  • Bebyggelsemönster i medelhavsområdet: en studie av medinan i Fes ställd i relief mot Siena|
  • 1995
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is an analysis and comparative study of medieval Mediterranean urban patterns. With urban patterns is meant the arrangement of houses and public spaces with special regard to the relations between them. The thesis contains four parts. Previous research on Muslim cities is described and commented in the first part. A difference between research before and after 1960 is noted. The Medina of Fes is discussed in the second part. In an historical background sketch the foundation of the Medina and its development are presented. The spatial analysis shows that the physical structure of the Medina is based on a primary pattern unit of a square courtyard house with a closed, inward-turned physical structure. A number of these primary units are grouped around a cul de sac to form a second-level community unit; a number of these latter form a quarter. The quarters are adjacent and close to each other which means that the Medina as a whole can be regarded as a complex physical and social unit surrounded with the city walls. In a comparable approach the physical and social structure of Siena is studied. The primary units here are the casa corte, which is similar to the courtyard of the Medina, and the casa a schiera which is a filehouse without any comparative physical form in the medina. These two different primary units engendered two types of building patterns, one in the city centre where courtyard units are grouped around a central square, and the other one in the periphery of the city formed by the alignment of the filehouses along the street. An attempt to compare the physical and social units in the Medina and Siena is made in the fourth part of this thesis. The primary units, the community units, the quarters and the cities are compared. This comparative study shows that the similarities between the Medina and Siena are much more apparent on the social level and on the level of the smaller physical units, i.e. the habitat, than between the larger social and physical composition of the quarters.

  • From Harlem to Copenhagen : African American authors in Europe
  • 2000
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper deals with images of Europe in African American fiction from the 1920’s. What are the implications for an African American author of including a European episode in her or his fiction? More specifically, I will look at how the European setting affects the representations of race and identity in African American women’s fiction from the inter war years. Special focus is placed on the works of Jessie Fauset’s There Is Confusion (1924) and Nella Larsen’s Quicksand (1928). In their different ways, these novels highlight many of the larger issues that are characteristic of the 1920’s, such as primitivism versus civilization, questions of cultural ‘belonging,’ the black artists’ relationship to modernity, and the establishment of an African American artistic tradition. I argue that the representations of Europe are symbolic geographies, allowing for criticism of social and historical conditions in America. Through the fictional encounters with European life, Nella Larsen and Jessie Fauset provide us with a lens through which we can see what we call “Western civilization.” The travels in Europe become a way of interrogating the role of the African American in the construction of this civilization. Performance is hereby an important trope, which relates to the authors’ understandings of culture, race and historical agency.

  • Probabilistic Flood Maps to support decision-making : Mapping the Value of Information
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Water resources research. - 0043-1397 .- 1944-7973. ; 52:2, s. 1026-1043
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Floods are one of the most frequent and disruptive natural hazards that affect man. Annually, significant flood damage is documented worldwide. Flood mapping is a common preimpact flood hazard mitigation measure, for which advanced methods and tools (such as flood inundation models) are used to estimate potential flood extent maps that are used in spatial planning. However, these tools are affected, largely to an unknown degree, by both epistemic and aleatory uncertainty. Over the past few years, advances in uncertainty analysis with respect to flood inundation modeling show that it is appropriate to adopt Probabilistic Flood Maps (PFM) to account for uncertainty. However, the following question arises; how can probabilistic flood hazard information be incorporated into spatial planning? Thus, a consistent framework to incorporate PFMs into the decision-making is required. In this paper, a novel methodology based on Decision-Making under Uncertainty theories, in particular Value of Information (VOI) is proposed. Specifically, the methodology entails the use of a PFM to generate a VOI map, which highlights floodplain locations where additional information is valuable with respect to available floodplain management actions and their potential consequences. The methodology is illustrated with a simplified example and also applied to a real case study in the South of France, where a VOI map is analyzed on the basis of historical land use change decisions over a period of 26 years. Results show that uncertain flood hazard information encapsulated in PFMs can aid decision-making in floodplain planning.

  • Alienation och Arbete. Unga behovsanställdas villkor i den flexibla kapitalismen
  • 2020
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to investigate how flexible capitalism, drawing from the case of on-call employees, influences the ability to control life and work and affects relationships with other people, both inside and outside work; and to investigate how this can be understood in terms of alienation. A subsidiary aim that emerges from this investigation is to develop existing alienation theories in a way that enables them to be used to understand human existence under flexible capitalism. Alienation is understood as a process in which something that should be connected has lost its connection: it is a relation of relationlessness. This raises three questions: How can we decide what a relation “ought” to be? What relations are being alienated and what is causing these relations to become relationless? In the thesis I use an immanent perspective to identify the “ought” in the studied context: the capitalist mode of production. For value to exist it is required that man is, as Marx puts it in Capital, “the free proprietor of his own labour-capacity, hence of his own person”. Thus, there is a premise of self-determination in capitalism. A premise which, because of man’s need to create value and the fact that her activity must be subordinated to the value logic, cannot be realized. This applies to everyone in our society, capitalists and labourers alike, and alienates man from her activity, herself, others and her product. This is understood as abstract alienation. On a concrete and specific level the control of how to reach this value-goal and to what extent this affects the individual’s life may differ depending on how value production takes place and the individual’s position in production. I call this concrete alienation and it can be understood as the concrete expression of the abstract alienation. In this way, alienation is neither a purely structural nor a purely subjective phenomenon. It can be both. Following changes in the accumulation regime the concrete alienation has transformed during the last decades, which is expressed in the on-call employees’ situation. Based on an analysis of 17 in-depth interviews I conclude that that their subjective motifs of being in the employment differ and their employment is objectively shaped differently. The objective and subjective dimensions are the basis for understanding on-call employees’ alienation at a concrete level. Drawing from Jaeggi’s qualified subjectivism I argue that since a premise of capitalism is self-determination, the individual must have a say in their situation and experience. If an individual feels that she can’t control her life she is thus alienated from the premise of self-determination. If she feels that she can control her life but this feeling is not realised, meaning that there is no objective possibility to control or steer her life, there is no self-determination and thus alienation persists even though it is not perceived. The result tells us that on-call employment can be used both as a way to increase the freedom and self-determination over one’s life and hinder it, it can instrumentalise life and work in a specific way, and it can hinder the control over social relations, both in and outside of work. As a result, even though they all experience abstract alienation, their level of concrete alienation differs.
