  • Pilot-scale investigation of Pt/alumina catalysts deactivation by organosilicon in the total oxidation of hydrocarbons
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Topics in Catalysis. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-9028 .- 1022-5528. ; 45:1-4, s. 121-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The deactivation of alumina-supported platinum catalyst for VOC oxidation by long-term exposure for hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDS) has been investigated in a pilot scale reactor for up to 1000 h of exposure. Catalyst samples were characterized by ICP-AES, BET and silicon deposition by SEM. Catalyst activity was investigated using oxidation of ethyl acetate showing deactivation of the catalyst samples as exposed to HMDS increasing with exposure time. Silicon was shown to deposit on the catalyst as well as on the blank alumina support. SEM investigation of an individual pellet revealed a radial eggshell silicon distribution. CO chemisorption showed strong decrease of Pt active sites after deactivation, while still maintaining reasonable oxidation levels of ethyl acetate.

  • Catalytic properties of oxide nanoparticles applied in gas sensors
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Topics in Catalysis. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-9028 .- 1022-5528. ; 45:1-4, s. 105-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of gas sensing layers based on indium oxide doped with gold were prepared by using the aerosol technology for deposition as the active contact layer in a metal oxide semiconductor capacitive device. The interaction between the measured species and the insulator surface was quantified as the voltage changes at a constant capacitance of the device. The sensor properties were investigated in the presence of H2, CO, NH3, NO, NO2 and C3H6 at temperatures between 100–400 °C. Significant differences in the morphology of the layer and its sensitivity were noted for different preparation methods and different gas environments.

  • An Examination of the Robustness of the Vector Autoregressive Granger-Causality Test in the Presence of GARCH and Variance Shifts
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Review of Business Research Papers. ; 3:6, s. 280-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The properties of the Granger-causality test in stationary and stable Vector Autoregressive (VAR) models are studied with different types of volatility processes imposed on the unconditional variance. For this test, it is examined how the size and power properties are affected by different magnitudes of GARCH processes and by structural shifts in the volatility. The study has been conducted by means of Monte Carlo simulations for different sample sizes. Our analysis reveals that substantial GARCH effects influence the size properties of the Granger-causality test, especially in small samples. The power functions of the test are usually slightly lower in the presence of GARCH disturbances compared to the case of white noise residuals. When a structural variance break is imposed, the size problem is rather severe, and the power functions are lower compared to the case with the pure GARCH processes.

  • The Robustness of the RESET Test to Non-Normal Error Terms
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Computational Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0927-7099 .- 1572-9974. ; 30:4, s. 393-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In systems ranging from 1 to 10 equations, the size and power of various generalization of the Regression Specification Error Test (RESET) test for functional misspecification are investigated, using both the assymptotic and the bootsrap critical values. Furthermore, the robusteness of the RESET test to various numbers of non-normal error terms has been investigated. The properties of eight versions of the test are studied using Monte Carlo methods. Using the assyptotic critical values together with normally distributed error terms,we find theRao’smultivariate F-test to be best among all other alternative testmethods (i.e.Wald, Lagrange Multiplier and Likelihood Ratio). In the cases of heavy tailed error terms, short or long tailed errors, however, the properties of the bestRao test deteriorates especially in larg systems of equations.By using the bootstrap critical values, we find that the Rao test exhibits correct size but still slightlyunder reject the null hypothesis in cases when the error terms are short tailed. The powerof the test is low, however, in small samples and when the number of equations grows.

