Individual Perceptions of Boundary Control Mitigate the Effect of (in) Congruence Between Workers’ Preferred Work/Non-Work Boundaries and their Enacted Boundary Management on Work-Life Conflict

- Purpose: Rapid development of boundary-transcending ICTs have led to more flexible forms of work organization, marking a fundamental shift in the flexibility and permeability of employees’ work-nonwork boundaries. This study investigates the inter-relationships between employees’ boundary management types, representing boundary (in)congruence between their preferred and enacted boundary management, and work-life conflict, and the potential moderating role of perceived boundary control herein.Design/Methodology: Data comprised 3,154 Swedish professional workers in different occupations within both the public and private sector. Correlations, t-tests, Chi square tests and univariate general linear model analyses (ANCOVA) were performed.Findings: Enacted integration as well as boundary incongruence were both positively associated with work-life-conflict. Moreover, incongruence accompanied by a high degree of enacted integration increased work-life conflict. Finally, boundary control mitigated work-life conflict. This was especially the case among employees preferring segmentation but enacting integration, i.e., boundary incongruence, but also among employees both preferring and enacting integration, i.e., boundary congruence.Practical implications: This study provides new and valuable knowledge on different boundary management types, reflecting boundary (in)congruence, that are associated with increased work-life conflict depending on the specific type of (in)congruence in question, and the role of boundary control herein as an important factor to combat work-life conflict. This kind of knowledge is of high relevance in contemporary working life characterized by an ever-increased blurring of work-nonwork boundaries. Organizations play an important role in creating new legitimate beliefs and as such, leisure norms could be implemented that promote employees’ boundary control, and subsequent reduced work-life conflict.

Vägar tillbaka : En uppföljningsstudie av psykologiska och praktiska förutsättningar för återgång i arbete efter långtidssjukskrivning med stöd av en arbetsgivarring

- Föreliggande rapport utgör andra delen i en studie av 20 långtidssjukskrivna och deras försök att inom ramen för en arbetsgivarring komma tillbaka till arbetslivet. Fokus i den första rapporten låg på en beskrivning av individens arbetshistoria samt upplevda hinder och vändpunkter på vägen mot en ny arbets- och livssituation. I föreliggande studie var syftet att utifrån ett individperspektiv identifiera och analysera individuella förhållningssätt och yttre förutsättningar för arbetsbyten bland de långtidssjukskrivna. I studien ingick 20 personer som under hösten 2004 påbörjat ett samarbete med vägledare vid en arbetsgivarring i Stockholm. Uppföljningsstudien genomfördes vårvintern 2006 och bygger på intervjuer med 19 individer. Resultaten visade att sammanlagt nio av dessa hade kommit ur sin sjukskrivning och helt eller delvis övergått till nya arbetsuppgifter hos den gamla arbetsgivaren, helt ny arbetsplats/yrke eller till studier. I analyserna framträdde betydelsen av psykologiska aspekter såsom trygghet, stöd och självkänsla, men inte oväntat fann vi att återgång också på ett påtagligt sätt hör samman med praktiska förutsättningar i termer av adekvat sjukvård och behandling, ekonomiska förutsättningar, möjligheter till omskolning, väglednings- och arbetsförmedlingstjänster. Det återfanns även ett tydligt samspel mellan dessa praktiska förutsättningar och individens psykiska välbefinnande och förmåga att själv agera för att ta sig ur långtidssjukskrivningen. Studiens resultat visar på behovet av att utveckla en sammanfattande psykologisk teori om processen tillbaka till arbetslivet efter en lång sjukskrivning där individrelaterade begrepp som stöd, trygghet, självkänsla och självförtroende, ansvarsfördelning och strategier är byggstenar, men där också institutionsrelaterade begrepp behöver formuleras och ingå.

- Today indeed MNEs are relying on the knowledge of many countries around the globe. Considering this, many MNEs fine-slice their value chain even R&D activities and send them across different subsidiaries [1, 2]. Although international R&D is not a new phenomenon [3] but interestingly, there is little evidence on how R&D mandate gain of the subsidiary increases the likelihood of subsidiary innovation. In this study, we explain the strategic boundary spanning activities of subsidiary’s managers ex-post gaining an R&D mandate on strategic learning of the subsidiary to explain the effects of these activities and capability enhancements on the subsidiary’s innovation. This research contributes to the existing literature by studying the effects of subsidiary managers’ different activities on subsidiary innovation. Additionally, this study enables the HQs’ executives to foresee the innovation potential of a subsidiary and at the same time gives the subsidiary’s managers, the ability to maximize innovations by designing an appropriate strategy within their internal and external environments during the change period.

Mathematical Analysis of Forced Convective Flow Due to Stretching Sheet and Instabilities of Natural Convective Flow

- The investigations presented in the thesis are theoretical studies of magnetohydrodynamic flows, heat and mass transfer in Newtonian/non-Newtonian cooling liquids, due to horizontal/vertical stretching sheet. The theoretical studies include the effect of magnetic field, uniform and non-uniform heat source/sink (flow and temperature dependent heat source/sink) effects. The considered problems include flow of viscous fluids in the presence of applied magnetic field and electric field with first order chemical reactions. The viscous incompressible Newtonian fluid flow in porous medium with Darcy-Forchheimmer model, electrically conducting fluid and nanofluid is studied. We introduce innovative techniques for finding solutions of highly nonlinear coupled boundary value problems such as Runge-Kutta method, Perturbation method and Differential Transform Method (DTM). Chapter 1-2 gives a brief introduction. Chapter 3 focuses on Lie group analysis of MHD flow and heat transfer over a stretching sheet. The effects of viscous dissipation, uniform heat source/sink and MHD on heat transfer are addressed. In Chapter 4-6 we examined the laminar flow, thermocapillary flow of a nanoliquid thin film over an unsteady stretching sheet in presence of MHD and thermal Radiation in different situations. An effective medium theory (EMT) based model is used for the thermal conductivity of the nanoliquid. Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are considered in carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) - water base liquid. In Chapter 7-9 we analyzed, heat and mass transfer in MHD, mixed convection, viscoelastic fluid flow, non-Darcian flow due to stretching sheet in presence of viscous dissipation, non-uniform heat source/sink and porous media have been investigated in different situations. MHD and viscous dissipation have a significant influence on controlling of the dynamics. In Chapter 10 the linear stability of Maxwell fluid-nanofluid flow in a saturated porous layer is examined theoretically when the walls of the porous layers are subjected to time-periodic temperature modulations. A modified Darcy-Maxwell model is used to describe the fluid motion, and the nanofluid model used includes the effects of the Brownian motion. The thermal conductivity and viscosity are considered to be dependent on the nanoparticle volume fraction.In Chapter 11 we studied MHD flow in a vertical double passage channel taking into account the presence of the first order chemical reactions. The governing equations are solved by using a regular perturbation technique valid for small values of the Brinkman number and a DTM valid for all values of the Brinkman number.
