  • Tensor-valued diffusion magnetic resonance imaging in a radiotherapy setting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physics and imaging in radiation oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 2405-6316. ; 24, s. 144-151
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and purposeDiagnostic information about cell density variations and microscopic tissue anisotropy can be gained from tensor-valued diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These properties of tissue microstructure have the potential to become novel imaging biomarkers for radiotherapy response. However, tensor-valued diffusion encoding is more demanding than conventional encoding, and its compatibility with MR scanners that are dedicated to radiotherapy has not been established. Thus, our aim was to investigate the feasibility of tensor-valued diffusion MRI with radiotherapy dedicated MR equipment.Material and methodsA tensor-valued diffusion protocol was implemented, and five healthy volunteers were scanned with different resolutions using conventional head coil and radiotherapy coil setup with fixation masks. Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) was evaluated to assess the risk of signal bias due to rectified noise floor. We also evaluated the repeatability and reproducibility of the microstructure parameters. One patient with brain metastasis was scanned to investigate the image quality and the transferability of the setup to diseased tissue.ResultsA resolution of 3×3×3 mm3 provided images with SNR>3 for 93% of the voxels using radiotherapy coil setup. The parameter maps and repeatability characteristics were comparable to those observed with a conventional head coil. The patient evaluation demonstrated successful parameter analysis also in tumor tissue, with SNR>3 for 93% of the voxels.ConclusionWe demonstrate that tensor-valued diffusion MRI is compatible with radiotherapy fixation masks and coil setup for investigations of microstructure parameters. The reported reproducibility may be used to plan future investigations of imaging biomarkers in brain cancer radiotherapy.

  • Health effects of reduced occupational sedentary behaviour in type 2 diabetes using a mobile health intervention : a study protocol for a 12-month randomized controlled trial—the ROSEBUD study
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Trials. - : BioMed Central. - 1745-6215. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Short-term trials conducted in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) showed that reducing sedentary behaviour by performing regular short bouts of light-intensity physical activity enhances health. Moreover, support for reducing sedentary behaviour may be provided at a low cost via mobile health technology (mHealth). There are a wide range of mHealth solutions available including SMS text message reminders and activity trackers that monitor the physical activity level and notify the user of prolonged sitting periods. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of a mHealth intervention on sedentary behaviour and physical activity and the associated changes in health in adults with T2DM.Methods: A dual-arm, 12-month, randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be conducted within a nationwide Swedish collaboration for diabetes research in primary health care. Individuals with T2DM (n = 142) and mainly sedentary work will be recruited across primary health care centres in five regions in Sweden. Participants will be randomized (1:1) into two groups. A mHealth intervention group who will receive an activity tracker wristband (Garmin Vivofit4), regular SMS text message reminders, and counselling with a diabetes specialist nurse, or a comparator group who will receive counselling with a diabetes specialist nurse only. The primary outcomes are device-measured total sitting time and total number of steps (activPAL3). The secondary outcomes are fatigue, health-related quality of life and musculoskeletal problems (self-reported questionnaires), number of sick leave days (diaries), diabetes medications (clinical record review) and cardiometabolic biomarkers including waist circumference, mean blood pressure, HbA1c, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides.Discussion: Successful interventions to increase physical activity among those with T2DM have been costly and long-term effectiveness remains uncertain. The use of mHealth technologies such as activity trackers and SMS text reminders may increase awareness of prolonged sedentary behaviour and encourage increase in regular physical activity. mHealth may, therefore, provide a valuable and novel tool to improve health outcomes and clinical management in those with T2DM. This 12-month RCT will evaluate longer-term effects of a mHealth intervention suitable for real-world primary health care settings.

  • Octave illusion elicited by overlapping narrowband noises.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. - : Acoustical Society of America (ASA). - 1520-8524 .- 0001-4966. ; 129:5, s. 3213-3220
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The octave or Deutsch illusion occurs when two tones, separated by about one octave, are presented simultaneously but alternating between ears, such that when the low tone is presented to the left ear the high tone is presented to the right ear and vice versa. Most subjects hear a single tone that alternates both between ears and in pitch; i.e., they hear a low pitched tone in one ear alternating with a high pitched tone in the other ear. The present study examined whether the illusion can be elicited by aperiodic signals consisting of low-frequency band-pass filtered noises with overlapping spectra. The amount of spectral overlap was held constant, but the high- and low-frequency content of the signals was systematically varied. The majority of subjects perceived an auditory illusion in terms of a dominant ear for pitch and lateralization by frequency, as proposed by Deutsch [(1975a) Sci. Am. 233, 92-104]. Furthermore, the salience of the illusion increased as the high frequency of the content in the signal increased. Since no harmonics were present in the stimuli, it is highly unlikely that this illusion is perceived on the basis of binaural diplacusis or harmonic binaural fusion.

