    • Refugees have moved into the spotlight of public debate in Europe and North America, where they are targeted by multiple welfare state interventions. This volume analyses the tensions that emerge within the strong welfare states of Northern Europe when faced with an increased immigration of protection-seeking people. Examining the encounter between refugees and the welfare states, this book explores the daily strategies and experiences of newly settled groups and the role of media discourses and welfare policies in shaping those experiences.Building on both textual analyses and ethnographic fieldwork in welfare institutions, asylum centres, and refugee communities, this volume provides an in-depth understanding of the complex realities faced by refugees: deterrence and categorisation, struggle and success, mobility and stagnation. As social phenomena, Northern Europe's asylum systems and integration programmes must be understood in the context of the bureaucratisation of everyday life.

    • This chapter explores feminist performances during and after the so-called Arab Spring, primarily focusing on Tunisia and Egypt. The Arab Spring stands as a distinct milestone demarcating a definite “before” and an “after.” As a pivotal event, it posed new challenges and contexts for feminist activists. While the toppling of old regimes initially held promises of ushering in a more open and liberated society, the aftermath often contradicted these aspirations, manifesting as escalated repression. Feminist organizations faced crackdowns with several groups enduring asset freezes or outright bans. Consequently, new modes of organization and feminist resistance emerged. Notably, this chapter examines the surge in significance of digital platforms for feminist activism. The role of social media, acknowledged for its influence in the initial successes of the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings, underwent scrutiny, criticized for potentially undermining the valour of physical protests. However, the altered media landscapes in present-day Tunisia and Egypt compared to the pre-2011 era, remain undeniable. The uprisings catalysed not only a novel political milieu, but also imparted valuable lessons in effectively harnessing social media and digital tools for driving change. Beyond its undeniable importance, which paved a significant milestone, lay the lessons acquired in leveraging these technologies to bring about impactful transformations.

    • School districts in the United States and around the world are increasingly moving away from traditional neighborhood school assignment, in which pupils attend closest schools to their homes. Instead, they allow families to choose from schools within district boundaries. This creates a market with parental demand over publicly-supplied school seats. More frequently than ever, this market for school seats is cleared via market design solutions grounded in recent advances in matching and mechanism design theory. The literature on school choice is reviewed with emphasis placed on the trade-offs among policy objectives and best practices in the design of admissions processes. It is concluded with a brief discussion about how data generated by assignment algorithms can be used to answer contemporary empirical questions about school effectiveness and policy interventions.
