- Experimental data from inclusive production of large pT hadronsin high-energy proton-nucleus collisions are analysed with emphasis on the influence of the size of the target nucleus. It is found that data at pT≤3 GeV/c are consistent with the hypothesis that the incoming proton collides "simultaneously" with all the nucleons in its way, resulting in an effective collision energy larger than the one expected in a single proton-nucleon hit. At pT > 3 GeV/c, data are in conflict with such a simple model, a result we think is a consequence of the dominance of hard parton collisions at very large pT.

- Denna rapport sammanfattar resultaten från projektet “OPTimised Yield casting ProcEss” (OPTYPE). Projektet som finansierats av Energimyndigheten är en fortsättning på projektet ”Energisnål gjut- och formningsprocess”. Projektet syftar till att vidareutveckla och industrianpassa den gjutteknik som togs fram i det första projektet. Första delen i projektet har varit att färdigställa den pilotanläggning som i slutet av det föregående projektet installerades på Skandinaviska Gjuteriskolan. Det gäller främst skyddsgaller, säkerhetsbrytare och andra olika säkerhetsfunktioner som byggts in i utrustningen för att säkerställa att inga skador kan ske vid gjutning. I projektet har det utvecklats och installerats en helt ny tryckstyrningsutrustning. I det första projektet användes en enkel flödeskontrollerad tryckstyrning. Det i projektet framtagna styrsystemet är numera digitalt och styr mot det aktuella övertrycket inne i ugnen. På så vis är inte längre gasexpansionen något som användaren behöver ta hänsyn till. Det arbetades med en articifiell komponent som togs fram inom projektgruppen. Syftet med komponenten var att den skulle representera så många olika typer av gjutgods som möjligt samt genom olika tjocklekar generera olika typer av mikrostruktur och egenskaper. Jämförelser mellan det tryck som matats in och det tryck som uppmätts visar på att utrustningen läcker något varvid någon aktiv avluftning inte krävs. Läckaget motsvarar ungefär sex procents tryckförlust. Resultaten från projeket visar att potentialen med tekniken att gjuta underifrån är stor. När nu möjligheten finns att styra trycket digitalt är inte steget lika långt till riktig produktion. I projektet gjordes även enklare jämförelser på utbytet mellan två komponenter, där visade OPTYPE på en 12% förbättring.

Phenomenological relations between large-pT meson spectra

- Recent data on the hadron ratios π+π-, K+π+, K-π-, and ηπ0 at large transverse momenta are shown to be consistent with predictions from a simple phenomenological two-component picture for large-pT production. The very-large-pT part of meson spectra is assumed to be dominated by particles that contain one of the incoming valence quarks, while small-and medium-pT mesons are built up mostly of quarks created in quark-antiquark pairs. Exceptions are K- and φ spectra, where for obvious reasons the very-large-pT component is missing. Simple relations between π, K, and η spectra are found. Predictions for the large-pT spectrum of φ mesons are presented.

- Personnel in communication-intense workplaces are exposed to noise, occasionally so high they risk hearing-related disorders. Still, intervention studies are few, with ambiguous results. To increase the impact and sustainability of the interventions, we used a participatory method in which personnel and managers at one preschool and one obstetrics ward were actively involved in the intervention process. To identify work environment problems to target in the intervention, we performed qualitative focus group interviews prior to the intervention among 16 personnel and managers. Four main themes emerged from the inductive thematic analysis: a challenging and harmful sound environment, the sound environment causing hearing-related symptoms and health effects, a good sound environment not being prioritised, and resourceful and motivated personnel. As the participatory intervention entailed implementation of several changes, we also performed interviews post-intervention among nine personnel and managers from the preschool and the obstetrics ward where interventions had been implemented. Five main themes emerged from the inductive thematic analysis: increased awareness of the sound environment and risks to hearing and health, increased control over the sound environment, influence of the building and interior design, other factors influencing the intervention process (concurrent work environment issues such as stress, and limited resources), and motivation to maintain the positive changes. We conclude that the personnel perceive a risk to their hearing and health and that sound environment improvements should be prioritised in communication-intense workplaces. A participatory approach may facilitate motivation and empowerment to change, but resources and support are needed for comprehensive and effective implementation.

Overspending on smartphone purchases among Swedish young adults

- In the Nordic countries with growing markets for consumer credit, a concern is that consumption desires in conjunction with easily accessible credit make financially constrained young adults vulnerable to problem debt and over-indebtedness. In addressing this concern empirically, we investigate whether retail offers of instalment payments of discounted cash prices tempt young adults to finance purchases of more expensive premium smartphones than they would purchase by cash payment. Descriptions of smartphones ranging from budget to latest premium models are in an online experiment presented to 152 Swedish young adults between 18 and 25 years. We employ a within-group design requiring the participants in counterbalanced order to choose a preferred smartphone twice, either if the default choice is paying the regular cash price or two-year monthly instalments with a 20% discount on the cash price. Although a majority chose the same smartphone twice seemingly not influenced by the retail offer, this was not the case for about one third of the young adults who despite a negative attitude to borrowing choose instalment payments of more expensive premium smartphones, and more than half of them at a price exceeding the regular cash price they choose to pay for a cheaper smartphone. Instalment payments as well as rental contracts are penetrating many consumer markets in which young adults are large segments. These new forms of accessible credit should be particularly attractive to those who are financially constrained with potentially negative consequences for their solvency. Our results suggest that regulation policies may need to be considered.

- The goal of this book is to develop a working hypothesis for mitral valve function in the beating heart. We have been studying the 4-D dynamics of the heart using biplane radiography of surgically implanted radiopaque markers for the past forty years,1 with emphasis on the mitral and aortic valves during the past 20 years, and dense leaflet and annular marker arrays during the past several years. Data from the control runs in these studies comprise the substrate for this book.