  • Early Neoproterozoic magmatism and Caledonian metamorphism recorded by the Mårma terrane, Seve Nappe Complex, northern Swedish Caledonides
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of the Geological Society. - : Geological Society of London. - 0016-7649 .- 2041-479X. ; 180:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Petrology, geochronology and bulk-rock chemistry are combined to investigate the early Neoproterozoic magmatismand Cambrian–Ordovician metamorphism in the northern Swedish Caledonides. This work includes several lithologies of theMårma terrane in the Seve Nappe Complex exposed in the Kebnekaise region. U–Pb zircon geochronology yielded crystallizationages of 835 ± 8 Ma for a mylonitic orthogneiss, 864 ± 3 Ma for the Vistas Granite and 840 ± 7 Ma for an intruded granitic dyke, whereas a gabbro and a granodiorite intrusion gave U–Pb zircon crystallization ages of 856 ± 3 Ma and 850 ± 1 Ma, respectively.U–Pb monazite dating of the mylonitic orthogneiss gave an upper intercept age of 841 ± 7 Ma and a lower intercept age of443 ± 20 Ma. Pressure–temperature estimates derived for the mylonitic orthogneiss reveal metamorphic peak-pressure and peaktemperatureof 10.5–11.75 kbar and 550–610°C and 7.4–8.1 kbar at 615–675°C, respectively.Metamorphic pressure–temperatureestimates for the Vistas Granite yield 6.5–7.5 kbar at 600–625°C. Whole-rock chemistry coupled with U–Pb geochronologyindicates that bimodal magmatism was related to attempted rifting of Rodinia between 870 and 840 Ma.

  • Delay Performance in IP Routers
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The main goals of the paper are towards an understanding of the delay process in best-effort Internet for both non-congested and congested networks. A dedicated measurement system is re-ported for delay measurements in IP routers, which follows specifications of the IETF RFC 2679. The system is using both passive measurements and active probing. Dedicated application-layer software is used to generate UDP traffic with TCP-like characteristics. Pareto traffic models are used to generate self-similar traffic in the link. The reported results are in the form of several impor-tant statistics regarding processing delay of a router, router delay for a single data flow, router delay for more data flows as well as end-to-end delay for a chain of routers. We confirm results reported earlier about the fact that the delay in IP routers is generally influenced by traffic characteristics, link conditions and, at some extent, details in hardware implementation and different IOS releases. The delay in IP routers usually shows heavy-tailed characteristics. It may also occasionally show extreme values, which are due to improper functioning of the routers.

  • Matching Multi-Fractal Process Parameters Against Real Data Traffic
  • 2002
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent analyses of real data/internet traffic indicate that data traffic exhibits long-range dependence as well as self-similar or multi-fractal properties. By using mathematical models of Internet traffic that share these properties we can perform analytical studies of network traffic. This gives us an opportunity to analyse potential bottlenecks and estimate delays in the networks. Processes with multi-fractal properties can be modeled by multiplying the output of Markov Modulated Rate Processes (MMRP) [1] each defined by four parameters. The MMRP are easily used in stochastic fluid flow modeling. This model is also suited for analysis of other traffic types e.g. VoIP and thus, it allows for integration of different traffic types, i.e. time-sensitive voice traffic with best-effort data traffic. Using this model we can calculate performance parameters for each individual stream that enters the system/model. In this paper we show how to construct a multi-fractal process that is matched to measured data from MMRP sub processes.

  • Modelling of Ethernet Traffic on Multiple Timescales
  • 2004
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ethernet is one of the most common link layer technologies, used in local area networks, wireless networks and wide area networks. There is however a lack of traffic models for Ethernet that is usable in performance analysis. In this paper we use such a model. The model operates on matching multiple moments of the bit rate at several timescales. In order to match the model parameters to measured traffic, five methods have been developed. We use this to model three different links; the BCpOct89 Bellcore trace, an Internet access link and an ADSL link. Our results show that, as the number of sources present on an Ethernet link grows, the model becomes better and less complex.

  • Obtaining Reliable Bit Rate Measurements in SNMP-Managed Networks
  • 2002
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Simple Network Management Protocol, SNMP, is the most widespread standard for Internet management. As SNMP stacks are available on most equipment, this protocol has to be considered when it comes to performance management, traffic engineering and network control. However, especially when using the predominant version 1, SNMPv1, special care has to be taken to avoid erroneous results when calculating bit rates. In this work, we evalute six off-the-shelf network components. We demonstrate that bit rate measurements can be completely misleading if the sample intervals that are used are either too large or too small. We present solutions and work-arounds for these problems. The devices are evaluated with regards to their updating and response behavior.
