  • Uptake and use of digital technologies in primary and secondary schools : a thematic review of research
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Digital Literacy. - Oslo : Universitetsforlaget. - 1891-943X. ; 10:4, s. 103-121
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is a review of international research on the uptake and use of digital technologies in primary and secondary schools. The aim was to provide a credible and clear picture of current research, together with some wellinformed suggestions as to how future research could develop. Two strategies were used: (1) identify themes within current research that indicate important lessons to be learned in relation to the uptake and use of digital technologies in primary and secondary schools, and (2) based on these lessons, identify which knowledge-gaps need to be closed and in the light of this suggest directions for further research. It is concluded that a rather complex and fragmented picture of the uptake and use of digital technologies emerges from the literature review. Three specific suggestions for research on the uptake and use of digital technologies in primary and secondary school are provided: (1) the outcomes of technology use in relation to different levels in the educational system, e.g. arenas of implementation and realization, (2) digital practices that are longitudinal and information-rich and that go beyond existing knowledge, and (3) initiatives for a renewal of theoretical and mmethodological approaches when designing and analyzing studies within the field.

  • Reinventing the wheel? Factors influencing relationship : links between sustainability and financial performance. European evidence
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Accounting and Information Management. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1834-7649 .- 1758-9037. ; 32:1, s. 147-177
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: This study aims to examine the factors that influence the relationship between sustainability and financial performance (FP) of the European listed companies.Design/methodology/approach: This study analyzed data from 795 companies in 21 European countries by applying linear mixed-effects multilevel regressions, a two steps system generalized method of moments and quantile regression models to uncover the links between sustainability and FP.Findings: The past four decades have witnessed abundant research to determine the relationship between corporate sustainability and FP. Thus, conducting further research in 2023 could be seen as “reinventing the wheel.” Yet, earlier research considered firms as isolated entities with sustainability and FP being dependent only on that firm’s actions. By contrast, with the help of network governance theory, this study shows that a firm’s sustainability and FP depend on an interplay among interorganizational actors, such as institutional qualities, macroeconomic factors and an embrace of sustainability. Here, large firms play an essential role. Three significant findings are drawn. First, sustainability performance has a significant impact on FP in the European context. Second, the institutional quality (IQ) of the rule of law and control of corruption plays a crucial role in enhancing sustainability and FP, and finally the interaction of IQ and economic growth helps to increase companies’ market value (Tobin’s Q). The consistent and empirically robust findings offer key lessons to policymakers and practitioners on the interplay among multiple actors in corporate sustainability and FP.Practical implications: A synergetic multifaced relationship between governmental institutions and corporations is inevitable for ensuring sustainable development. The degree of intimacy in the relationship, of course, will be determined by the macroeconomic environment.Originality/value: In this research, this study theoretically and empirically identified that corporate sustainability and FP are not solely dependent on corporate operation. Rather, it is transformed, modified and shaped through an interaction of multiple actors’ trajectories in the macro business environment.

  • Assessment of renovation measures for a dwelling area : impacts on energy efficiency and building certification
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Building and Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0360-1323 .- 1873-684X. ; 97, s. 26-33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The European Union has an ambitious plan to reduce energy use and emissions by the year 2030. The building and real estate sectors have a great potential to help reduce emissions by energy efficiency. However, different energy sources and environmental standards affect the decision making of these major renovations in the existing stock. This study investigates how different renovation strategies affect the energy rating of a selected Building Environmental Assessment Tool and analyses the consequences in terms of greenhouse gas emissions for the local district heating system. Both building energy simulations and energy systems cost optimization were used to determine the energy use and local emissions. The results of different renovation scenarios were used to evaluate the rating in the selected tool and the impact in the district heating local emissions. The used methodology illustrates how energy efficient renovation impacts on the district heating system’s local emissions. However, a bias towards resource classification within the Swedish Building Environmental Tool, Miljöbyggnad, needs to be addressed in order to assess the impact of local emissions. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

  • Combined environmental and economic assessment of energy efficiency measures in a multi-dwelling building
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073. ; 12:13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to assess how different renovation scenarios affect the environmental and economic impacts of a multi-dwelling building in a Nordic climate, how these aspects are correlated and how different energy carriers affect different environmental impact categories. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the European Union has set an agenda in order to reduce energy use in buildings. New buildings on the European market have a low replacement rate, which makes building renovation an important factor for achieving the European Union goals. In this study, eight renovation strategies were analyzed following the European Committee for Standardization standards for life cycle assessment and life cycle costs of buildings. This study covers all life cycle steps from cradle to grave. The renovation scenarios include combinations of photovoltaics, geothermal heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation and improved building envelopes. Results show that, depending on the energy carrier, reductions in global warming potential can be achieved at the expense of an increased nuclear waste disposal. It also shows that for the investigated renovation strategies in Sweden there is no correlation between the economic and the environmental performance of the building. Changing energy carriers in Sweden in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions can be a good alternative, but it makes the system more dependent on nuclear power.

