    • This study investigated the effect of a repeated and standardized jaw protrusion training (JPT) task on corticomotor excitability as assessed by motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in masseter and tongue muscle with the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Sixteen healthy participants performed three series of a standardized JPT task on three consecutive days. Each day participants performed 41-min of JPT consisting of three series. In all series, participants were instructed to target 50% and 100% of the maximum jaw protrusion positions. In the first and third series without any feedback but during the second series, participants were provided a custom-made mandibular advancement device to help achieve the correct protruded position. Single pulse TMS was applied to elicit MEPs from right masseter, right tongue and right first dorsal interosseous muscles (FDI) (as control), pre and post-task on Day-1 and -3. Masseter MEPs and tongue MEPs were significantly dependent on stimulus intensity (P < 0.001) and on task session (P < 0.001). Amplitude of masseter and tongue MEPs at post-task Day-3 were significantly higher compared to baseline values (pre-task Day-1) (P < 0.005). FDI MEPs were dependent on stimulus intensity only (P < 0.001) but not on task session (P = 0.677). Our novel findings suggest that participants performing an active and repeated JPT task demonstrate neuroplasticity in terms of increased corticomotor excitability not only in masseter muscles but also in tongue muscles. This finding may have implications for patients with obstructive sleep apnea treated by a mandibular advancement device where the lower jaw is passively held in a protruded position.

  • Double-spin asymmetry of electrons from heavy-flavor decays in p plus p collisions at root s=200 GeV

    • We report on the first measurement of the double-spin asymmetry, A(LL), of electrons from the decays of hadrons containing heavy flavor in longitudinally polarized p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV for p(T) = 0.5 to 3.0 GeV/c. The asymmetry was measured at midrapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.35) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measured asymmetries are consistent with zero within the statistical errors. We obtained a constraint for the polarized gluon distribution in the proton of vertical bar Delta g/g(log(10)(x) = -1.6(-0.4)(+0.5), mu = m(T)(c)vertical bar(2) < 0.030 (1 sigma) based on a leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics model, using the measured asymmetry.   • J/psi suppression at forward rapidity in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

    • Heavy quarkonia are observed to be suppressed in relativistic heavy-ion collisions relative to their production in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions. In order to determine if this suppression is related to color screening of these states in the produced medium, one needs to account for other nuclear modifications including those in cold nuclear matter. In this paper, we present new measurements from the PHENIX 2007 data set of J/psi yields at forward rapidity (1.2 < vertical bar y vertical bar < 2.2) in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The data confirm the earlier finding that the suppression of J/. at forward rapidity is stronger than at midrapidity, while also extending the measurement to finer bins in collision centrality and higher transverse momentum (p(T)). We compare the experimental data to the most recent theoretical calculations that incorporate a variety of physics mechanisms including gluon saturation, gluon shadowing, initial-state parton energy loss, cold nuclear matter breakup, color screening, and charm recombination. We find J/psi suppression beyond cold-nuclear-matter effects. However, the current level of disagreement between models and d + Au data precludes using these models to quantify the hot-nuclear-matter suppression.

  • Lévy-stable two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations in s NN =200 GeV Au+Au collisions

    • We present a detailed measurement of charged two-pion correlation functions in 0-30% centrality sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data are well described by Bose-Einstein correlation functions stemming from Lévy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extract the correlation strength parameter λ, the Lévy index of stability α, and the Lévy length scale parameter R as a function of average transverse mass of the pair mT. We find that the positively and the negatively charged pion pairs yield consistent results, and their correlation functions are represented, within uncertainties, by the same Lévy-stable source functions. The λ(mT) measurements indicate a decrease of the strength of the correlations at low mT. The Lévy length scale parameter R(mT) decreases with increasing mT, following a hydrodynamically predicted type of scaling behavior. The values of the Lévy index of stability α are found to be significantly lower than the Gaussian case of α=2, but also significantly larger than the conjectured value that may characterize the critical point of a second-order quark-hadron phase transition. © 2018 American Physical Society.

    • INTRODUCTION: Since 2005, disease-related human genetic diversity has been intensively characterized using genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Understanding how and by whom this work was performed may yield valuable insights into the generalizability of GWAS discoveries to global populations and how high-impact genetics research can be equitably sustained in the future.MATERIALS AND METHODS: We mined the NHGRI-EBI GWAS Catalog (2005-2022) for the most burdensome non-communicable causes of death worldwide. We then compared: i) the geographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic characteristics of study populations, ii) the geographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the regions within which researchers were located, and iii) the extent to which male and female investigators undertook and led the research.RESULTS: The research institutions leading the work are often US-based (37%), while the origin of samples is more diverse, with the Nordic countries having contributed as much data to GWAS as the USA (~17% of data). The majority of first (60%), senior (75%) and all (66%) authors are male; although proportions vary by disease and leadership level, male coauthors are the ubiquitous majority. The vast majority (92%) of complex trait GWAS has been performed in European ancestry populations, with cohorts and scientists predominantly located in medium-to-high socioeconomically ranked countries; apart from East Asians (~5%), other ethnicities rarely feature in published GWAS.CONCLUSION: Most GWAS cohorts are of European ancestry residing outside the US, with a smaller yet meaningful proportion of East Asian ancestry. Papers describing GWAS research are predominantly authored by male scientists based in medium-to-high income countries.

