  • Total cost of ownership model and significant cost parameters for the design of electric bus systems

    • Without experiences of electric buses, public transport authorities and bus operators have faced questions about how to implement them in a cost-effective way. Simple cost modelling cannot show how costs for different types of electric buses differ between different routes and timetables. Tools (e.g., HASTUS, PtMS, and optibus) which can analyse such details are complicated, time consuming to use, and provide insufficient insights into the mechanisms that influence the cost. This paper therefore proposes a method for how to calculate total cost of ownership, for different types of electric buses, in a way which can predict how the cost varies based on route and timetable. The method excludes factors which cause minor cost variations in an almost random manor, in order to better show the fundamental mechanisms influencing different costs. The method will help in finding ways to reduce the cost and help to define a few cases which deserve a deep analysis with more complete tools. Testing of the method in a Swedish context showed that the results are in line with other theoretical and practical studies, and how the total cost of ownership can vary depending on the variables. © 2020 by the authors.

  • On-board Clutch Slippage Detection and Diagnosis in Heavy Duty Machine

    • In order to reduce unnecessary stops and expensive downtime originating from clutch failure of construction equipment machines; adequate real time sensor data measured on the machinein combination with feature extraction and classification methods may be utilized.This paper, based on a study at Volvo Construction Equipment,presents a framework with feature extraction methods and an anomaly detection module combined with Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) for on-board clutch slippage detection and diagnosis in a heavy duty equipment. The feature extraction methods used are Moving Average Square Value Filtering (MASVF) and a measure of the fourth order statistical properties of the signals implemented as continuous queries over data streams. The anomaly detection module has two components,the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and the Logistics Regression classifier. CBR is a learning approach that classifies faults by creating a new solution for a new fault case from the solution of the previous fault cases. Through use of a data stream management system and continuous queries (CQs), the anomaly detection module continuously waits for a clutch slippage event detected by the feature extraction methods, the query returns a set of features which activates the anomaly detection module. The first component of the anomaly detection module trains a GMM to extracted features while the second component uses a Logistic Regression classifier for classifying normal and anomalous data. When an anomalyis detected, the Case-Based diagnosis module is activated for fault severity estimation.

    • A stream validation system called SVALI is developed in order to continuouslyvalidate data streams from industrial equipment. The functional data model of SVALI allows the user to dene meta-data and queries about the equipment in terms of types and functions. The two system functions model-andvalidate and learn-and-validate provide such validation functionality. The experiments show that parallel stream processing enables SVALI to scale very well with respect to response time and system throughput. The paper is based on a real world application for wheel loader slippage detection at Volvo Construction Equipment.

    • Currently an advanced remotely controlled vibration laboratory is developed and implemented at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Karlskrona, Sweden. The new developments in the laboratory setup will provide users to carry out vibration measurements on a cantilever beam system with remotely adjustable dynamic properties and to estimate dynamic characteristics of it. The dynamic properties of the cantilever beam are remotely modified by attaching structural parts such as a block of mass, a spring mass system and a non-linear spring. In the development of this remote-lab, a number of different approaches were adopted for the production of well-defined experiments. Also, the new prototype laboratory is designed based on finite elements modeling (FEM) and LABVIEW. The test object, attachment mechanism for sub structures, relevant experiments, and proper interface for managing the lab via Internet and many other things have been considered.

  • A Finite Element Analysis of a Crack Penetrating or Deflecting into an Interface in a Thin Laminate

    • The crack tip driving force of a crack growing from a pre-crack that is perpendicular to and terminating at an interface between two materials is investigated using a linear fracture mechanics theory. The analysis is performed both for a crack penetrating the interface, growing straight ahead, and for a crack deflecting into the interface. The results from finite element calculations are compared with asymptotic solutions for infinitesimally small crack extensions. The solution is found to be accurate even for fairly large amounts of crack growth. Further, by comparing the crack tip driving force of the deflected crack with that of the penetrating crack, it is shown how to control the path of the crack by choosing the adhesion of the interface relative to the material toughness.

