  • Pull-off characterization of FRCM/Concrete interface
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Composites Part B. - : Elsevier. - 1359-8368 .- 1879-1069. ; 165, s. 545-553
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites are usually surface-applied for strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The efficacy of the FRCM strengthening systems is dependent on the FRCM/concrete bond performance. This paper reports on the experimental results of FRCM/concrete bond characterization through pull-off tests. Six FRCM-strengthened RC slabs (500mm×500mm×100 mm) were prepared and enabled conducting 72 FRCM/concrete pull-off tests. The parameters investigated included: (a) FRCM material (carbon or polyparaphenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO)); (b) level of substrate roughness (no/low/high roughening); and (c) specimen’s test age (7, 28, 56, and 84 days). All FRCM systems were single-plied. The study revealed a significance of the surface preparation and test age of specimens on the FRCM/concrete pull-off strength. High-roughness specimens showed an average of 74% pull-off strength increase compared to those without roughening. Also, specimens tested at Day 84 showed 54% strength increase compared to those tested at Day 7, on average. PBO-FRCM system showed slightly higher pull-off strength than that of the carbon counterpart. The specimens showed two distinctive failure types at the (i) fabric/mortar interface and (ii) concrete/matrix interface: the latter was more prominent in carbon-FRCM. Nonetheless, the failure mode was most dependent on the fabric geometry and the substrate roughness. Based on a statistical analysis of the tested specimens, prediction models were proposed for the FRCM/concrete pull-off strength and failure mode.

  • Psychometric evaluation of a Swedish version of Minneapolis-Manchester quality of life-youth form and adolescent form
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Health and Quality of Life Outcomes. - London : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1477-7525. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: It has become important to measure long-term effects and quality of life in survivors of childhood cancer. The Minneapolis- Manchester Quality of Life (MMQL) instrument has been proven to better capture the quality of life (QoL) perspective of health than other instruments. The instrument has age appropriate versions and is therefore favourable for longitudinal studies of QoL of children surviving from cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Swedish version of MMQL-Youth Form and the Adolescent Form focusing on: 1) face and content validity 2) the internal consistency and 3) the test-retest reliability. Methods: The sample consisted of 950 pupils (11-16 years old) from 7 schools in the western Sweden who completed the questionnaire. For the test-retest evaluation 230 respondents completed the questionnaire two weeks later. Results: Face and content validity was supported and internal consistency was found to be acceptable for the total scale for both the MMQL-Youth Form (8-12 years of age) and the Adolescent Form (13-20 years of age). Test-retest reliability for the MMQL-Youth Form was moderate for 50% of the items and good for the remaining. For the MMQL-Adolescent Form the test-retest showed moderate or good agreement for 80% of the items and fair for 20%. Conclusions: The result indicated that the Swedish version of the MMQL-Youth Form and Adolescent Form was valid and reliable in a sample of healthy children in a Swedish context. It is recommended to test the instrument among diverse samples of children such as survivors of childhood cancer in order to validate its usefulness in research and clinical settings.

  • Being in transit and in transition : The experience of time at the place, when living with severe incurable disease - a phenomenological study
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 28:3, s. 458-468
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to describe the experience of time as it presents itself at the place being situated when living with severe incurable disease and receiving palliative care. The empirical data consist of 26 open-ended interviews with 23 patients receiving palliative care at home, at a palliative day care, in a palliative bed unit in hospital or in a nursing home in Norway. A common meaning of a shifting space for living emerged from the analysis and was revealed through three different aspects: (i) Transition from a predictable to an unpredictable time: To live with severe incurable disease marks a transition to a changed life involving an ongoing weakened and altered body with bothersome symptoms making experience of time different and unpredictable. (ii) Transition between a safe and unsafe time: When time is unpredictable, feeling safe is revealed as essential to how time is experienced at the place being situated. (iii) To be in transition from a homely to a homeless existence: In a time of increased bodily weakness, unpredictable ailments and displacements, the sense of belonging to the place is revealed as significant to the experience of time. Not knowing where to be in a time of change is like an existential cry of distress where the foothold in existence is lost. The findings are discussed and interpreted as an embodied experience originating from the passage of time continually affecting life sometimes so fundamentally that it marks a transition to a changed space of life that is reflected in the experience of time. © 2013 Nordic College of Caring Science.

