  • Steady state analysis of HVDC grid with Wind Power Plants
  • 2017
  • swepub:Mat_doctoralthesis_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • The idea of building a multi-terminal, even a meshed HVDC grid in the North Sea, that can inter-connect surrounding nations, is being discussed widely. Such a system is expected to be realised in steps through the interconnection of wind power plants and electricity markets. Hence, the aim of this work is to accomplish steps to realise the idea through modelling, investigating and quantifying economical and the technical aspects of building the grid. Particular attention is placed on quantifying economically optimum sizing of system components and establishing economic connection requirements of the markets. In order to fulfil part of the aim, wind speed modelling procedures, that can be used to simulate temporally and specially correlated time series wind speed, are proposed. A special contribution in one of the modelling procedures is the introduction of frequency decomposition in the procedure. The procedures are later used as inputs to simulate time series wind power which is used in the economical analysis of building the grid in steps. In addition, a steady state model of a control strategy, which is based on local primary controllers and a central secondary controller, is also presented. Moreover, based on the investigated cases, it is verified that the optimum size of a VSC HVDC transmission system, connecting two electricity markets having a pre-defined exchange power data, is approximately equal to the absolute mean of the exchange. The result is determined for a cable length of 300 km and the optimum cable size decreases by about 5% for every 300 km increases in cable length. Furthermore, it is quantified that the investment cost of a VSC HVDC transmission system is 3 €/MWh for a cable length of 300 km. For every 300 km increase in cable length, the investment cost increases by about 2 €/MWh.Furthermore, a minimum slope difference requirement, between the marginal costs of markets, for an economical inter-connection, is established. The established requirement focuses on the cases where the net exchange power between the markets, during some time interval, is close to zero. Based on the studied cases, it is determined that, for a given distance between the markets, the minimum slope difference, that could make a feasible investment, decays exponentially as the size of the system increases. For example, for two markets which are 300 km apart and have a maximum demand of 20 GW each, the minimum angle between the markets should be 0.006. For 100% increase in cable length, the minimum angle also increases by the same percentage.

  • record:In_t: International Journal of Product Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1477-9056 .- 1741-8178. ; 18:3-4, s. 274-285

    • There is an emerging consensus that business models are systemic and transcend firm boundaries. Yet, existing research on Business Model Innovation (BMI) challenges focus almost exclusively on intra-firm factors such as capabilities, cognition and leadership. We explore challenges related to BMI by instead drawing on an open systems perspective on organisations. In particular, we argue that the systemic and boundary-spanning nature of business models imply that firms are forced to act under conditions of interdependence and restricted freedom, since they do not have executive control over their surrounding network. Consequently, we propose that suitable managerial solutions include the development of shared knowledge, appropriability regimes based on trust, network stability and the alignment of heterogeneous interests.

  • Approach for handling heterogeneous goods in intermodal freight networks - revisited

    • At the 9th WCTR in Seoul, we outlined six approaches for coping with heterogeneous goods in freight networks and gave common real-world examples of Logistics Service Providers’ actions. This article is a follow-up that re-uses the conceptual framework created in 2001 to develop the theory further and to analyse how the approaches are used in real-world network operations in 2013. We have found indications that European transport of heterogeneous goods has become increasingly complex and certainly more complicated over the studied period, not least of all due to the growth in transport network size and scope. Some of the tricks used by Logistics Service Providers to cope with the heterogeneous goods are de-scribed, characterised, segmented, and analysed to arrive at relatively generalised knowledge. Finally, a case study shows how a Swedish Logistics Service Provider has changed its consolidation network to encompass logistically demanding pharmaceuticals in its general flow.