    • Planar ground float glass surfaces and the surfaces within holes are polished using fluid jet polishing (FJP) in order to improve their visual appearance or material strength. The large flexibility of FJP makes it suitable for polishing holes and other complex geometries. The influence of polishing speed, incident angle, distance, pressure, abrasive concentration, and nozzle diameter are investigated. Al2O3 is the abrasive used. The surface quality is evaluated visually and also measured with an optical profiler. The mechanical strength of the polished holes are evaluated with an MTS testing machine. Planar surfaces, and the surfaces of drilled and water cut holes are greatly improved by polishing. For a planar surface the lowest root mean square surface slope, Sdq, value achieved is 0·5 deg using 50% abrasive and 1000 mesh grains. The failure load of the glass with drilled holes increased 20% with FJP

  • Cyber-Threat Intelligence Architecture for Smart-Grid Critical Infrastructures Protection

    • Critical infrastructures (CIs) are becoming increasingly sophisticated with embedded cyber-physical systems (CPSs) that provide managerial automation and autonomic controls. Yet these advances expose CI components to new cyber-threats, leading to a chain of dysfunctionalities with catastrophic socio-economical implications. We propose a comprehensive architectural model to support the development of incident management tools that provide situation-awareness and cyber-threats intelligence for CI protection, with a special focus on smart-grid CI. The goal is to unleash forensic data from CPS-based CIs to perform some predictive analytics. In doing so, we use some AI (Artificial Intelligence) paradigms for both data collection, threat detection, and cascade-effects prediction.

  • Choosing Component Origins for Software Intensive Systems: In-House, COTS, OSS or Outsourcing?-A Case Survey

    • The choice of which software component to use influences the success of a software system. Only a few empirical studies investigate how the choice of components is conducted in industrial practice. This is important to understand to tailor research solutions to the needs of the industry. Existing studies focus on the choice for off-the-shelf (OTS) components. It is, however, also important to understand the implications of the choice of alternative component sourcing options (CSOs), such as outsourcing versus the use of OTS. Previous research has shown that the choice has major implications on the development process as well as on the ability to evolve the system. The objective of this study is to explore how decision making took place in industry to choose among CSOs. Overall, 22 industrial cases have been studied through a case survey. The results show that the solutions specifically for CSO decisions are deterministic and based on optimization approaches. The non-deterministic solutions proposed for architectural group decision making appear to suit the CSO decision making in industry better. Interestingly, the final decision was perceived negatively in nine cases and positively in seven cases, while in the remaining cases it was perceived as neither positive nor negative.

    • In-home healthcare services based on the Internet-of-Things (IoT) have great business potential; however, a comprehensive platform is still missing. In this paper, an intelligent home-based platform, the iHome Health-IoT, is proposed and implemented. In particular, the platform involves an open-platform-based intelligent medicine box (iMedBox) with enhanced connectivity and interchangeability for the integration of devices and services; intelligent pharmaceutical packaging (iMedPack) with communication capability enabled by passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) and actuation capability enabled by functional materials; and a flexible and wearable bio-medical sensor device (Bio-Patch) enabled by the state-of-the-art inkjet printing technology and system-on-chip. The proposed platform seamlessly fuses IoT devices (e. g., wearable sensors and intelligent medicine packages) with in-home healthcare services (e. g., telemedicine) for an improved user experience and service efficiency. The feasibility of the implemented iHome Health-IoT platform has been proven in field trials.

  • A Digital Filter Method for Forced Response Computation

    • Transient forced response of mechanical structures is usually computed using time domain integration. This is often computationally costly, and the numerical precision and stability are concerns. In the present paper, a novel method based on modal superposition, using a new digital filter implementation, is presented. Poles and residues of the model are used as input data, which allows for using data from a finite element model, a lumped parameter model, or from experimental modal analysis. Modal damping can be used if the damping matrix is unknown. With the proposed method, the frequency dependant error can easily be computed, and can be chosen arbitrarily small by selecting proper sampling frequency (time increment). The method is applicable to all linear structures and can be used for stationary or transient input data. Simulation results show that the new method is superior to the alternative methods, at less computational cost.