  • Environmental payback of renovation strategies in a northern climate - the impact of nuclear power and fossil fuels in the electricity supply
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to assess how the use of fossil and nuclear power in different renovation scenarios affects the environmental impacts of a multi-family dwelling in Sweden, and how changes in the electricity production with different energy carriers affect the environmental impact. In line with the Paris Agreement, the European Union has set an agenda to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by means of energy efficiency in buildings. It is estimated that by the year 2050, 80% of Europe's population will be living in buildings that already exist. This means it is important for the European Union to renovate buildings to improve energy efficiency. In this study, eight renovation scenarios, using six different Northern European electricity mixes, were analyzed using the standard of the European Committee for Standardization for life cycle assessment of buildings. This study covers all life cycle steps from cradle to grave. The renovation scenarios include combinations of photovoltaics, geothermal heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation, and improvement of the building envelope. The results show that while in some electricity mixes a reduction in the global warming potential can be achieved, it can be at the expense of an increase in radioactive waste production, and, in mixes with a high share of fossil fuels, the global warming potential of the scenarios increases with time, compared with that of the original building. It also shows that in most electricity mixes, scenarios that reduce the active heat demand of the building end up in reducing both the global warming potential and radioactive waste, making them less sensitive to changes in the energy system.

  • Life Cycle Assessment of Building Renovation Measures : Trade-off between Building Materials and Energy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI. - 1996-1073. ; 12:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The scope of this study is to assess how different energy efficient renovation strategies affect the environmental impacts of a multi-family house in a Nordic climate within district heating systems. The European Union has set ambitious targets to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030. There is special attention on reducing the life cycle emissions in the buildings sector. However, the focus has often been on new buildings, although existing buildings represent great potential within the building stock in Europe. In this study, four different renovation scenarios were analyzed with the commercially available life cycle assessment software that follows the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) standard. This study covers all life cycle steps from the cradle to the grave for a residential building in Borlange, Sweden, where renewable energy dominates. The four scenarios included reduced indoor temperature, improved thermal properties of building material components and heat recovery for the ventilation system. One finding is that changing installations gives an environmental impact comparable to renovations that include both ventilation and building facilities. In addition, the life cycle steps that have the greatest environmental impact in all scenarios are the operational energy use and the building and installation processes. Renovation measures had a major impact on energy use due to the cold climate and low solar irradiation in the heating season. An interesting aspect, however, is that the building materials and the construction processes gave a significant amount of environmental impact.

  • Long-term adaptation to neck/shoulder pain and perceptual performance in a hand laterality motor imagery test
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Perception. - : Sage Publications. - 0301-0066 .- 1468-4233. ; 39:1, s. 119-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of neck/shoulder pain on the performance in a hand laterality motor imagery test was studied. Responses to the Cooper and Shepard (1975, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance 104 48–56) hand laterality test were explored in twenty-four individuals with chronic non-specific neck pain and twenty-one subjects with chronic neck pain of traumatic origin (whiplash-associated disorder). Twenty-two controls were also included in the study. Digitalised right- or left-hand stimuli were presented at five different stimulus angles (0°, 45° laterally, 90° laterally, 135° laterally, and 180°). The experimental task was to decide the laterality as fast and accurately as possible. The performance, both reaction time (RT) and accuracy, of the two experimental groups was contrasted with that of the control group. The main results revealed that the subjects afflicted with whiplash injury on the average exhibited a faster response pattern than symptom-free healthy controls. Despite their musculoskeletal deficits and experience of pain these volunteers also exhibited a preserved speed–accuracy tradeoff. Longer duration of time with symptoms of neck pain was, moreover, associated with progressively faster RTs. These results point to perceptual learning and may reflect different stages of adaptation to neck pain.

