  • Front- and backstage in "social media"
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: XVII ISA World Congress of Sociology, Sociology on the Move, Gothenburg, Sweden 11 - 17 July, 2010. - : International Sociological Association (ISA). ; , s. 367-367
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Excessive generosity with information about one's private life or the private lives of others, known as ”oversharing”, appears to be an oft-noted phenomenon in the context of ”new” me- dia. I have previously studied this phenomenon in connection with mobile phone conversa- tions in public places. After having eavesdropped on, or maybe rather overheard, such con- versations more systematically, I offered a number of different explanations for the intimacy that occasionally results from these conversations: Were such mobile phone users to be re- garded as inconsiderate individualists, or as communicating exhibitionists, or as absorbed communicators? It is against this background that I am studying, in this paper, oversharing in the context of social media such as Facebook, and attempting to answer the question: What is it in ”social media” as media and in the communicative situation of the person using them that constitutes front- and backstage and the border dividing them? The paper consists of a com- parative analysis of face-to-face interaction and interaction in social media in which I use Goffman's terms ”front- and backstage” and ”expressions given and expressions given off.” The two forms of interaction are also compared based on Goffman's system model of com- munication, which consists of eight different system requirements and system constraints. The results of the comparison between face-to-face interaction and interaction in social media has to do with differences in the natures of the two forms of interaction. When it comes to the communicative situation in which social media users find themselves, it appears to be para- doxical: on the one hand, the users can present themselves in a highly controlled manner while, on the other hand, the risk of oversharing appears to be great.

  • Ga Implantation in a MgO-based Magnetic Tunnel Junction With Co60Fe20B20 Layers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IEEE transactions on magnetics. - 0018-9464 .- 1941-0069. ; 47:1, s. 151-155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Co60Fe20B20-based tunneling magnetoresistance multilayer stack with an MgO barrier has been exposed to 30 keV Ga ions at doses corresponding to ion etching and metal deposition in a focused ion beam (FIB) instrument, to study the applicability of these processes to magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) fabrication. MTJs were fabricated and irradiated to investigate how the exposures affected their coercivity and magnetoresistance. Elemental depth profiles, acquired using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, showed that Ga gathered in and around the two Co60Fe20B20 layers. Correlated with the results of the magnetic measurements, this Ga presence was found to cause a reduction of magnetoresistance and an increase in coercivity. Quantitatively, a dose of 1014 Ga+cm-2 reduced the magnetoresistance by 60%, whereas a dose of 1015 Ga+cm-2 reduced the magnetoresistance by 67% and also increased the coercivity by 2 mT and changed the dipole coupling between the sensing and the pinning layers by 1.6 mT. The latter was attributed to an imbalance in the synthetic antiferromagnetic structure, where the stack's Ru spacer served as an implantation barrier. The magnetoresistance was lost at a dose of 1016 Ga+cm-2. Annealing reduced the content of Ga around the magnetic layers but also caused diffusion of Cu from one of the layers in the stack. Apart from the observation and explanation of implantation damages in the multilayer, this work concludes on the applicability of FIB processes for prototyping of MTJs.

  • Generic monadic constructs for embedded languages
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: IFL 2011, the 23rd Symposium on Implementation and Application of Functional Languages.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We present a library for generic monadic constructs for em- bedded languages. It is an extension of Syntactic, a Haskell library for defining and processing generic abstract syntax. Syntactic works best to implement languages based on pure, side effect free, expressions. The presented extension allows the pure expressions to also contain controlled side effects, enabling efficient representation of expressions that rely on destructive updates for efficiency.

  • Government Value Paradigms : Bureaucracy, New Public Management and eGovernment
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181 .- 1529-3181. ; 27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are different interpretations of which core values eGovernment build on and promote. Some scholars see eGovernment as a direct follower to New Public Management (NPM), and as such supporting and promoting values and principles from the business sector. Others see eGovernment as a promoter of bureaucratic values supporting and promoting the values of traditional weberian ideal bureaucracy. The main issue in this paper is management strategy for public administration. Three examples of such management strategies are examined and compared: traditional bureaucracy, New Public Management and eGovernment. When investigating these strategies it is necessary to distinguish between strategy as idea and strategy in action. Core values of the management strategies are reconstructed and used as a lens through which a case study of eGovernment is analyzed. The implemented eGovernment-solution comprise values from both NPM and bureaucracy. Neither bureaucracy nor NPM alone supply the core values for eGovernment as a practical management strategy. The paper concludes with a dialectical structure where Bureaucracy is the thesis, NPM the anti-thesis and eGovernment the practical synthesis.

  • Non-stem cell origin for oligodendroglioma
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Cancer Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 1535-6108 .- 1878-3686. ; 18:6, s. 669-682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Malignant astrocytic brain tumors are among the most lethal cancers. Quiescent and therapy-resistant neural stem cell (NSC)-like cells in astrocytomas are likely to contribute to poor outcome. Malignant oligodendroglial brain tumors, in contrast, are therapy sensitive. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and detailed developmental analyses, we demonstrated that murine oligodendroglioma cells show characteristics of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) and are therapy sensitive, and that OPC rather than NSC markers enriched for tumor formation. MRI of human oligodendroglioma also suggested a white matter (WM) origin, with markers for OPCs rather than NSCs similarly enriching for tumor formation. Our results suggest that oligodendroglioma cells show hallmarks of OPCs, and that a progenitor rather than a NSC origin underlies improved prognosis in patients with this tumor.
