  • A critical multimodal analysis of the Romanian press coverage of camp evictions and deportations of the Roma migrants from France
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Discourse & Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1750-4813 .- 1750-4821. ; 12:4, s. 339-356
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we carry out a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) of a sample from a larger corpus of Romanian news articles that covered the controversial camp evictions and repatriation of Romanian Roma migrants from France that began in 2010 and continue to the time of writing in 2017. These French government policies have been highly criticized both within France and by international political and aid organizations. However, the analysis shows how these brutal, anti-humanitarian events became recontextualized in the Romanian Press to represent the French government’s actions as peaceful and consensual. In addition, the demonization of the Roma in the press serves as a strategy to continuously disassociate them from their Romanian counterparts. While there is a long history of discrimination against the Roma in Romania, these particular recontextualizations can be understood in the context of the Romanian government’s need to gloss over its failure to comply with the Schengen accession requirements and acquire full European Union (EU) membership.

  • E7 as D=10 space-time symmetry: Origin of the twistor transform
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: Phys.Lett.B302 (1993) 189.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Massless particle dynamics in D=10 Minkowski space is given an E7-covariant formulation, including both space-time and twistor variables. E7 contains the conformal algebra as a subalgebra. Analogous constructions apply to D=3,4 and 6.

  • Scrap happens, but does it have to? On the potential of increasing machine component reuse
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The vision of the “circular economy” provides some guidelines for society to strive towards. In the circular economy, material resources are used and reused and recycled better, if not endlessly. Products are to require less material and deliver more function. In industry, manufacturers of all types of products and parts have started to investigate how they and their products can fit in.  The purpose of this study was to address the question – What can a component manufacturer do to improve the resource efficiency of its products through extending product lifetime and improving end-of-use management? To answer this question, the study focused on the key product of one component manufacturer, a bearing, a part that is used in many things mechanical. Mixed methods were utilized including material flow analyses to quantify downstream bearing material flows and interviews with customers of the component manufacturer to provide explanations about the fate of bearings, their obsolescence, and the possibility to remanufacture and reuse more of them and recycle them in a better way.  Results of the study reveal that there are large opportunities for the component manufacturer to remanufacture more and that there are sizable environmental benefits to doing so. Most notably, bearings in industrial use oftentimes become scrap not because they fail but because an end-user deems them to be untrustworthy. In these situations, remanufacturing offers a way to restore the bearings but often, end-users do not choose that option.  End-users make obsolescence and remanufacturing decisions with consideration to risks at the system-level and their ability to make a thorough assessment is limited by lack of time and information. These and other lessons learned from this study demonstrate the kind of low-hanging fruit that component manufacturers may have but indicate that picking it may require changes to the way they do business.

  • Rational and symbolic uses of performance measurement : experiences from Polish universities
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd.. - 0951-3574. ; 32:3, s. 750-781
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose The purpose of this paper is to facilitate a deeper understanding of the uses and users of performance measurement (PM) in the university context. Design/methodology/approach Empirical data were gathered from four universities. This approach allows for a multilevel and comparative analysis based on the neo-institutional theory. The results are discussed alongside interdisciplinary literature on the use of PM in the public sector. Findings PM practices at universities have become increasingly popular on institutional, organisational and individual levels. The results indicate that different types of PM are used in universities and that the extent, and scope of PM used by various actors differ. Universities often use PM in a ceremonial and symbolic manner, with the aim of legitimising themselves externally as research-oriented institutions. The use of PM depends on both, exogenous factors (such as isomorphic pressures) and endogenous factors related to the different responses of organisations and individual actors (university managers, and academics). However, the analysis at the internal level reveals different attitudes and some resistance to the use of such kinds of PM. In universities with a local focus, the use of PM for rational decision-making is generally loosely coupled with the reporting performance for external accountability purposes. Moreover, the internal use of PM can be also symbolic. Originality/value The authors assume that the use of PM depends on a number of exogenous and endogenous factors. PM uses and users are discussed in the specific context of the higher education system in Poland. The four business school cases facilitate a comparative analysis of the similarities and differences in terms of the uses and users of PM in the context of internationally and locally oriented universities.

  • Using photographs in qualitative accounting research
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Zeszyty Teoretyczne Rachunkowosci. - 1641-4381 .- 2391-677X. ; 47:4, s. 51-67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose : When the “linguistic turn” is replaced by the “visual turn”, there is a natural need for social scientists to embrace the new reality and incorporate visuals in their research. As a result, the importance of visual research, which centers on the use of visual sources, is growing. This paper provides an overview of how visual materials and related methodological approaches can be used in qualitative management and accounting research. Methodology/approach : We begin by reviewing the literature on the research methods, drawing from many disciplines such as sociology, organizational learning, management, and accounting. Next, we analyze three cases – already published papers in accounting – to illustrate how photography can be used in qualitative accounting research.  Findings : There is a growing literature on visual research methods. Researchers have used visual materials as primary and secondary data and multiple methodological approaches. Visual methods can also be used in accounting research. Originality/value : This paper provides an overview of emerging methodological approaches that use visual materials and discusses how they can be incorporated into qualitative accounting research. Research limitations: Drawing a simple line between the various approaches presented in this paper is difficult as researchers can use visual material in unique ways throughout the research process. Therefore, the presented methodological categorizations can only help to better understand emerging visual research.

  • The "Forced to help" study : study design, methods and epidemiological data
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: BMC Psychiatry. - 1471-244X. ; 7:Suppl 1, s. S 104-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background The aim of the study was to examine coercive treatment in Swedish child and adolescent psychiatry from different scientific perspectives. The study was done in a multidisciplinary group comprised of researchers and PhD-students from child and adolescent psychiatry, law, philosophy, education and sociology. In this presentation, the design of the study will be presented and also some preliminary epidemiological data. Methods Epidemiological data from the period 2000 – 2004 was collected from all clinics in Sweden. Hospital records concerning all involuntarily admitted persons less than 18 years of age during one year were also collected from all clinics in Sweden. Results We found a tendency towards more coercive care during recent years. At least 150 children and adolescents were involuntarily admitted annually. The variation between counties was considerable. In some counties, adolescents on coercive treatment were treated together with adults. Girls were involuntarily admitted twice as often as boys. The most frequent diagnoses were psychosis, anorexia nervosa, self-destructive behavior and drug abuse. Conclusion Coercive treatment seems to be more frequent in recent years, but the variation is large between different counties. Contrary to adults, girls are more frequently treated involuntarily than boys. Further analysis of data is necessary to get a more comprehensive picture of the reasons for coercion of under aged persons.