  • Cancer genetic counselees' self-reported psychological distress, changes in life, and adherence to recommended surveillance programs 3-7 years post counseling
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Genetic Counseling. - : Wiley. - 1059-7700 .- 1573-3599. ; 18:2, s. 185-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to investigate psychological distress, changes in life, adherence to surveillance programs and satisfaction with cancer genetic counseling based on Swedish participants' self-reported data. A total of 218 probands (72% response rate) affected by breast, breast/ovarian or colorectal cancer and/or a family history of cancer were surveyed 3-7 years after receiving cancer genetic counseling. Participants reported a relatively high level of anxiety and a low level of depression. Probands affected by colorectal cancer reported a higher level of depression than did non-affected individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer. Overall, the participants reported moderate changes in family relations, priorities and appreciation of daily life activities. The majority of at-risk probands reportedly adhered to recommended surveillance programs. The mean level of satisfaction with cancer genetic counseling was high. About half of the participants would have accepted additional counseling sessions, contact with a psychologist or further help concerning informing family members. The present results indicate no adverse effects of genetic counseling, but they do suggest that typical counseling procedures could be improved by provision of additional psychosocial support.

  • Does enhanced information at cancer genetic counseling improve counselees' knowledge, risk perception, satisfaction and negotiation of information to at-risk relatives? : a randomized study
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Acta Oncologica. - : Informa Healthcare. - 0284-186X .- 1651-226X. ; 48:7, s. 999-1009
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: The aim of the present randomized intervention study was to investigate the effect of receiving extended cancer genetic information on counselees' knowledge, risk perception, information sharing and satisfaction with the service.METHODS: In total, 147 counselees, affected by cancer and/or a family history of cancer, were randomized to extended or standard information. The levels of counselees' knowledge and personal risk estimations were measured at four time points. In addition, counselees' satisfaction with the counseling and sharing of the information to at-risk relatives was assessed. The intervention included meeting a specialist nurse, learning the breaking bad news method, receiving written material and video-taped counseling sessions.RESULTS: A significant increase in the level of knowledge in participants in the "breast cancer group" regardless of the randomization was observed over time. The correct estimation of personal risk increased significantly in both groups after two weeks, but declined at the eight month follow-up. Most of the participants had informed at-risk relatives about their visit at the cancer genetic clinic. The majority of respondents in both groups were highly satisfied with the counseling. The only observed effects of the intervention were that counselees in the intervention group were significantly more satisfied with the content of the given information and with the way of informing relatives.CONCLUSION: Apparently, the current genetic counseling is managed properly and extended information does not seem necessary in all cases. However, some counselees need additional sessions.

  • The slow and fast components of postural sway in chronic neck pain
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Manual Therapy. - : Elsevier BV. - 1356-689X .- 1532-2769. ; 16:3, s. 273-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To evaluate the slow and fast components of postural control in quiet stance in subjects with chronic neck pain, associations between postural sway and self-rated characteristics and to study the impact of anthropometrics on postural sway.Design: A single-blinded cross-sectional study including two separate data collections.Subjects: Sample 1: Persons with chronic non-specific neck pain (NS, n=24), whiplash associated disorders (WAD, n=21). Healthy subjects were controls (CON, n=21). Sample 2: Women only, 98 NS and 32 CON subjects. Methods: Subject performed a quiet stance test with eyes closed on a force platform while the center of pressure (CoP) trajectory was measured. Sample 1 was tested on a firm surface for 30 seconds, while sample 2 was tested on both firm and foam surfaces for 190 seconds. The CoP signal was decomposed into the slow and fast components and the magnitude of these signals were calculated. Anthropometrics were included as covariate in the analysis of group differences if correlated with postural sway variables. Group differences in the sway variables were evaluated, as well as association between postural sway and self-ratings of symptoms, functioning and kinesiophobia. Results: Increased magnitude of the slow sway component was found for both neck pain groups. Increasing age was associated with increased magnitude of the fast component. Surface conditions had no effect on group difference. For WAD, associations were found between the magnitude of the slow component and self-rated characteristics related to physical functioning, sensory alterations and psychosocial functioning. For NS, concurrent low back pain was associated with increased postural sway. Conclusion: Postural control can be altered in chronic neck pain. This effect was present only for the slow sway component, which implies aberration in sensory feedback or processing of sensory information. Associations between postural sway and self-rated characteristics in WAD support the clinical validity of postural control assessment in this group. Increased postural sway found in NS with concurrent low back pain suggests an important role of generalised spinal pain on postural control alterations.
