  • Integration of Self-Adaptive Physical-Layer Key Distribution and Encryption in Optical Coherent Communication
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 41:17, s. 5599-5606
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose and experimentally demonstrate a compatible physical-layer secure optical communication (PLSOC) system that integrates self-adaptive physical-layer key distribution (PLKD) and encryption (PLE) in optical coherent communication. Based on bit error rate difference of QAM signals mapped by asymmetric basis state Y-00 protocol, the secret key can be secretly exchanged over public fiber links without the pre-shared keys. Moreover, we perform a parameter self-adaptive strategy for practical and dynamic PLKD. The security of the key is evaluated in the case of a fiber-tapping attack. A secure hash algorithm, SHA3-512, is used to perform privacy amplification to obtain the virtually secure key. An error-free PLKD rate reaches 39.3 Kbits/s over 300km ultra-low loss fiber. We experimentally enable the integration of the proposed PLKD scheme and quantum noise stream cipher (QNSC) with a single wavelength, same system. Q factor penalty of the integration system compared to the QNSC system is 3.7dB (optical back-to-back) and 4.8dB (300km) respectively. By exploiting a common hardware platform, with the same wavelength, the proposed PLSOC system addresses the problem that PLKD and PLE are separately performed through independent optical fiber links or wavelengths. Since only digital signal processing is used, the scheme does not require extra hardware.

  • Inverse Gaussian Modeling of Turbulence-Induced Fading in Free-Space Optical Systems
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 29:10, s. 1590-1596
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose the inverse Gaussian distribution, as a less complex alternative to the classical log-normal model, to describe turbulence-induced fading in free-space optical (FSO) systems operating in weak turbulence conditions and/or in the presence of aperture averaging effects. By conducting goodness of fit tests, we define the range of values of the scintillation index for various multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) FSO configurations, where the two distributions approximate each other with a certain significance level. Furthermore, the bit error rate performance of two typical MIMO FSO systems is investigated over the new turbulence model; an intensity-modulation/direct detection MIMO FSO system with Q-ary pulse position modulation that employs repetition coding at the transmitter and equal gain combining at the receiver, and a heterodyne MIMO FSO system with differential phase-shift keying and maximal ratio combining at the receiver. Finally, numerical results are presented that validate the theoretical analysis and provide useful insights into the implications of the model parameters on the overall system performance.

  • 200-Gb/s Direct Modulation of a 50-GHz Class Laser with Advanced Digital Modulations
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 39:3, s. 845-852
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Directly modulated lasers (DML) dominate the short reach optical interconnect market. For years, the bandwidth of commercial DMLs has been limited to a level of 25 GHz, which can support a speed up to around 100 Gb/s via advanced modulations like Nyquist-shaped 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4), carrier-less amplitude phase (CAP) modulation, subcarrier multiplexing, and discrete multitone (DMT). To scale with the capacity evolution of interconnect applications, it is in urgent demand to develop DMLs operated at 50G class and even beyond. In this article, we exploit a newly designed 50G-class short-cavity distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser, called the two-κ DBR laser, and demonstrate its capability of supporting 200 Gb/s per wavelength direct modulation and direct detection transmissions. Combining high-speed electronics with the 50G-class DML, we demonstrate a variety of advanced digital modulations including Nyquist-shaped 100-GBaud PAM-4, 80-GBaud PAM-8, and 50-GHz DMT signals, with the maximum net bit rate of 236 Gb/s. The DML exhibits an ultra-low chirp parameter of 1.0, which enables isolator-free operation and dispersion-tolerant transmission over tens of kilometers at O-band.

  • High-Resolution Strain/Temperature Sensing System Based on a High-Finesse Fiber Cavity and Time-Domain Wavelength Demodulation
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 27:13, s. 2477-2481
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A high-resolution strain/temperature sensing system based on a fiber Bragg grating-Fabry-Perot cavity (FBG-FPC) and a wavelength-swept single-longitudinal-mode laser diode (modulated by a sawtooth signal) is proposed. The high-finesse (similar to 627) FBG-FPC formed by two uniform FBGs of high reflectivity (similar to 99.5%) is used both as a strain/temperature sensor and a FPC with ultranarrow (similar to 0.12 pm) transmission bands. Using a photodetector to detect the transmissive light of the laser diode through the FBG-FPC, wavelength demodulation is achieved by mapping wavelength measurement to time measurement. Both strain sensing and temperature sensing with a resolution of 0.11 mu epsilon and 0.014 degrees C, respectively, have been demonstrated.

  • An Energy Efficient 56 Gbps PAM-4 VCSEL Transmitter Enabled by a 100 Gbps Driver in 0.25 µm InP DHBT Technology
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 34:21, s. 954-4964
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Datacenters demand higher speed VCSEL-based optical interconnects at low power consumption. As a potential technology enabler, this paper presents a wide bandwidth and energy efficient multilevel PAM VCSEL driver implemented in an InP 0.25 μm double heterojunction bipolar transistor (DHBT) technology. The operational bandwidth of the driver is verified and error-free electrical data transmission up to 56 Gbps PAM-2 and 100 Gbps PAM-4 is demonstrated at a driver energy consumption less than 2 pJ/bit. The driver is integrated and tested with an in-house fabricated 850 nm VCSEL. Error-free 56 Gbps PAM-4 optical transmission at a transmitter energy consumption of 3.7 pJ/bit is demonstrated without equalization. This is the highest data rate reported for an integrated PAM-4 modulated VCSEL transmitter, while being the most energy efficient above 40 Gbps operation. Moreover, the VCSEL driver offers a pre-emphasis feature at PAM-2 operation for improved link throughput and receiver sensitivity.

