• Human Resource Development in Restaurants in Western Sweden – A Human Capital Theory Perspective
• 2024
• Ingår i: Journal of Human Resources in Hospitality & Tourism. - : Routledge. - 1533-2845 .- 1533-2853. ; 23:2, s. 289-314
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• While the Swedish hospitality industry is experiencing substantial growth, this growth comes with a cost, as the industry has neither the knowledge nor the incentive to pay enough attention to human resource development. This continuous growth will therefore impose challenges and erect obstacles once the industry begins expanding again after the pandemic. Insofar as attracting, engaging and retaining talent are the biggest challenges, it might be time to go back to the drawing board and identify a possible shift to an employee-based approach to developing businesses. Based on interviews with managers and owners representing 28 predominantly seasonal restaurants in the Swedish coastal region of Bohuslän, this study identifies current obstacles and challenges facing the Swedish restaurant industry with a clear focus on the concept of human capital. The results of the study clearly indicate that human resource development (HRD) is by far the most critical factor in addressing staffing issues and overcoming the difficulty involved in attracting, engaging, and retaining not only enough staff but more importantly staff with basic knowledge, experience, and interest. The aim here is to initiate a shift to a more direct and sustained focus on human capital in the hospitality industry, from the perspective of human capital theory, by highlighting some of the most highly relevant factors associated with this perspective. According to an employee-driven restaurant analysis (EDRA) approach, a shortage of human capital could pose the biggest obstacle to further development, as restaurants find it increasingly difficult to attract, engage and retain employees for all positions.

• Efficacy of the antibacterial envelope to prevent cardiac implantable electronic device infection in a high-risk population
• 2022
• Ingår i: Europace. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1532-2092. ; 24:12, s. 1973-1980
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• AimsInfection is a serious complication of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) therapy. An antibiotic-eluting absorbable envelope has been developed to reduce the infection rate, but studies investigating the efficacy and a reasonable number needed to treat in high-risk populations for infections are limited. Methods and resultsOne hundred and forty-four patients undergoing CIED implantation who received the antibacterial envelope were compared with a matched cohort of 382 CIED patients from our institution. The primary outcome was the occurrence of local infection, and secondary outcomes were any CIED-related local or systemic infections, including endocarditis, and all-cause mortality. The results were stratified by a risk score for CIED infection, PADIT. The envelope group had a higher PADIT score, 5.9 ± 3.1 vs. 3.9 ± 3.0 (P < 0.0001). For the primary endpoint, no local infections occurred in the envelope group, compared with 2.6% in the control group (P = 0.04), with a more pronounced difference in the stratum with a high (>7 points) PADIT score, 0 vs. 9.9% (P = 0.01). The total CIED-related infections were similar between groups, 6.3% compared with 5.0% (P = 0.567). Mortality after 1600 days of follow-up did not differ between groups, 22.9 vs. 26.4%, P = 0.475.ConclusionOur study confirms the clinical efficacy of an antibacterial envelope in the prevention of local CIED infection in patients with a higher risk according to the PADIT score. In an effort to improve cost–benefit ratios, ration of use guided by the PADIT score is advocated. Further prospective randomized studies in high-risk populations are called for.

• Atomic data and theoretical X-ray spectra of Ge-like through V-like W ions
• 2014
• Ingår i: Atomic Data and Nuclear Data Tables. - : Elsevier BV. - 0092-640X. ; 100:2, s. 577-649
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The atomic structure and spectra of ten tungsten ions have been calculated using the Flexible Atomic Code. The calculations yield energy levels, radiative lifetimes, spectral line positions, transition probability rates, and oscillator strengths for the tungsten ions isoelectronic to germanium, W42+, through vanadium, W51+. Collisional-radiative models for high-temperature, low-density plasmas have been implemented to produce line emissivities for X-ray transitions in the 1-4 keV (3-12 angstrom) spectral interval. The Ge-like through V-like W ions are important in nuclear fusion research where their spectra may provide diagnostic information on magnetically confined plasmas. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. • Can the environment be an inferior good? A theory with context-dependent substitutability and needs
• 2019
• Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
• Theoretical models often assume the environment to be a normal good, irrespective of one’s income. However, a priori, nothing prohibits an environmental good from being normal for some individuals and inferior for others. We develop a conceptual framework in which private consumption and an environmental public good act as substitutes or complements for satisfying different needs. Subsequently, the environment can switch between normal and inferior depending on one’s income and environment. If the environment is inferior for some range of income, then the willingness to pay for environmental preservation becomes non-monotonic, thereby having implications for benefit transfers.

