  • Universal fine-structure eraser for quantum dots
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : OPTICAL SOC AMER. - 1094-4087. ; 26:19, s. 24487-24496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We analyze the degree of entanglement measurable from a quantum dot via the biexciton-exciton cascade as a function of the exciton fine-structure splitting and the detection time resolution. We show that the time-energy uncertainty relation provides means to measure a high entanglement even in presence of a finite fine-structure splitting when a detection system with high temporal resolution is employed. Still, in many applications it would be beneficial if the fine-structure splitting could be compensated to zero. To solve this problem, we propose an all-optical approach with rotating waveplates to erase this fine-structure splitting completely which should allow obtaining a high degree of entanglement with near-unity efficiency. Our optical approach is possible with current technology and is also compatible with any quantum dot showing fine-structure splitting. This bears the advantage that for example the fine-structure splitting of quantum dots in nanowires and micropillars can be directly compensated without the need for further sample processing.

  • New lower bound techniques for dynamic partial sums and related problems
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: SIAM Journal on Computing. - 0097-5397. ; 32:3, s. 736-753
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the complexity of the dynamic partial sum problem in the cell-probe model. We give the model access to nondeterministic queries and prove that the problem remains hard. We give the model access to the right answer +/-1 as an oracle and prove that the problem remains hard. This suggests which kind of information is hard to maintain. From these results, we derive a number of lower bounds for dynamic algorithms and data structures: We prove lower bounds for dynamic algorithms for existential range queries, reachability in directed graphs, planarity testing, planar point location, incremental parsing, and fundamental data structure problems like maintaining the majority of the prefixes of a string of bits. We prove a lower bound for reachability in grid graphs in terms of the graph's width. We characterize the complexity of maintaining the value of any symmetric function on the prefixes of a bit string.

  • Locality-aware workflow orchestration for big data
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. ; , s. 62-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The development of the Edge computing paradigm shifts data processing from centralised infrastructures to heterogeneous and geographically distributed infrastructure. Such a paradigm requires data processing solutions that consider data locality in order to reduce the performance penalties from data transfers between remote (in network terms) data centres. However, existing Big Data processing solutions have limited support for handling data locality and are inefficient in processing small and frequent events specific to Edge environments. This paper proposes a novel architecture and a proof-of-concept implementation for software container-centric Big Data workflow orchestration that puts data locality at the forefront. Our solution considers any available data locality information by default, leverages long-lived containers to execute workflow steps, and handles the interaction with different data sources through containers. We compare our system with Argo workflow and show significant performance improvements in terms of speed of execution for processing units of data using our data locality aware Big Data workflow approach.