  • Nuclear Modification of psi ', chi(c), and J/psi Production in d plus Au Collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

    • We present results for three charmonia states (psi' chi(c), and J/ psi) in d + Au collisions at vertical bar y vertical bar < 0.35 and root s(NN) = 200 GeV. We find that the modification of the psi' yield relative to that of the J/ psi scales approximately with charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity across p + A, d + Au, and A + A results from the Super Proton Synchrotron and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In large-impact-parameter collisions we observe a similar suppression for the psi' and J/ psi, while in small-impact-parameter collisions the more weakly bound psi' is more strongly suppressed. Owing to the short time spent traversing the Au nucleus, the larger psi' suppression in central events is not explained by an increase of the nuclear absorption owing to meson formation time effects.

  • Cold-Nuclear-Matter Effects on Heavy-Quark Production in d+Au Collisions at root S-NN=200 GeV

    • The PHENIX experiment has measured electrons and positrons at midrapidity from the decays of hadrons containing charm and bottom quarks produced in d + Au and p + p collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV in the transverse-momentum range 0.85 <= p(T)(e) <= 8.5 GeV/c. In central d + Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor R-dA at 1.5 < p(T) < 5 GeV/c displays evidence of enhancement of these electrons, relative to those produced in p + p collisions, and shows that the mass-dependent Cronin enhancement observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider extends to the heavy D meson family. A comparison with the neutral-pion data suggests that the difference in cold-nuclear-matter effects on light- and heavy-flavor mesons could contribute to the observed differences between the pi(0) and heavy-flavor-electron nuclear modification factors R-AA.     • Serum lipoproteins and apolipoproteins were followed in 34 children during a period of 5 years from the onset of diabetes. The group did not differ in these respects from a healthy control group after 5 years of disease. The variation in serum triglycerides and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) triglycerides was more pronounced, some patients having high values. Serum triglycerides and VLDL lipids were significantly correlated to subcutaneous fat, measured as triceps and subscapular skinfolds. None of the patients had albuminuria, so lipid levels could not be related to renal albumin excretion. There was no significant correlation between any serum lipid and haemoglobin A1c.

    • The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has performed systematic measurements of phi meson production in the K+K- decay channel at midrapidity in p + p, d + Au, Cu + Cu, and Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. Results are presented on the phi invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor R-AA for Au + Au and Cu + Cu, and R-dA for d + Au collisions, studied as a function of transverse momentum (1 < p(T) < 7 GeV/c) and centrality. In central and midcentral Au + Au collisions, the R-AA of phi exhibits a suppression relative to expectations from binary scaled p + p results. The amount of suppression is smaller than that of the pi(0) and the. in the intermediate p(T) range (2-5 GeV/c), whereas, at higher p(T), the phi, pi(0), and. show similar suppression. The baryon (proton and antiproton) excess observed in central Au + Au collisions at intermediate p(T) is not observed for the phi meson despite the similar masses of the proton and the phi. This suggests that the excess is linked to the number of valence quarks in the hadron rather than its mass. The difference gradually disappears with decreasing centrality, and, for peripheral collisions, the R-AA values for both particle species are consistent with binary scaling. Cu + Cu collisions show the same yield and suppression as Au + Au collisions for the same number of N-part. The R-dA of phi shows no evidence for cold nuclear effects within uncertainties.

  • INVESTMENT MEMO ABOWE PILOT B SWEDEN

    • This report is one output of ABOWE project (Implementing Advanced Concepts for Biological Utilization of Waste), which belongs to EU Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013. ABOWE works with two promising technologies to unlock investments. Two mobile pilot plants have been built and will be tested in several Baltic Sea regions. These pilots are based on a novel biorefinery concept from Finnoflag Oy, Finland, known as Pilot A as well as a German dry fermentation process, known as Pilot B. The pilots form the basis for compilation of Investment Memos and organizing Investor Events. Also a regional model is used to evaluate the new processes’ economic and climatic impacts in each region. The desired outcome from ABOWE is implementer/investor driven continuation projects targeting full-scaleplant investments of the two technologies.The purpose of ABOWE Work Package 2 is to gather and communicate information from many aspects of technologies which are piloted with Pilot A and Pilot B to support investment decisions for full scale plants. In practice, a demo full scaleplant would be needed in order to convince the commercial investors and implementers to full scale plants. This means that ABOWE provides with profound information and a step forward regarding the two technologies. After ABOWE, the technology will need development for full-scale, and the feasibility will need further analysis. An implementer and investor should be found to conduct development further towards full-scale demo plant.