  • Entering a World with No Future : A phenomenological study describing the embodied experience of time when living with severe incurable disease
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - Chichester : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 27:1, s. 165-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A phenomenological study describing the embodied experience of time when living with severe incurable disease This article presents findings from a phenomenological study exploring experience of time by patients living close to death. The empirical data consist of 26 open-ended interviews from 23 patients living with severe incurable disease receiving palliative care in Norway. Three aspects of experience of time were revealed as prominent: (i) Entering a world with no future; living close to death alters perception of and relationship to time. (ii) Listening to the rhythm of my body, not looking at the clock; embodied with severe illness, it is the body not the clock that structures and controls the activities of the day. (iii). Receiving time, taking time; being offered - not asked for - help is like receiving time that confirms humanity, in contrast to having to ask for help which is like taking others time and thereby revealing own helplessness. Experience of time close to death is discussed as an embodied experience of inner, contextual, relational dimensions in harmony and disharmony with the rhythm of nature, environment and others. Rhythms in harmony provide relief, while rhythms in disharmony confer weakness and limit time. © 2012 The Authors. Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences © 2012 Nordic College of Caring Science.

  • The pendulum time of life : the experience of time, when living with severe incurable disease—a phenomenological and philosophical study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Medicine, Health care and Philosophy. - Dordrecht : Springer Netherlands. - 1386-7423 .- 1572-8633. ; 18:2, s. 203-215
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the experience of time when living with severe incurable disease. A phenomenological and philosophical approach of description and deciphering were used. In our modern health care system there is an on-going focus on utilizing and recording the use of time, but less focus on the patient’s experience of time, which highlights the need to explore the patients’ experiences, particularly when life is vulnerable and time is limited. The empirical data consisted of 26 open-ended interviews with 23 participants receiving palliative care at home, in hospital or in a nursing home in Norway. The theoretical frameworks used are mainly based upon K. Martinsens philosophy of care, K. E. Løgstrup phenomenological philosophy, in addition to C. Saunders’ hospice philosophy, L. Feigenberg’s thanatology and U. Qvarnström’s research exploring patient’s reactions to impending death. Experience of time is described as being a movement that moves the individual towards death in the field of opposites, and deciphered to be a universal, but a typical and unique experience emerging through three integrated levels: Sense of time; where time is described as a movement that is proceeding at varying speeds. Relate totime; where the awareness of limited life changes the understanding of time to be more existential. Being in time; where limited time seems to clarify the basic living conditions and phenomena of life. The existence of life when the prospect of death is present is characterized by emotional swings that move within polarizing dimensions which is reflected in the experience of time illustrated as the moves of the pendulum in a grandfather clock. The diversity of the experience of time is oscillating between going fast or slow, being busy or calm, being unpredictable but predictable, safe or unsafe and between being good or bad, depending on the embodied situation of the individual. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

  • Bond performance of tensile lap-spliced basalt-FRP reinforcement in high-strength concrete beams
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Composite structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0263-8223 .- 1879-1085. ; 281
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the bond between high-strength concrete (HSC) and tensile lap-spliced basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars. Ten large-scale BFRP-reinforced concrete beams (300 × 450 × 3900 mm) were fabricated and tested under four-point loading until failure. The parameters investigated included the BFRP bar diameter (10, 12, and 16 mm), the splice length (400–1200 mm range), and the bar surface texture (sand-coated (SC) and helically wrapped (HW)). Test results demonstrated that the flexural capacity of the beams reinforced with SC-BFRP bars was almost similar to that of beams reinforced with HW-BFRP bars. However, SC-BFRP bars showed a slightly higher bond with concrete compared to that of helically wrapped counterparts. The bond strength of spliced BFRP bars was inversely related to the splice length. Also, BFRP bars with larger diameter bars require longer splice lengths to reach their maximum capacity. Finally, the experimentally estimated critical splice lengths were compared to those calculated by existing models and code-based equations. Both ACI 440.1R-15 and CSA S806-12 provisions were conservative in predicting splice length for BFRP bars. However, the CSA-S6-14 design code was more accurate in estimating the splice length for BFRP with bigger diameters. Though, it was not conservative with smaller diameters.