  • Transmitter optimization for PS-QAM signal in high spectral efficiency metro-transmission
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; , s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) brings unprecedented flexibility to future optical networks. However, PCS combined with higher-order modulation formats and higher symbol rates puts more demands on the transmitter. For metro-transmission with high spectral efficiency (SE), transmitter impairments are responsible for a major portion of the system constraints. To address this issue, in this work we study the impact of transmitter impairments on probabilistically shaped quadrature amplitude modulation (PS-QAM) signals. First, we investigate the impact of transmitter impairments and radio frequency (RF) amplifier noise on the optimum shaping factor and the modulation depth within a fiber link. Then, we explore how generalized mutual information (GMI) and the shaping factor are affected by the noise from the transmitter. Next, we first jointly optimize the arcsine swing and the clipping ratio, in order to mitigate the transmitter impairments for the PS-QAM signal, when the modulation depth, the noise from the transmitter, the noise from the fiber optical channel, and the shaping factor are fixed. Then, we verify its validity for various configurations of transmission system. The optimized parameters primarily depend on the noise from the transmitter and turn out to be insensitive to the noise from the fiber optical link and the shaping factor. Finally, we experimentally verify the optimization strategy with PS-256QAM in back-to-back (B2B) transmission.

  • Low-Power 400-Gbps Soft-Decision LDPC FEC for Optical Transport Networks
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 34:18, s. 4304-4311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present forward error correction systems based on soft-decision low-density parity check (LDPC) codes for applications in 100–400-Gbps optical transport networks. These systems are based on the low-complexity “adaptive degeneration” decoding algorithm, which we introduce in this paper, along with randomly-structured LDPC codes with block lengths from 30 000 to 60 000 bits and overhead (OH) from 6.7% to 33%. We also construct a 3600-bit prototype LDPC code with 20% overhead, and experimentally show that it has no error floor above a bit error rate (BER) of 10−15 using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based hardware emulator. The projected net coding gain at a BER of 10−15 ranges from 9.6 dB at 6.7% OH to 11.2 dB at 33% OH. We also present application-specific integrated circuit synthesis results for these decoders in 28 nm fully depleted silicon on insulator technology, which show that they are capable of 400-Gbps operation with energy consumption of under 3 pJ per information bit.

  • Modulation Format Independent Joint Polarization and Phase Tracking for Coherent Receivers
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 13:14, s. 3354-3364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 1983-2012 IEEE. The state of polarization and the carrier phase drift dynamically during transmission in a random fashion in coherent optical fiber communications. The typical digital signal processing solution to mitigate these impairments consists of two separate blocks that track each phenomenon independently. Such algorithms have been developed without taking into account mathematical models describing the impairments. We study a blind, model-based tracking algorithm to compensate for these impairments. The algorithm dynamically recovers the carrier phase and state of polarization jointly for an arbitrary modulation format. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, having a fast convergence rate and an excellent tolerance to phase noise and dynamic drift of the polarization at low complexity, which make the algorithm a strong candidate for future optical systems.

  • Compact Microring Resonator With 2 x 2 Tapered Multimode Interference Couplers
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 27:21, s. 4878-4883
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Compact microring resonator devices are realized by using a small SU-8 polymer strip waveguide that has an SU-8 polymer core (n similar to 1.573), an SiO2 buffer (n similar to 1.445), and an air cladding. Due to the high index contrast of the optical waveguide, a small bending radius (similar to 150 mu m) is used for the MRR. To enhance the coupling between the access optical waveguides and the microring, 2 x 2 multimode interference couplers are used. The measured spectral response of the through port shows a high extinction ratio of over 15 dB and a 3-dB bandwidth of about 0.38 nm (corresponding to a moderate Q-value of similar to 4500).

  • Deeply etched SiO2 ridge waveguide for sharp bends
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Lightwave Technology. - 0733-8724 .- 1558-2213. ; 24:12, s. 5019-5024
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A deeply etched SiO2 ridge waveguide including the buffer, core, and cladding is presented for realizing sharp bends. The present SiO2 ridge waveguide has a strong confinement at the lateral direction, while it has a weak confinement at the vertical direction. Due to the strong confinement, a sharp bend (with a very small bending radius of about 10 mu m) is obtained for an acceptable bending loss. A detailed analysis of the loss in a bent waveguide is given by using a finite-difference method. In order to reduce the transition loss, a narrow bending section with an optimal lateral offset is used. A low leakage loss is obtained by using wide straight waveguides, and linear tapers are used to connect the wide straight section and narrow bent sections.
