  • This changes sustainable HCI
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450356206 - 9781450356213 ; 2018-April
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • More than a decade into Sustainable HCI (SHCI) research, the community is still struggling to converge on a shared understanding of sustainability and HCI's role in addressing it. We think this is largely a positive sign, reflective of maturity; yet, lacking a clear set of aims and metrics for sustainability continues to be the community's impediment to progressing, hence we seek to articulate a vision around which the community can productively coalesce. Drawing from recent SHCI publications, we identify commonalities that might form the basis of a shared understanding, and we show that this understanding closely aligns with the authoritative conception of a path to a sustainable future proffered by Naomi Klein in her book This Changes Everything. We elaborate a set of contributions that SHCI is already making that can be unified under Klein's narrative, and compare these categories of work to those found in past surveys of the field as evidence of substantive progress in SHCI.

  • Maturity Framework Enabling Organizational Digital Readiness
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering at SPS2020. - Amsterdam : IOS Press BV. - 9781614994398 ; , s. 649-660, s. 649-660
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digitalization and the use of advanced technologies for more flexible and resource efficient production processes are changing the industrial competitive environment. However, new technologies are not seldom implemented without the whole organization being ready to fully utilize its benefits. This readiness can be expressed as organizational digital maturity. Previous studies identified that the level of digitalization is increasing, but, in many cases, due to lack of foundation, it is not aligned with the business strategy and/or supported by the organizational and technological infrastructures. There is a gap in existing models to provide practical starting-up steps to support the organizational digital readiness. A conceptual readiness framework for organizational digital readiness was tested through the analysis and reflection of four cases implemented by a Swedish manufacturing company. Findings point out that it is important to create a proper organizational foundation, a readiness, to ensure a company to evolve in digital maturity. That can be developed based on three main stages of change management practices. The tool can be used to identify the organizational readiness and thereby the gaps and thresholds necessary to overcome. This will enable companies to utilize the technology level necessary to increase cost and resource efficiency, and hence competitiveness. In addition, dimensions and a roadmap for organizational, digital, and smart readiness is presented. © 2020 The authors

  • Towards Digital Environmental Stewardship : the Work of Caring for the Environment in Waste Management
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. - 9781450391573 ; , s. 1-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses Digital Environmental Stewardship as an analytical framework that can help HCI scholarship to understand, design, and assess sociotechnical interventions concerned with sustainable waste management practices. Drawing on environmental studies, we outline key concepts of environmental stewardship - namely actors, capacity, and motivations - to unpack how different initiatives for handling waste are organised, both through grassroots and top-down interventions, and through varying sociotechnical configurations. We use these dimensions to analyse three different cases of waste management that illustrate how actions of care for the environment are ecologically organised, and what challenges might hinder them beyond -or besides- behavioural motivations. We conclude with a discussion on the orientation to action that the suggested framework provides, and its role in understanding, designing and assessing digital technologies in this domain. We argue that examining how stewardship actions fold into each other helps design sociotechnical interventions for managing waste from within a relational perspective.

  • Negotiating use : Making sense of mobile technology
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Personal and Ubiquitous Computing. - 1617-4909 .- 1617-4917. ; 5:2, s. 137-145
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is based on a study of the ways in which a group negotiated the use of a new mobile technology. The group was made up of ski instructors who, during a one-week ski trip, were equipped with a mobile awareness device called the Hummingbird. The group was studied using ethnomethodologically inspired qualitative methods, with the focus on the group members' different views of the Hummingbird's intended use. Negotiations of use occurred using two methods: talk and action. The users negotiated issues such as where and when to use the technology, and whether to consider the Hummingbird a work tool or a gadget for social events. Further, the empirical results clearly show how negotiations of new, mobile technology differ from stationary technology. © Springer-Verlag London Ltd.