  • Neoliberalisation and educational reforms: impacts on teachers in a single school context
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Educational Review. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0013-1911 .- 1465-3397.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Similar to many countries in the Western world, educational reforms in Sweden have dramatically changed the educational system in the last few decades. The two reforms that we address in this paper concern "The Career Services for Teachers Reform" and "Teachers Salary Boost" which were implemented at the national level in Sweden in 2013 and 2017, respectively. In this ethnographic study we focus on the design features of these two contemporary reforms and how they impact on both the social and educational life of teachers and school leaders at a secondary high school. However, this change in organisational logic was not only a major digression from the academic tradition and its traditional character of "merit before birth". Due to design features within these reforms, the door to nepotism, real or imagined, was now wide open. Moreover, in the same way as these reforms represent something new to Swedish education, and to the teaching profession in particular, it is just one more step on a road already mapped out via the ongoing neo-liberalisation of society at large.

  • Effects of a 16-Week Digital Intervention on Sports Nutrition Knowledge and Behavior in Female Endurance Athletes with Risk of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nutrients. - Basel : MDPI. - 2072-6643. ; 15:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Female endurance athletes are considered a high-risk group for developing Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). Due to the lack of educational and behavioral intervention studies, targeting and evaluating the effects of the practical daily management of REDs, we developed the Food and nUtrition for Endurance athletes—a Learning (FUEL) program, consisting of 16 weekly online lectures and individual athlete-centered nutrition counseling every other week. We recruited female endurance athletes from Norway (n = 60), Sweden (n = 84), Ireland (n = 17), and Germany (n = 47). Fifty athletes with symptoms of REDs and with low risk of eating disorders, with no use of hormonal contraceptives and no chronic diseases, were allocated to either the FUEL intervention (n = 32) (FUEL) or a 16-week control period (n = 18) (CON). All but one completed FUEL, while 15 completed CON. We found strong evidence for improvements in sports nutrition knowledge, assessed via interviews, and moderate to strong evidence in the ratings concerning self-perceived sports nutrition knowledge in FUEL versus CON. Analyses of the seven-day prospective weighed food record and questions related to sports nutrition habits, suggested weak evidence for improvements in FUEL versus CON. The FUEL intervention improved sports nutrition knowledge and suggested weak evidence for improved sports nutrition behavior in female endurance athletes with symptoms of REDs.

  • Long-term quality of life and uncertainty in patients living with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Heart & lung : the journal of critical care. - St. Louis, MO : Elsevier BV. - 0147-9563 .- 1527-3288. ; 34:6, s. 386-92
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: This study describes the quality of life (QOL) and uncertainty in patients who have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and predicts QOL at long-term follow-up. METHODS: Long-term follow-up was defined as 6.9 years +/- 1 year (range 4.11-8.7 years). QOL was measured with the Quality of Life Index, and uncertainty was measured with the Mishel Uncertainty in Illness Scale. RESULTS: The overall QOL and health/functioning were unchanged over time. QOL in the socioeconomic (P = .002) and psychologic/spiritual domains (P = .012) decreased in the first year. From baseline to long-term follow-up, the QOL in the family domain (P = .011) and uncertainty (P = .002) decreased. Uncertainty was a predictor of low QOL. CONCLUSION: QOL was reasonably good 6.9 years post-ICD implantation. Patients felt less uncertain once they had passed the first year of their illness.
