  • Problems and limitations in studies on screening for language delay.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Research in Developmental Disabilities. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-3379 .- 0891-4222. ; 31:5, s. 943-950
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study discusses six common methodological limitations in screening for language delay (LD) as illustrated in 11 recent studies. The limitations are (1) whether the studies define a target population, (2) whether the recruitment procedure is unbiased, (3) attrition, (4) verification bias, (5) small sample size and (6) inconsistencies in choice of "gold standard". It is suggested that failures to specify a target population, high attrition (both at screening and in succeeding validation), small sample sizes and verification bias in validations are often caused by a misguided focus on screen positives (SPs). Other limitations are results of conflicting methodological goals. We identified three such conflicts. One consists of a dilemma between unbiased recruitment and attrition, another between the comprehensiveness of the applied gold standard and sample size in validation and the third between the specificity of the gold standard and the risk of not identifying co-morbid conditions.

  • Health care professionals´perceptions of health promotion with preschool children.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Healthcare. - : SciEdu. - 2377-7338 .- 2377-7346. ; 2:1, s. 128-138
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ABSTRACT Background: The growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) all over the world calls for a change in peoples’ lifestyles. One way to prevent NCDs is to work with health promotion. The burden of communicable diseases (CDs), however, is still high and resources are limited. Studies suggest that promotion of health should start early in life and in cooperation between preschool teachers and parents. Also health care workers should be included in such work. The aim of the present study was to explore health care professionals’ experiences and their reflections on health promotion in relation to children’s health in two different Western Cape settings, South Africa. Methods: Data was collected in two focus group discussions (FGDs) with twelve health care professionals from health clinics situated in two different settings; one upper-middle income urban suburb and one peri-urban township. Data was analysed with latent content analysis. Results: The findings are presented in four categories and twelve subcategories. The focus group (FG) participants had a holistic view on health and they talked about children’s health from a health promotion perspective where they saw children’s health as affected by an interplay between family, societal and structural factors. Further they saw several possibilities and expressed ideas about how to work from a health promotion perspective. They had a positive attitude to working intersectorally and interdisciplinary and believed that they could contribute to such a work. However, the cooperation with doctors and social service must be improved in order to succeed. Conclusions: The organizers of the health care sector should see to that health professionals have the possibility to work according to health promotion principles. Also the health care workers themselves must engage more actively in the work by considering the attitudes of the staff, the parents and grandparents and develop cultural awareness and sensibility. Key Words: Child health, Determinants of health, Focus group discussions, Health promotion, Health care professionals, Intersectoral work, Interdisciplinary work.

  • Conservation of historical landscapes: What signifies ‘successful’ management?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Landscape Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0142-6397 .- 1469-9710. ; 43:5, s. 735-748
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017 Landscape Research Group Ltd This paper focuses on the management of an industrial heritage site in Sweden, which local stakeholders and heritage planners have claimed to be successful. This status of excellence is investigated in relation to the general, county-wide applied heritage planning. The results show that key factors for successful management of the industrial heritage site are not related only to conservation work, but also to personal engagement, sense of responsibility, and well-being among participants. However, heritage planners generally lack methods to address immaterial values and socio-economic benefits of engaging in heritage activities, resulting in a separation between physical and communal aspects of heritage planning. The results highlight the issue of professional legitimacy and the challenges for heritage planners to address regional policy objectives, such as finding ways to utilise historic landscapes in destination-driven strategies and to simultaneously support civil engagement in heritage-related issues.

