions about outcomes are stronger among women, and that this effect partially mediates gender difference in willingness to enter the lottery.

  • An Office on the Go : Professional Workers, Smartphones and the Return of Place
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction. - New York : IGI Publishing. - 1548-3908 .- 1548-3916. ; 7:1, s. 37-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This is a study on how senior managers, as professional workers, in a leading ICT company use smartphones, according to new configurations of time and space. Of special interest is how smartphones act as comforting handheld consoles without being rooted in physical location. Three non-physical places, as spatial nodes, are presented: pause in the temporal current, place as a function of the intensity of communication, place in terms of becoming rooted by felt value. It is argued that highlighting non-physical places as structures emanating from the use of smartphones is an important variable to account for when studying how professionals increasingly use smartphones, both in instrumental and non-instrumental terms.

  • Adapting to local ethical standards: a case of a global company
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business and Globalisation. - : Inderscience publishers. - 1753-3627 .- 1753-3635. ; 7:3, s. 367-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The normative challenges that emerge from a global-local tension, particularly with regard to the supra-legal normativity structures, such as ethical, aesthetical, or creedal, are addressed here. This study investigates a globally operating company that successfully adapted to the local ethical conditions, which contributed to its achievement of business success. Theoretically regarded, it is not clear how the phenomena of globalisation should be conceived. This investigation assumes a novel approach to the conceptual elaboration of globalisation, based upon some selected components from the Cosmonomic philosophy of H. Dooyeweerd. A multi-modal analysis of this case is presented, which uncovers inherent normativity structures governing the involved actors. This in turn provides a rationale for why the alignment between the ethical and economic norms may be congruent and positive. In this way, some initial and tentative proposals are advanced here for an alternative approach to the conception of the phenomena of globalisation.

  • Solutions offerings : a critical review and reconceptualisation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Service Management. - : Emerald. - 1757-5818 .- 1757-5826. ; 21:4, s. 441-459
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – To offer a critical analysis of the literature of solutions offerings; to provide a new conceptual framework, incorporating dimensions that can distinguish between different kinds of solutions, and connect their different characteristics.Design/Methodology/Approach – A critical review of the relevant literature, both 28 contributions identified in a search of three major databases and a range of other published work for the broader perspective, illustrated by real-world examples.Findings – There is no unanimous and rigorous definition of solutions, but rather a number of often broad and generic descriptions that could be applied to a wide array of different offerings, if not generically.Research Limitations/Implications – The sample of subject-specific contributions to the literature may not have been sufficient, and a wider selection of keywords to identify them might have captured a richer variety of concepts and opinions.Originality/Value – This structured and critical review contributes to the literature on services and solutions, by developing a conceptual framework as a basis for future studies and current management strategy.
