What is the word for 'Engineering' in Swedish : Swedish students conceptions of their discipline

- Engineering education in Sweden – as in the rest of the world – is experiencing a decline in student interest. There are concerns about the ways in which students think about engineering education, why they join an academic programme in engineering, and why they persist in their studies. In this context the aims of the Nationellt ämnesdidaktiskt Centrum för Teknikutbildning i Studenternas Sammanhang project (CeTUSS) is to investigate the student experience and to identify and support a continuing network of interested researchers, as well as in building capacity for disciplinary pedagogic investigation. The Stepping Stones project brings together these interests in a multi-researcher, multi-institutional study that investigates how tudents and academic staff perceive engineering in Sweden and in Swedish education. The first results of that project are reported here. As this study is situated uniquely in Swedish education, it allows for exploration of “a Swedish perspective” on conceptions of engineering. The Stepping Stones project was based on a model of research capacity-building previously instantiated in the USA and Australia (Fincher & Tenenberg, 2006).

Quility Monitoring in Robotised Short Circuiting GMA Welding

- This paper addresses the problem of automatic monitoring the weld quality produced by robotised short arc welding. A simple statistical change detection algorithm for the weld quality, recursive Sequential Probability Ratio Test (SPRT), is used. The algorithm may equivalently be viewed as a cumulative sum (CUSUM) - type test. The test statistics is based upon the variance of the amplitude of the weld voltage. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using experimental data. The results obtained from the algorithm indicate that it is possible to detect changes in the weld quality automatically and on-line.

An Integrated Structured Analysis Approach to Intelligent Agent Communication

- Intelligent multi-agent systems offer promising approaches for knowledge-intensive distributed applications. Now that such systems are becoming applied on a wider industrial scale, there is a practical need for structured analysis and design methods, similarly as exist for more conventional information and knowledge systems. This is still lacking for intelligent agent software. In this paper, we describe how the process of agent communication specification can be carried out through a structured analysis approach. The structured analysis approach we propose is an integrated extension of the CommonKADS methodology, a widely used standard for knowledge analysis and systems development. Our approach is based on and illustrated by a large-scale multi-agent application for distributed energy load management in industries and households, called Homebots, which is discussed as an extensive industrial case study.

- The deregulation of the European energy market, combined with emerging ad-vanced capabilities of information technology, provides strategic opportunities for new knowledge-oriented services on the power grid. HOMEBOTS is the name we have coined for one of these innovative services: decentralized power load management at the customer side, automatically carried out by a ‘society’ of interactive house-hold, industrial and utility equipment. They act as independent intelligent agents that communicate and negotiate in a computational market economy. The knowl-edge and competence aspects of this application are discussed, using an improved version of task analysis according to the COMMONKADS knowledge methodology. Illustrated by simulation results, we indicate how customer knowledge can be mo-bilized to achieve joint goals of cost and energy savings. General implications for knowledge creation and its management are discussed.

- The process of agent communication modeling has not yet received much attention in the knowledge systems area. Conventional knowledge systems are rather simple with respect to their communication structure: often it is a straightforward question-and-answer sequence between system and end user. However, this is different in recent intelligent multi-agent systems. Therefore, agent communication aspects are now in need of a much more advanced treatment in knowledge management, acquisition and modeling. In general, a much better integration between the respective achievements of multi-agent and knowledge-based systems modeling is an important research goal. In this paper, we describe how agent communications can be specified as an extension of well-known knowledge modeling techniques. The emphasis is on showing how a structured process of communication requirements analysis proceeds, based on existing results from agent communication languages. The guidelines proposed are illustrated by and based on a large-scale industrial multi-agent application for distributed energy load management in industries and households, called Homebots. Homebots enable cost savings in energy consumption by coordinating their actions through an auction mechanism.

- Inom det svenska försvaret pågår en av de största militära reformer som Sverige genomfört i modern tid. Från att ha varit ett invasionsförsvar ändras nu inriktningen mot ett rörligt, flexibelt insatsförsvar, som både kan försvara Sverige och medverka vid internationella insatser. I december 2004 fattade riksdagen ett beslut om Försvarsmaktens struktur under tiden 2005-2007. För Karlskronas del var beslutet av yttersta vikt, då det ger anvisningar om vilken verksamhet som skall bedrivas vid Sydkustens marinbas i Karlskrona.Syftet med föreliggande studie är att fördjupa förståelsen för den påverkansprocess som ledde fram till försvarsbeslutet 2004 sett ur ett kommunalpolitiskt perspektiv. Studien omfattar tiden från det att överbefälhavare Håkan Syrén lämnade sitt underlag inför kommande försvarsbeslut till dess att riksdagen fattade beslut. De frågor som studien söker svar på är:• Vilka hegemoniska diskurser respektive motdiskurser finns från det att överbefälhavaren lämnade sitt underlag i februari 2004 till dess att propositionen röstades igenom i riksdagen 15 december 2004?• Hur uttrycks den politiska påverkansprocessen på lokal nivå?Avsikten är inte att utvärdera vare sig aktörer eller resultatet av försvarsbeslutet utan att skapa förståelse för försvarsbeslutsprocessen. I fokus står den påverkansprocess som lokala aktörer är en del av med målsättning att bibehålla Sydkustens marinbas. Studien kan därmed sägas sluta där en egentligen utvärdering skulle ha börjat. Den del av försvarsbeslutsprocessen som berör Flygflottiljen i Kallinge inkluderas inte i denna studie.

- Studiens övergripande syfte är att fördjupa förståesen för jämställdhet inom en kommunal förvaltning utifrån tre teoretiska utgångspunkter; teoretiska perspektiv på organisation, könsperspektiv samt teorier om makt. I fokus står en grupp yrkesverksamma kvinnor och män. Vid genomförandet av den empiriska studien används observationer och kvalitativa intervjuer. När ett könsperspektiv är utgångspunkt vid studier av en organisation framträder könets betydelse på såväl struktur- som individnivå. I resultatet illustrerar en bild av både hinder och möjligheter för en jämställd organisation. De hinder som finns är hierarki, könssegregering, kunskapsbrist, kulturell kod samt språkbruk. Möjligherna utgörs av styrning, kunskap och metoder.
