Declining hip fracture burden in Sweden 1998-2019 and consequences for projections through 2050

- We aimed to estimate the absolute and age-standardized number of hip fractures in Sweden during the past two decades to produce time trends and future projections. We used nationwide register data from 1998 to 2019 and a validated algorithm to calculate the annual absolute and age-standardized number of incident hip fractures over time. The total hip fracture burden was 335,399 incident events over the 22 years, with a change from 16,180 in 1998 to 13,929 in 2019, a 14% decrease. One decade after the index hip fracture event, 80% of the patients had died, and 11% had a new hip fracture. After considering the steady growth of the older population, the decline in the age-standardized number of hip fractures from 1998 through 2019 was 29.2% (95% CI 28.1-30.2%) in women and 29.3% (95% CI 27.5-30.7%) in men. With a continued similar reduction in hip fracture incidence, we can predict that 14,800 hip fractures will occur in 2034 and 12,000 in 2050 despite doubling the oldest old (>= 80 years). Without an algorithm, a naive estimate of the total number of hip fractures over the study period was 539,947, with a second 10-year hip fracture risk of 35%. We note an ongoing decline in the absolute and age-standardized actual number of hip fractures in Sweden, with consequences for future projections.

- Using the relative expression levels of two SNIP alleles of a gene in the same sample is an effective approach for identifying cis-acting regulatory SNPs (rSNPs). In the current study, we established a process for systematic screening for cis-acting rSNPs using experimental detection of Al as an initial approach. We selected 160 expressed candidate genes that are involved in cancer and anticancer drug resistance for analysis of All in a panel of cell lines that represent different types of cancers and have been well characterized for their response patterns against anticancer drugs. Of these genes, 60 contained heterozygous SNPs in their coding regions, and 41 of the genes displayed imbalanced expression of the two cSNP alleles. Genes that displayed Al were subjected to bioinformatics-assisted identification of rSNPs that alter the strength of transcription factor binding. rSNPs in 15 genes were subjected to electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and in eight of these genes (APC, BCL2, CCND2, MLH1, PARP1, SLIT2, YES1, XRCC1) we identified differential protein binding from a nuclear extract between the SNIP alleles. The screening process allowed us to zoom in from 160 candidate genes to eight genes that may contain functional rSNPs in their promoter regions.

Analysis of pluvial flood damage costs in residential buildings : A case study in Malmö

- Pluvial flood damage to residential buildings causes a significant part of direct tangible flood losses. In this study, we investigate the non-hazard variables and sewer system types in relation to damage costs in the city of Malmö, Sweden. A comprehensive data set of around 1000 records of direct damage to residential buildings from a cloudburst event on 31 August 2014 in Malmö, Sweden has been analysed at property scale with no lumping together of data. The results show that properties connected to combined sewer systems are much more exposed to pluvial flood damage than properties connected to separated sewer systems, with the ratio of the number of claims being close to three. The analysis of building-specific variables shows no clear statistical relationships to the damage costs. To further the understanding of damage costs caused by urban pluvial flooding, it is necessary to extend the group of explanatory variables to include information about the socio-economic background of households, the actual value of assets in basements and the precautionary measures taken by house owners.

Systemic Inequity in Urban Flood Exposure and Damage Compensation

- Urban flooding is a growing concern in Northern Europe. While all countries in this region invest substantial resources into urban flood risk management, all property owners have unequal opportunity to have their flood risk managed. This paper presents the notion of equity in the urban flood risk management, focusing on urban flood exposure and compensation after sewage surcharge on the 31 August 2014 cloudburst over Malmö in Sweden. All damage claims and the procedures assessing them were analysed based on the type of sewer system (combined or separated) that affected the properties. The results demonstrated considerable systemic inequity in both flood exposure and damage compensation. The owners of properties connected to combined systems were four times more likely to make a damage claim, while having their damage claims approved just over half as often, compared with owners of properties connected to separated sewage systems. Considering the multifaceted nature of both inequities and their possible resolution, current praxis is not sufficient for the management of future urban drainage systems; not only concerning changing climatic conditions but also concerning social conditions

Urban flood damage claim analyses for improved flood damage assessment

- Urban flood damage leads to major costs for private house owners, insurance companies, and water and wastewater utilities. Analysis of flood damage claims can be used to improve the understanding of the details of flood damage characteristics and reasons for drainage system failures. However, few studies have used data of this kind to investigate urban flood characteristics. We examined 3113 damage claim cases over 30 years (1992–2019) for the city of Malmö, Sweden. We quantified the distribution and frequency of both major and minor flood damages over this period. Our analysis showed that most floods occur in August, but we could not find any significant trend in the count of damage claims between 1992 till 2019. The main drivers of flood damages were rainfall and failure mechanisms in the drainage system. In total, 24.5% of properties suffered from repeated flood damages, 44% originating from combined sewer system connection and 17% from the separated sewer system. This highlights the importance of sewer system types in flood damage claims. In addition, there was an uneven claim count between insurance companies and owners per event. About 42% of insurance company claims were not accompanied by the owner's deductible claims. Our results highlight the need to further investigate the reason behind this difference and ways for better future planning to minimize the damage from flood events.

- In order to prevent relapse into criminality, it is important to understand what precedes criminal behavior. Two earlier studies found deficits in mentalizing ability to be related to violent and criminal actions. Mentalizing refers to the ability to make human behavior predictable and meaningful by inferring mental states (thoughts, feelings, etc.) as explaining behavior. In this study, mentalizing ability was assessed by rating 42 Adult Attachment Interviews with young male offenders with the Reflective Functioning (RF) scale. In addition, specific mentalizing ability about their crimes was assessed, as well as psychopathy traits (Psychopathy Checklist, Screening Version [PCL: SV]) and alexithymia (Toronto Alexithymia Scale [TAS]). Results suggest impaired mentalizing in criminal offenders. Examples of anti- and prementalizing reasoning about crimes are presented. RF scores were not correlated with the PCL:SV or TAS.