  • Inside the Guru's Gate : Ritual Uses of Texts among the Sikhs in Varanasi
  • 2007
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Summary: For religious Sikhs, the Guru Granth Sahib is a holy scripture which enshrines ontologically divine words and the teaching and revelatory experiences of historical human Gurus. Simultaneously the Sikhs have taken the concept of a sacred scripture much further than any other religious community by treating the Guru Granth Sahib as a living Guru invested with spiritual authority and agency to guide humans and establish relationships to the divine. Wherever the Sikhs have settled in the world today the scripture is staged at the center of their congregational life. The Sikh place of worship - a gurdwara or the Guru's gate - is by definition a space in which Guru Granth Sahib is made present to run a daily court. The scripture is installed daily on an elevated throne like a royal sovereign who/which admits worshippers and at nightfall ceremonially taken to a special bedroom for rest. In religious services the Sikhs daily recite and sing hymns of the scripture and explore its semantic inner for guidance in their social life. Considering the significations of Guru Granth Sahib, as a living Guru of the Sikhs, it is surprising that scholars have paid considerably little attention to religious attitudes, behaviors and acts surrounding the physical scripture and the living performance traditions of orally rendering and exploring its content. "Inside the Guru's Gate: Ritual Uses of Texts among the Sikhs in Varanasi" aims to direct the focus towards a deeper understanding of contemporary religious worship and oral performance traditions in Sikhism. Based on field work in a Sikh congregation at Varanasi (Northern India), the study investigates how local Sikhs perceive, use and interact with the Guru Granth Sahib and other religious texts accredited gurbani status, i.e. words being uttered by their human Gurus, through a wide spectrum of practices. From the perspective of ritual and anthropological theories, the study analyzes the discursive and ritual means by which local Sikhs create and confirm conceptions of the Guru's presence and agency in the world. Local discourses on the Guru Granth Sahib situate the scripture in a web of relationships - onto-theological relationships to the invisible divine, historical relationships to the human Gurus, and social relationships to contemporary disciples - that legitimize both its worldly and otherworldly identity and power. By arranging spaces and enacting ritual acts in the gurdwara, the Sikhs enmesh the Guru Granth Sahib in daily routines and stage the scripture as a worldly sovereign with capacity to provide spiritual guidance, transmit the divine revelation it enshrines, and make it possible for devotees to gain spiritual knowledge and experiences. Since Guru Granth Sahib belongs to a succession line of human Gurus it has inherited anthropomorphic habits and even has its own life-cycle rituals that mark important events and stages in the worldly life of the text. The study argues that ritual uses of the Guru Granth Sahib and the living performance traditions of mediating the scriptural words are the means by which the Sikhs personify and bring the scripture to life, as an agentive Guru, and make its teaching perpetually alive and relevant to changing contexts in a human and socially conditioned world. To develop and sustain a devotional and didactical relationship, even a social relationship, to the scripture is what makes people Sikhs - disciples of the Guru.

  • Om social sårbarhet i samband med extraordinära händelser : En intervjustudie i 12 kommuner
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this report is to study how the authorities in twelve Swedish municipalities consider social vulnerability in disasters. The study is based on telephone interviews with ten officials responsible for safety and risk analysis and with ten officials responsible for social and psychological support after disasters. Three group interviews about the support for affected citizens after the storm Gudrun in southern Sweden in 2005, the Asian tsunami in 2004 and an accident with toxic gas in 2005 were conducted with municipal officials. The municipalities represent different kinds of cities and villages in Sweden. The measures in the municipalities were performed with expert knowledge to keep the legitimacy of the municipal authorities. In some municipalities the support was performed with empowerment and was adjusted to the needs of the affected. The officials considered elderly and other people who already have care or nursing, immigrants and those without social network, as socially vulnerable. None of the respondents mentioned homeless people, tourists or illegal immigrants. These groups are often mentioned in international research. Some of the respondents discussed how far the responsibility of the municipal authorities should extend. They also discussed how much responsibility citizens living in the countryside should have for their own safety for example in case of power failure. The question ought to bring up for public and political discussion. Another question is whether the authorities or the affected have the right to define social vulnerability.

  • Sårbar men inte ensam : en studie av några drabbades erfarenheter av Kemiraolyckan, tsunamin och stormen Gudrun
  • 2007
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this report is to illustrate how the affected after disasters have experienced their situation and the support from authorities. The study is based on interviews with 16 persons after the storm Gudrun in southern Sweden 2005, the Asian tsunami 2004 and an accident with toxic gas in a Swedish town 2005. The affected received most support, both practical and emotional, from their social networks. Conditions for that kind of support is the emotional energy and solidarity (Collins 2004) created in the network before the disaster. The affected after the toxic gas accident had a great need for information about the disaster. Most vulnerable were those who already were in need of care. After the tsunami the relatives in Sweden needed information and emotional support. They received support from their social network and the municipality crisis support. Some of them asked for support in dealing with meaning of grief and death. Their vulnerability is not so much social but existential about the great questions in human life. They also mentioned the differences between women and men. Men did not always share their emotional experiences in the counseling or in group discussions. The affected after the tsunami were offered counseling immediately but they had need for that kind of service even several months after the disaster. After the storm Gudrun people living in the countryside were affected by trouble in the infrastructure. They also lost forest, and their situation is characterized as economic vulnerability. After the storm the affected were able, for example, to do efforts to make the ways open again. They also could go and see elderly people living alone far away in the forests before the authorities could. Therefore, the municipality authorities have started a discussion how to cooperate with the farmer’s organisation in case of disasters.