  • A Distributional Semantic Online Lexicon for Linguistic Explorations of Societies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social Science Computer Review. - : SAGE Publications. - 0894-4393 .- 1552-8286. ; 41:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Linguistic Explorations of Societies (LES) is an interdisciplinary research project with scholars from the fields of political science, computer science, and computational linguistics. The overarching ambition of LES has been to contribute to the survey-based comparative scholarship by compiling and analyzing online text data within and between languages and countries. To this end, the project has developed an online semantic lexicon, which allows researchers to explore meanings and usages of words in online media across a substantial number of geo-coded languages. The lexicon covers data from approximately 140 language-country combinations and is, to our knowledge, the most extensive free research resource of its kind. Such a resource makes it possible to critically examine survey translations and identify discrepancies in order to modify and improve existing survey methodology, and its unique features further enable Internet researchers to study public debate online from a comparative perspective. In this article, we discuss the social scientific rationale for using online text data as a complement to survey data, and present the natural language processing-based methodology behind the lexicon including its underpinning theory and practical modeling. Finally, we engage in a critical reflection about the challenges of using online text data to gauge public opinion and political behavior across the world.

  • Building momentum: Scaling up change in community organizations
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. ; 2018-April
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Addressing calls in Sustainable HCI to scale up our work in HCI targeting sustainability, and the current knowledge gap of how to do this practically, we here present a qualitative study of 10 sustainability-oriented community organizations that are working to scale up their change making. They are all loosely connected to a local Transition network, meaning that they are aiming at transforming current practices in society, through local and practical action, to meet challenges related to climate change. We wanted to know how they try to scale up their change making, and what role ICT plays in enabling scaling up. The study contributes new insights about three stages of scaling up, in which ICT plays different roles. We conclude with implications for HCI for how to support community organizations in scaling up, while keeping values important for working toward a more resilient society.

  • A Security Architecture for 5G Networks
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - : IEEE. - 2169-3536. ; 6:17, s. 22466-22479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 5G networks will provide opportunities for the creation of new services, for new business models, and for new players to enter the mobile market. The networks will support efficient and cost-effective launch of a multitude of services, tailored for different vertical markets having varying service and security requirements, and involving a large number of actors. Key technology concepts are network slicing and network softwarisation, including network function virtualisation and software-defined networking. The presented security architecture builds upon concepts from the 3G and 4G security architectures but extends and enhances them to cover the new 5G environment. It comprises a toolbox for security relevant modelling of the systems, a set of security design principles, and a set of security functions and mechanisms to implement the security controls needed to achieve stated security objectives. In a smart city use case setting, we illustrate its utility; we examine the high-level security aspects stemming from the deployment of large numbers of IoT devices and network softwarisation.

  • CREATING A STRUCTURED MEETING ARENA FOR KNOWLEDGE SHARING
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The sixth Swedish Production Symposium. - 9789198097412
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to describe how to create and structure a meeting arena by combining organisation structure and information structure; this will be used in order to create an innovative and creative arena for knowledge sharing and problem solving within the company. The model is exemplified by four industrial case-studies. Results reveal that most of the companies do not have any standards for information- or knowledge sharing, most improvement potentials are seen in structuring and storing the right information (IS), aiming from tacit towards explicit knowledge (OS) and this could be done by structuring the questions in the OS-M-IS model and by creating innovative and creative meeting arenas.

  • Digitalisation of MEETings - from White-boards to SMART-boards
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271. ; 41, s. 1125-1130
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information is a vital resource in development activities of any business. These systems also play a very important role in the knowledge sharing of an organisation. In order to properly bridge over from the information system to the organisation system, the transformation process from data, via information, to knowledge becomes important to understand. A challenge is to create appropriate conditions in both the organization system and in the information system enhancing knowledge sharing among employees, and promote organizational learning. This paper will analyse an industrial example of weekly planning meetings for preventative maintenance, this will be illustrated in the OS-M-IS model i.e. were the information sharing exist in a current situation (whiteboards). A future situation of the same case will be tested and evaluated in a lab environment (with SMART boards and iObeya) as a first step.
