  • Correlations between flow and transverse momentum in Xe+Xe and Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC with the ATLAS detector : A probe of the heavy-ion initial state and nuclear deformation

    • The correlations between flow harmonics vn for n=2, 3, and 4 and mean transverse momentum [pT] in 129Xe+129Xe and 208Pb+208Pb collisions at √s=5.44 and 5.02 TeV, respectively, are measured using charged particles with the ATLAS detector. The correlations are potentially sensitive to the shape and size of the initial geometry, nuclear deformation, and initial momentum anisotropy. The effects from nonflow and centrality fluctuations are minimized, respectively, via a subevent cumulant method and an event-activity selection based on particle production at very forward rapidity. The vn−[pT] correlations show strong dependencies on centrality, harmonic number n, pT, and pseudorapidity range. Current models qualitatively describe the overall centrality- and system-dependent trends but fail to quantitatively reproduce all features of the data. In central collisions, where models generally show good agreement, the v2−[pT] correlations are sensitive to the triaxiality of the quadruple deformation. Comparison of the model with the Pb+Pb and Xe+Xe data confirms that the 129Xe nucleus is a highly deformed triaxial ellipsoid that has neither a prolate nor oblate shape. This provides strong evidence for a triaxial deformation of the 129Xe nucleus from high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

  • Measurements of the Higgs boson inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections in the 4 ℓ decay channel at √s = 13 TeV

    • Inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections of the Higgs boson are measured in the H→ ZZ∗→ 4 ℓ (ℓ= e, μ) decay channel. The results are based on proton−proton collision data produced at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018, equivalent to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb - 1. The inclusive fiducial cross section for the H→ ZZ∗→ 4 ℓ process is measured to be σfid= 3.28 ± 0.32 fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of σfid , SM= 3.41 ± 0.18 fb. Differential fiducial cross sections are measured for a variety of observables which are sensitive to the production and decay of the Higgs boson. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. The results are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson interactions with Standard Model particles. © 2020, The Author(s).

    • This Letter presents direct searches for lepton flavour violation in Higgs boson decays, H→eτ and H→μτ, performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The searches are based on a data sample of proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. No significant excess is observed above the expected background from Standard Model processes. The observed (median expected) 95% confidence-level upper limits on the lepton-flavour-violating branching ratios are 0.47% (0.34−0.10 +0.13%) and 0.28% (0.37−0.10 +0.14%) for H→eτ and H→μτ, respectively. © 2019 The Author(s)

    • Statistical combinations of searches for charginos and neutralinos using various decay channels are performed using 139 fb^{-1} of pp collision data at sqrt[s]=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Searches targeting pure-wino chargino pair production, pure-wino chargino-neutralino production, or Higgsino production decaying via standard model W, Z, or h bosons are combined to extend the mass reach to the produced supersymmetric particles by 30-100 GeV. The depth of the sensitivity of the original searches is also improved by the combinations, lowering the 95% C.L. cross-section upper limits by 15%-40%.

  • Nanofluidics for Static and Dynamic DNA-Protein Interaction Studies - Repair of Double-Strand Breaks from a Single-Molecule Perspective

    • Double-strand breaks (DSBs) is one of the most lethal forms of DNA damage. A single DSB may result in stalling of vital cellular machineries, and thus, requires immediate measures by the cell. Although the main hallmarks of DSB repair mechanisms are known for most prokaryotes and eukaryotes, details on crucial intermediate steps are still to be explained, such as how the free DNA ends are kept in close proximity during the repair process.          In the original work, upon which this Thesis is based, the two main DSB repair mechanisms, homologous recombination (HR) and non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ), have been studied from a molecular perspective. A fluorescence-based single-molecule nanofluidics assay has been developed and employed to characterize and visualize static biomolecular interactions between DNA and key DSB repairing proteins. Furthermore, a novel dynamic nanofluidic device has been developed to enable dynamic interaction studies in real time, allowing analytes to be introduced on-demand to stretched DNA molecules.          Single-molecule characterization of the NHEJ mechanism in Bacillus subtilis , comprising the Ku and Ligase D proteins, revealed that the end-joining activity is mediated by C-terminal protrusions on the homodimeric Ku complex. Using the novel dynamic nanofluidic device, the Ku homodimer was further demonstrated to stay bound to the DNA ends and junctions after completed repair, similar to the human Ku70/80 heterodimer. In addition, the traditional static nanofluidic device was used to identify a previously unknown potential DNA-bridging role of CtIP, a key protein in the human HR process. This could possibly explain how broken DNA ends are kept in close proximity during the initial steps of DSB repair through HR in humans. A similar method was employed to show that the Xrs2 component is indispensable for the end-joining activity of the Mre11-Rad50-Xrs2 complex of Saccharomyces cerevisiae .

    • Purpose: Parenting programmes are seen as feasible and cost-effective in preventing early behavioural problems in children and adolescents. A number of studies have concluded that such programmes are effective in reducing child problem behaviours and improving the skills and well-being of parents. Nevertheless, less is known about long-term programme effects.Design/methodology/approach: A non meta-analytic discussion.Findings: Long-term evaluations of parenting programmes suffer from a number of methodological weaknesses resulting in an inability to make robust causal inferences about child and parent outcomes in the longer term. The current evidence is favorable but is likely to be biased by methodological weaknesses. There is a need for more studies of greater methodological strength to obtain conclusive evidence that would guide empirical research, practice and policy.Originality/value: The paper discusses weaknesses in long-term evaluations of parenting programmes and highlights concrete future directions toward improving the quality of study design, evaluation and data analysis.