  • Transport service triads in supply networks
  • 2021
  • swepub:Mat_doctoralthesis_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • This doctoral thesis deals with the embeddedness of transport services in supply networks. The exchange of transport services depends on the exchange of goods since exchange of goods generates demand for transport services. The transport service triad is introduced to explore connections among business relationships involved in the exchange of goods and in the exchange of transport services. The transport service triad involves three firms and four generic roles: the buyer of goods, the supplier of goods, the buyer of transport services, and the supplier of transport services. The theoretical framework takes point of departure in the industrial network approach and in the literature on triads. The industrial network approach highlights three interrelated network layers – activities, resources, and actors – and is used to capture interdependencies in supply networks. The triad is the smallest unit of analysis to analyse connectedness among business relationships. The triad is used to explore embeddedness in and of triads. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to explore embeddedness in and of transport service triads in supply networks. A qualitative case study approach is used to explore how firms organise and manage interdependencies related to transport services in supply networks and implications of connectedness between business relationships. The empirical data stem from actors involved in transport service triads and adjacent actors relating to the transport service triad. The thesis builds on five appended papers. This thesis shows how triads in general, and the transport service triad in particular, are critical units of analysis to understand how business relationships are connected in supply networks. In addition, this thesis highlights various types of embeddedness. This thesis adds to our knowledge of (1) triads in supply networks, (2) the intricacies of a supply network context leaping from dyads to triads to the broader network, (3) how firms organise transport services and handle the interdependencies that exist in supply networks, (4) the implications of connected business relationships, and (5) consequences on transport performance.

  • Access management for road hauliers and rail operators in intermodal freight terminals
  • 2020
  • swepub:Mat_doctoralthesis_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • A pivotal element in the transport industry, intermodal freight transport, is rather complex due to the numerous transport modes and actors involved. Terminal operators in intermodal freight transport face major challenges to provide seamless flows of containers via their terminals. Seamless flows are achievable by bridging gaps between large-scale transport operators (e.g. shipping lines) and small-scale transport operators (e.g. road hauliers and rail operators). Effective access processes can not only bridge those gaps but also contribute to decreasing turnaround times for trucks and trains. By applying the access processes, small-scale transport operators can receive access to specific resources in terminals. An effective access process can be achieved when transport resources (e.g. trucks and truck drivers) can be managed together with terminal resources (e.g. straddle carriers and straddle carrier drivers). In this thesis, such management is termed access management, defined as managing the process by which actors access resources at terminals. Guided by that concept, the thesis seeks to increase the understanding of how access management for road hauliers and rail operators in intermodal freight terminals can contribute to decreasing turnaround times for trucks and trains. The thesis is a compilation of five papers reporting studies that involved literature reviews, interviews, focus groups, participant observations and time measurements. Whereas the literature reviews focused on the topics of access management and information exchange, the collected data were analysed by implementing several analytical frameworks developed for the thesis. The results of using those frameworks clarified how effective access to resources at intermodal freight terminals can be managed, especially by explaining four dynamics: (1) how different information services can contribute to decreasing turnaround times for trucks and trains, (2) how those services can affect activity performance and resource utilisation, (3) how the required and most relevant attributes of information can be exchanged in real time among actors involved and (4) how and when such attributes need to be automatically collected and exchanged. Following from those results, the chief finding is that terminal operators can effectively manage transport and terminal processes, as well as decrease turnaround for trucks and trains, by using access management services that allow exchanging information in real time. From the empirical findings of the studies conducted, six propositions are formulated and justified.

    • Prior research highlights the vital role of information technology (IT) for innovation in firms. In this paper, we draw on the knowledge-based view of the firm to investigate how search in external knowledge sources and information technology for knowledge absorption jointly influence process innovation performance. Our model is tested on a nine-year panel (2003–2011) of Swiss firms from a wide range of manufacturing industries. Using instrumental variables, and disaggregating by type of IT, we find that data access systems and network connectivity hold very different potential for the effective absorption of external knowledge, and the subsequent realized economic gains from process innovation. Against the backdrop of today’s digital transformation, our findings demonstrate how firms should coordinate strategies for sourcing external knowledge with specific IT investments in order to improve their innovation performance.
