Critical Thinking in Scholarship: : Meanings, Conditions and Development

- The purpose of this thesis is to explore the phenomenon of critical thinking in scholarship as regards its meanings, conditions, and development using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach. This exploration takes its departure in ancient Greece, following a historical movement of the phenomenon up to present day perspectives on critical thinking, revealing a range of different meanings and conditions. Thus, the reader is invited to follow my synthetic meaning constitution of the phenomenon of critical thinking as it appears in different philosophical and educational texts. Through this gradual process of meaning constitution it is shown that the scholarly critical thinker is in one way or another concerned with abstract relationships, in order to either master, understand, or change the world. These underlying interests may, in turn, be derived from the critical thinker’s sense of responsibility towards God, nature, society, and humanity as a whole. It also appears that even though critical thinking in scholarship is traditionally framed within rational and principle based thinking, the development of the meaning of critical thinking is on its way to new dimensions. Besides rationality, other qualities of critical thinking are highlighted, such as reflective thinking, emotions, creativity, imagination, and intuition. Despite the fact that research on critical thinking has started to move in new directions, educational policy documents implicitly conceptualize critical thinking in traditional terms. This means that the phenomenon is captured within its own instrumentality, with no further concern for its possible ends. The same circumstance can be noted in relation to contemporary perspectives on critical thinking, which tend to focus on the process of critical thinking, since critical thinking is implicitly understood as an assurance of attaining normatively good ends. However, critical thinking is a phenomenon that is future oriented, involving its intention and possible ends. Against this background, it is therefore argued that critical thinking receives its most critical feature when intention, process and end constitute a constructive interrelated whole.

Protein S100B after cardiac surgery: An indicator of long-term anxiety?

- Objectives. The aim of the study was to assess long-term state and trait anxiety in cardiac surgical risk patients. Design. Thirty two patients with serum S100B > 0.3 µg/l 48 hours after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass were matched according to age, gender, type, date and length of surgery with 35 operated patients without elevated S100B. They completed Spielberger's Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Results. Patients with elevated S100B reported more state anxiety and trait anxiety. S100B was an independent predictor of both state and trait anxiety when controlling for perioperative variables. Conclusions. Patients with elevated S100B reported more anxiety 3–6 years after cardiac surgery. A postoperative blood sample can identify risk patients and facilitate appropriate follow-up.

- The introduction of a new corporate governance code in Sweden, modeled after prevailing Anglo-Saxon norms of corporate governance, offers the opportunity to investigate global regulatory convergence. Using the metaphor of regulatory space, this article analyzes the positions of the parties who submitted formal responses to the introduction of "The Swedish Code of Corporate Governance-A Proposal from the Code Group." While the globalization of financial markets might forecast unconditional acceptance of the proposed code by business and financial interests, the analysis of who made comments, and what was said, reveals three categorically distinct groups: Swedish business "insiders" connected to the existing institutional framework who opposed changes that would erode traditional division of functions, including collective responsibility for the actions of company boards; "outsiders" (i.e., foreign investors and more marginal Swedish investors) aligned with Anglo-Saxon internationalization of the markets who would change the system of corporate accountability; and the professions (i.e., auditors), who advocated for their professional interests. Of the three groups, Swedish business insiders were most successful in gaining support for their positions. Although international financial and political interests were key to the introduction of the Code in the first place, the article demonstrates how the dynamics of national (local) culture and power structures influence the transfer of regulatory law across jurisdictions.

Om social sårbarhet i samband med extraordinära händelser : En intervjustudie i 12 kommuner

- The aim of this report is to study how the authorities in twelve Swedish municipalities consider social vulnerability in disasters. The study is based on telephone interviews with ten officials responsible for safety and risk analysis and with ten officials responsible for social and psychological support after disasters. Three group interviews about the support for affected citizens after the storm Gudrun in southern Sweden in 2005, the Asian tsunami in 2004 and an accident with toxic gas in 2005 were conducted with municipal officials. The municipalities represent different kinds of cities and villages in Sweden. The measures in the municipalities were performed with expert knowledge to keep the legitimacy of the municipal authorities. In some municipalities the support was performed with empowerment and was adjusted to the needs of the affected. The officials considered elderly and other people who already have care or nursing, immigrants and those without social network, as socially vulnerable. None of the respondents mentioned homeless people, tourists or illegal immigrants. These groups are often mentioned in international research. Some of the respondents discussed how far the responsibility of the municipal authorities should extend. They also discussed how much responsibility citizens living in the countryside should have for their own safety for example in case of power failure. The question ought to bring up for public and political discussion. Another question is whether the authorities or the affected have the right to define social vulnerability.

Sårbar men inte ensam : en studie av några drabbades erfarenheter av Kemiraolyckan, tsunamin och stormen Gudrun

- The aim of this report is to illustrate how the affected after disasters have experienced their situation and the support from authorities. The study is based on interviews with 16 persons after the storm Gudrun in southern Sweden 2005, the Asian tsunami 2004 and an accident with toxic gas in a Swedish town 2005. The affected received most support, both practical and emotional, from their social networks. Conditions for that kind of support is the emotional energy and solidarity (Collins 2004) created in the network before the disaster. The affected after the toxic gas accident had a great need for information about the disaster. Most vulnerable were those who already were in need of care. After the tsunami the relatives in Sweden needed information and emotional support. They received support from their social network and the municipality crisis support. Some of them asked for support in dealing with meaning of grief and death. Their vulnerability is not so much social but existential about the great questions in human life. They also mentioned the differences between women and men. Men did not always share their emotional experiences in the counseling or in group discussions. The affected after the tsunami were offered counseling immediately but they had need for that kind of service even several months after the disaster. After the storm Gudrun people living in the countryside were affected by trouble in the infrastructure. They also lost forest, and their situation is characterized as economic vulnerability. After the storm the affected were able, for example, to do efforts to make the ways open again. They also could go and see elderly people living alone far away in the forests before the authorities could. Therefore, the municipality authorities have started a discussion how to cooperate with the farmer’s organisation in case of disasters.
