  • Assessing user perceptions of the interplay between the sharing, access, platform and community- based economies
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Information Technology and People. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0959-3845 .- 1758-5813. ; 33:3, s. 1037-1051
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Digitally intermediated peer-to-peer exchanges have accelerated in occurrence, and as a consequence, they have introduced an increased pluralism of connotations. Accordingly, this paper aims to assess user perceptions of the interplay between the sharing, access, platform, and community-based economies.Design/methodology/approach: The sharing, access, platform, and community-based economies have been systematically tracked in the social media landscape using Social Media Analytics (SMA). In doing so, a total material of 62,855 publicly posted user-generated content concerning the four respective economies were collected and analyzed.Findings: Even though the sharing economy has been conceptually argued to be interlinked with the access, platform, and community-based economies, the empirical results of the study do not validate this interlinkage. Instead, the results regarding user perceptions in social media show that the sharing, access, platform, and community-based economies manifest as clearly separated.Originality/value: This paper contributes to existing literature by offering an empirical validation, as well as an in-depth understanding, of the sharing economy's interlinkage to other economies, along with the extent to which the overlaps between these economies manifest in social media.

  • Cultural policy as a governmental proxy tool for improved health : The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s collaborations with cultural workers 1970–1975
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Cultural Policy. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1028-6632 .- 1477-2833. ; 27:5, s. 667-682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article highlights cultural policy as a governmental proxy to address political matters beyond the cultural domain – here civil health – and the need to problematize and historicize ‘arts in health’ policies. The article centres on the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s collaborations with cultural workers 1970–1975, framed by three contextual developments: politicization of the cultural sector, call for innovative governmental information, and changing character of health information. Theoretically, the article draws from the field of cultural policy research, with an emphasis on historiographical perspectives. The result shows that despite interdependence, the collaborations were an arena where interests clashed. The main conflict lay in what art should seek to change for the better: society or its citizens? However, the conflicts were also due to a mixture of roles: the agency suddenly found itself a patron of the arts, and the cultural workers producers of governmental information.

  • Re-shaped by mobile technologies’ disruption : the videogame industry in Turkey
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Studies on Marketing Insights. - Antalya, Turkey : Akdeniz University. - 2667-6591. ; 4:1, s. 44-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - In this paper, we investigate the business disruption effects of mobile technologies for the videogame industry in Turkey. Previous research shows that before mobile gaming became prevalent globally, Turkish videogame industry was extremely small and lacked any success stories for either console or PC platforms.Design/methodology/approach - To capture the nuances of this disruptive transition, we performed structured interviews with industry experts and analyzed prominent discussion forums. We especially focused on answering the following questions: (1) how prepared were Turkish videogame development companies in handling the mobile disruptive change; (2) what kind of transformations they experienced in their business plans and practices; (3) how the disruption affected the way they viewed their customer base; and (4) what future disruptions they expect in their industry.Findings - Analysis of interview and discussion data revealed some recurring themes that we discussed in detail: (1) ability to handle disruptive change (e.g., technical resources and fast-changing industry trends); (2) business transformations (e.g., agile vs. slow development, marketing-oriented business practices, and market burn-outs); (3) re-definition of the customer base (e.g., generalizations, niche categories, piracy, and clone games); (4) future disruptions (e.g., AR/VR and the maturity of mobile gamers); and (5) other general themes (e.g, stigma about gaming and localization of global titles vs. local production of original IPs).Social/Economic/Sectoral value - In order to create a stronger local industry, state bodies and non-governmental organizations can facilitate positive outcomes from these disruption periods by addressing and creating solutions for the issues revealed in this work. Originality – This paper offers unique insights to understand the videogame industry in Turkey.

  • Experts, dads and technology : Gendered talk about online music
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International journal of cultural studies. - London : Sage Publications. - 1367-8779 .- 1460-356X. ; 19:2, s. 177-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the internet and digital media technology increasingly central to practices around music, this shift is often seen as contributing to a networked music use characterized by individualism. Drawing on a focus group study with young adults in Stockholm and Moscow, this article argues, however, that digital music use today is shaped by discourses of difference, with gender a significant factor both in constructions of the ideal music and technology user, and in terms of musical influence and guidance. Taking into account contemporary research on new media technology, as well as feminist studies of technology and music, the article questions ideas of a neutral user of new music technologies, showing how the gendering of music and media technology can be seen as simultaneously context-bound and cutting across geographies.

  • Resources and repertoires : elderly online practices
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 0267-3231 .- 1460-3705. ; 34:1, s. 38-56
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Inspired by the theoretical notion of media repertoires, this article analyses what online repertoires Swedish senior citizens construct in everyday life. It answers two research questions: What online repertoires do elderly users have? How do elderly users’ online repertoires vary depending on their access to material, discursive and social resources? The article draws on data from a large, representative Swedish survey (n = 1264, response rate 63%), and uses correlations and multiple regression analysis to identify and analyse online repertoires with reference to elderly users’ access to resources such as income, infrastructure, level of education and social networks. The analysis reveals a significant element of selectivity in the online repertoires of elderly users. It also shows strong connections between different Internet activities. In addition, it offers substantial evidence in support of the proposition that individuals who are resource rich have broader repertoires and higher frequency of usage than other users.

  • Exploring Twitter as network site for research on and in social innovation.
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Doing research on and in social media highlights the complexity of seeing a researcher as something outside of a media practice. In this paper I articulate and explore my own research presence in social media, framing it in the context of doing research on (and in) ‘social innovation’. I argue that social media tools in fact can be seen as a social innovation of it’s own. Using the microblog tool Twitter I engage in different forms of practice: 1) following my followers social innovation activity on Twitter 2) asking my followers for social innovation examples on Twitter 3) conduct searches for social innovation on Twitter. Discussing production of this scientific knowledge I touch upon social circumstances surrounding social innovation. I present the ability of Putnam’s research on civicness to understand and explore possible value of social media practice in this context. Results implicate an intricate ongoing weaving of connecting practices, what I describe as themes of ‘cross-pollinations’, ‘personal as political’ and ‘dynamic communities’. I claim that the established norm of reciprocity and the forms it can take is especially interesting to explore more for doing research on and in social media.

  • How Critical Digital Method Development can Strengthen Studies of Media and Terrorism
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Media and Journalism in an Age of Terrorism. - Newcastle upon Tyne, UK : Cambridge Scholars Publishing. - 1527533123 - 9781527533127 ; , s. 168-
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this chapter I argue and describe how studies of digital media and terrorism can be strengthened by increased methodological awareness concerning critical approaches and digital methods as critical digital methods. Critical digital method development is research involved in a reflexive project regarding digital methods and their role in shaping critical terrorism studies. The chapter includes suggestions for how this critical digital method development can be furthered.

  • Social media support and strengthen public service media among media professionals
  • 2010
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is studying how public service-media is "talked about" within the social media tool twitter (www.twitter.com). Following the Swedish twitter-sphere, I take a netnographic approach following these issues: 1. How, where and why becomes public service-broadcasting a twitter theme? 2. How person-oriented vs institution-oriented is the discussion?3. What underlying values can be found in the discussion? The analytical framework is participatory culture that is a landmark of the new media logic: affiliations, expressions, collaborative problem-solving and flows of media. Main result is that within social media a strong support for public service-values can be found. One special example is how the the online service SVT play, starts a "twitter-appeal" concerning Apple allowing it to be an application for iPhone.