  • The Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale: Self-reported competence among nursing students on the point of graduation
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education Today. - : Elsevier BV. - 0260-6917 .- 1532-2793. ; 36, s. 165-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: International organisations, e.g. WHO, stress the importance of competent registered nurses (RN) for the safety and quality of healthcare systems. Low competence among RNs has been shown to increase the morbidity and mortality of inpatients. Objectives: To investigate self-reported competence among nursing students on the point of graduation (NSPGs), using the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale, and to relate the findings to background factors. Methods and participants; The NPC Scale consists of 88 items within eight competence areas (CAs) and two overarching themes. Questions about socio-economic background and perceived overall quality of the degree programme were added. In total, 1086 NSPGs (mean age, 28.1[20-56] years, 87.3% women) from 11 universities/university colleges participated. Results: NSPGs reported significantly higher scores for Theme I "Patient-Related Nursing" than for Theme II "Organisation and Development of Nursing Care". Younger NSPGs (20-27 years) reported significantly higher scores for the CAs "Medical and Technical Care" and "Documentation and Information Technology". Female NSPGs scored significantly higher for "Value-Based Nursing". Those who had taken the nursing care programme at upper secondary school before the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programme scored significantly higher on "Nursing Care", "Medical and Technical Care", "Teaching/Learning and Support", "Legislation in Nursing and Safety Planning" and on Theme I. Working extra paid hours in healthcare alongside the BSN programme contributed to significantly higher self-reported scores for four CAs and both themes. Clinical courses within the BSN programme contributed to perceived competence to a significantly higher degree than theoretical courses (932% vs 875% of NSPGs). Summary and conclusion: Mean scores reported by NSPGs were highest for the four CAs connected with patient-related nursing and lowest for CAs relating to organisation and development of nursing care. We conclude that the NPC Scale can be used to identify and measure aspects of self-reported competence among NSPGs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Structural Racism in Sweden: Framing Attitudes towards Immigrants through the Diversity Barometer Study (2005–2022)
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social Sciences - Socialiniai. - : MDPI. - 1392-0758. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents a theoretical framework for analysing the findings derived from the Diversity Barometer, a longitudinal study that collected data on immigration and diversity-related topics in Swedish society from 2005 to 2022. This article examines attitudes towards immigrants and migration in Sweden and how the historical context of Swedish race relations and structural racism shapes these attitudes. Specifically, the article focuses on attitudes regarding immigrants’ social rights and responsibilities, workplace diversity, cultural diversity, and spatial segregation. Our findings and analysis demonstrate how structural racism manifests itself through attitudes towards individuals with immigrant backgrounds in Sweden. Research has also revealed the pervasive nature of racial discrimination across various aspects of Swedish society, contributing to a divided society based on racial markers. However, the findings also show complexity in how Swedes’ attitudes toward immigrants are to be understood when they do not follow a simple horizontal division between Swedes and immigrants. Instead, it appears as an intricate vertical division where immigrants, their culture and their labour are accepted, albeit in a subordinate manner.

  • Prospective teachers’ initial conceptions about pupils’ understanding of science and mathematics
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Teacher Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0261-9768 .- 1469-5928. ; 31:3, s. 257-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Earlier reports have shown that prospective teachers' conceptions about teaching science to a high degree are resistant and do not change substantially during the teacher-training programme. In our investigation we elucidate the prospective teachers' initial conceptions about pupils' understanding of science and mathematics. We applied 'The Lesson Preparation Method' and used a phenomenographic approach in order to reveal the range of conceptions that the prospective teachers hold. A third of the prospective teachers did not consider pupils' conceptions when planning lessons. The rest of the 32 participants expressed awareness; some of the prospective teachers even referred to subject-specific teaching experience. Also regarding the prospective teachers' conceptions about pupils' knowledge and beliefs, as well as about pupils' difficulties, there was a significant diversity. By raising these issues about pedagogical content knowledge the prospective teachers' conceptions can be extended and developed during the education.

  • Fritidspedagog/lärare i fritidshem – en profession i ständig rörelse
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Forskning pågår, 31 oktober, 2018.

  • Afterschool Programs and Leisure-Time Centres: Arenas for Learning and Leisure
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: World Leisure Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0441-9057 .- 1607-8055 .- 2333-4509. ; 51:2, s. 116-129
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract Afterschool programs in the United States and leisure-time centres in Sweden could emphasize children’s leisure as well as be of importance to children’s learning. However, in both cases, the association to leisure is mostly ignored and the acceptance is not widely practiced. Instead, other discourses that partly are more related to the field of education serve as a guide for programming in afterschool programs and leisure-time centres. The authors present the argument that afterschool programs and leisure-time centres could be more associated with leisure activities and presented in a new way with the guidance from the field of leisure that also could be beneficial for educational research. Existing definitions of leisure, and their possible consequences for the activities, are discussed in terms of the framework of afterschool programs and leisure-time centres. The authors argue that knowledge grounded in understanding the importance of leisure and its potential to develop and satisfy people could be a means to develop both the activities and the current work of the staff in afterschool programs and leisure-time centres.
