  • Indications of change in life perspective among women with breast cancer admitted to complementary care
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer Care. - OXFORD : BLACKWELL SCIENCE LTD. - 0961-5423 .- 1365-2354. ; 10:3, s. 192-200
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, qualitative content analysis was used in order to understand the reported changes of life perspective in interviews with 59 women with breast cancer who were admitted to complementary care. The aim of this research was to study women's perceived consequences as well as perceived causes of breast cancer and to explore aspects of importance to the women. The material was collected in semistructured interviews from women with breast cancer at different stages of the disease. The women received complementary care at an anthroposophic clinic in Sweden. Findings showed that these women's view of their relationships with others grew more valuable. Their self-confidence and experience of strength improved, and they regarded life as being more enriched. A change in their disposition towards becoming more fragile and low-spirited was experienced as a hardship by the women. Am interesting finding was that the patients described the aetiology of the disease from several interacting perspectives, which also affected their ideas of how to achieve wellbeing and health. The findings support the view that changes of both benefit and harm are present in the experience of breast cancer.

  • Approximations for the general block distribution of a matrix
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Theoretical Computer Science. - AMSTERDAM : ELSEVIER SCIENCE BV. - 0304-3975 .- 1879-2294. ; 262:1-2, s. 145-160
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The general block distribution of a matrix is a rectilinear partition of the matrix into orthogonal blocks such that the maximum sum of the elements within a single block is minimized. This corresponds to partitioning the matrix onto parallel processors so as to minimize processor load while maintaining regular communication patterns. Applications of the problem include various parallel sparse matrix computations, compilers for high-performance languages, particle in cell computations, video and image compression, and simulations associated with a communication network. We analyze the performance guarantee of a natural and practical heuristic based on iterative refinement, which has previously been shown to give good empirical results. When p2 is the number of blocks, we show that the tight performance ratio is Theta(rootp). When the matrix has rows of large cost, the details of the objective function of the algorithm are shown to be important, since a naive implementation can lead to a Ohm (p) performance ratio. Extensions to more general cost functions, higher-dimensional arrays, and randomized initial configurations are also considered. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

  • First Swedish Conference on Software Engineering Research and Practise
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is considered as a leading nation in modern IT business. The growth of software development business provides an opportunity to strengthen the software engineering research in Sweden even further. This conference is intended as a starting point for a national network on software engineering and provides opportunity to discuss the current situation in software engineering research. Besides that the conference present a forum for Ph. D. students to meet and exchange ideas.

  • A Tool for Binding Threads to Processors
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many multiprocessor systems are based on distributed shared memory. It is often important to statically bind threads to processors in order to avoid remote memory access, due to performance. Finding a good allocation takes long time and it is hard to know when to stop searching for a better one. It is sometimes impossible to run the application on the target machine. The developer needs a tool that finds the good allocations without the target multiprocessor. We present a tool that uses a greedy algorithm and produces allocations that are more than 40% faster (in average) than when using a binpacking algorithm. The number of allocations to be evaluated can be reduced by 38% with a 2% performance loss. Finally, an algorithm is proposed that is promising in avoiding local maxima.

  • An Allocation Strategy Using Shadow-processors and Simulation Technique
  • 2001
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficient performance tuning of parallel programs for multiprocessors is often hard. When it comes to assigning threads to processors there is not much support from commercial operating systems, like the Solaris operating system. The only known value is, in best case, the total execution time of each thread. The developer is left to the bin packing algorithm with no knowledge about the interactions and dependencies between the threads. The bin packing algorithm assigns, in the worst case, the threads to the processors such that the program will have the longest possible execution time. A simple example of such a program is shown. We present here a way of retrieving more information and a test mechanism that makes it possible to compare two different assignments of threads on processors also with regard to the interactions and dependencies between the threads. Also an algorithm is proposed that gives the best assignment of threads to processors in the case above where the bin packing algorithm gave the worst possible assignment. The algorithm uses shadow-processors and requires more processors than on the target machine during some allocation steps. Thus, a simulation tool like the one presented here must be used.

  • Implications of cavitation in individual grooves of spiral groove bearings
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part J, journal of engineering tribology. - BURY ST EDMUNDS : PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING PUBLISHING LTD. - 1350-6501 .- 2041-305X. ; 215:J5, s. 417-424
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pressure distribution in a flat spiral groove thrust bearing obtained from a straightforward solution of the Reynolds equation includes subatmospheric pressure in part of the grooved area, This is masked in the common theory based on the assumption of an infinite number of grooves. Furthermore, the negative contribution to the load capacity from this area is usually small, which may explain why the presence of subatmospheric pressure has not been given much attention in connection with these bearings. Subatmospheric pressure is, however, necessary for liquid-lubricated flat spiral groove thrust bearings of conventional design to work at all at low numbers of grooves, which in turn requires a non-zero cavitation pressure. Cavitation within individual grooves implies non-linearity in, for example, the relation between load capacity and rotational speed of the bearing and limits the obtainable load capacity. This is more pronounced and important to consider at low numbers of grooves (wide grooves) than at high numbers of grooves (narrow grooves), and it is difficult to determine for what number of grooves that reliable prediction of bearing performance can be expected. It depends on the actual value of the cavitation pressure and other parameters that are usually unknown or difficult to account for. To avoid this disadvantage a modified design of liquid-lubricated flat spiral groove thrust bearings is suggested.
