  • Broken Data : Broken World
  • 2016
  • Konstnärligt arbete (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a world where predictive big data analytics and data driven policy and design are increasingly prevalent, the concept of broken data seeks to interrogate and disrupt the possibilities associated with these trends. Concepts of breakage, damage and repair, and recent literatures about ‘broken world’ type theories, offer us an alternative starting point: what are the implications of putting these concepts at the centre of our understanding of digital data and its futures? By whom and where does data explicitly and more invisibly manifest itself as broken, incomplete and damaged? How is it repaired? What might an agenda for broken data research look like? And why might we need one?

  • Broken data : Conceptualising data in an emerging world
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Big Data and Society. - Thousand Oaks : SAGE Publications. - 2053-9517. ; 5:1, s. 1-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we introduce and demonstrate the concept-metaphor of broken data. In doing so, we advance critical discussions of digital data by accounting for how data might be in processes of decay, making, repair, re-making and growth, which are inextricable from the ongoing forms of creativity that stem from everyday contingencies and improvisatory human activity. We build and demonstrate our argument through three examples drawn from mundane everyday activity: the incompleteness, inaccuracy and dispersed nature of personal self-tracking data; the data cleaning and repair processes of Big Data analysis and how data can turn into noise and vice versa when they are transduced into sound within practices of music production and sound art. This, we argue is a necessary step for considering the meaning and implications of data as it is increasingly mobilised in ways that impact society and our everyday worlds.

  • Close to Nature
  • 2011
  • Konstnärligt arbete (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • What does it mean to be close to nature? This question is examined in this video work based on 9 short clips. The first clip of a woody landscape was recorded outside of Taivalkoski, Koillismaa, Finland using an Intenso Viddy, a cheap Video Messenger. The clip, 30 seconds in duration, of the landscape was transferred from the Viddy to a laptop. When played on the laptop the screen was filmed with the Viddy, creating the second clip and another iteration of the primary filmed sequence. The process was repeated until there were 9 clips representing the landscape. Each of the nine iterations brings the viewer closer to the scenery, while the image and sound also become more distorted and noisy. The Viddy was marketed as a fridge magnet with possibilities to record and play messages. With it’s 1,8” screen, simple microphone and camera it has poor audio-visual qualities. In Close to Nature the limited quality of the Viddy is used to evoke the character of the work. Each iteration of the initial clip induces a closer image, but also more abstraction. By using the side effects of a cheap consumer electronic device, and no video editing of the clips, serendipitous ready-made dimensions and glitch aesthetics are high lighted. In contrast to genres of landscape art, and representations of nature where the sublime and feelings of wonder and awe are valued, Close to Nature instead stresses an appreciation of imperfection, chance, and the juxtaposition of a media dominated consumer society with experiences of nature.

  • Det smarta hemmets mundanisering
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Kulturella perspektiv. - 1102-7908. ; 29:4, s. 75-79
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The smart home around 2020 is based on interconnected software equipped things that through automation are supposed to deliver new pleasures and conveniences. This technological makeover of domestic settings is characterised by consumption of things that are promoted as novel and spectacular. If successful, these things are then gradually transformed into ignored infrastructure, into paraphernalia of routinised everyday life. This is a pro- cess of mundanisation, through which complex technologies are seldom domesticated. Instead they are integrated in everyday life while still be- ing incomprehensible and beyond control. I illus- trate this process with examples from a smart lighting system.