• The potential of smoking cessation programmes and a smoking ban in public places: comparing gain in life ex-pectancy and cost effectiveness.
• 2011
• Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health. - : SAGE Publications. - 1651-1905 .- 1403-4948. ; 39:8, s. 785-796
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• BACKGROUND: Interventions aimed at reducing the number of smokers are generally believed to be cost effective. However as the cost of the interventions should be paid up front whereas the gains in life years only appear in the future--the budgetary consequences might be a barrier to implementing such interventions. AIMS: The aim of the present paper was to assess the long-term cost effectiveness as well as the short-term (10 years) budget consequences of cessation programmes and a smoking ban in enclosed public places. METHODS: We develop a population-based Markov model capable of analyzing both interventions and assess long-term costs effectiveness as well as short-term budgetary consequences and outcome gains. The smoking cessation programme model was based on data from the Danish National Smoking Cessation Database (SCDB), while the model of the smoking ban was based on effect estimates found in the literature. RESULTS: On a population level the effect of a smoking ban has the largest potential compared with the effect of smoking cessation programmes. Our results suggest that smoking cessation programmes are cost saving and generate life-years, whereas the costs per life-year gained by a smoking ban are 40,645 to 64,462 DKK (100 DKK = €13.4). These results are conservative as they do not include the healthcare cost saving related to reduced passive smoking. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that smoking cessation programmes and a smoking ban in enclosed public places both in the short term and the long term are cost-effective strategies compared with the status quo.

• Home abortion - experiences of male involvement
• 2010
• Ingår i: European journal of contraception & reproductive health care. - London : Informa Plc. - 1362-5187 .- 1473-0782. ; 15:4, s. 264-270
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• OBJECTIVE: To gain knowledge about the male partner's experience of being present during an induced home abortion. METHODS: Twenty-three couples, whose male partner had been present when the woman aborted at home, were interviewed one to two weeks post-abortion. RESULTS: Each of the men supported his partner in her decision to have a home abortion, as this gave him the possibility of being near and of caring for her needs on the expulsion day. All the men were present and all their partners confirmed that they had been supportive. Half the men had been anxious prior to the expulsion, but most considered that their experiences during the expulsion had been 'easier than expected' and their dominant feeling was one of relief. CONCLUSIONS: Abortion is an important life event. When taking place at home, it increases the possibility for the couple to share the experience. Sharing an abortion may have a positive impact on those men who lack a sense of responsibility regarding reproductive issues, such as contraceptive use. This could facilitate society's efforts to involve men as a target group in this field. Designing an abortion policy that caters for the needs of both partners is a challenge.

• From Culture to Text to Interactive Visualization of Wine Reviews
• 2013
• Ingår i: Knowledge Visualization Currents. - London : Springer. - 9781447143024 ; , s. 85-110
• Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
• On the basis of a large corpus of wine reviews, this chapter proposes a range of interactive visualization techniques that are useful for linguistic exploration and analysis of lexical, grammatical and discursive patterns in text. Our visualization tool allows linguists and others to make comparisons of visual, olfactory, gustatory and textual properties of different wines for example from different countries, from different grape varieties, or from different vintages. It also supports the visual exploration of sensory descriptions as well as confirmatory investigations of text and discourse. Besides a more technical discussion of our visualization approach, we also provide a more general overview of text and corpus visualizations and highlight linguistic challenges that we had to address during the development phase.
