  • The use of English in institutional and business settings : an intercultural perspective
  • 2007
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • This book explores the intercultural problems related to the widespread use of English in written and oral communication by native and non-native speakers in institutional and business settings. Each chapter looks at a different set of issues emerging from the confrontation of cultures across national, institutional and organizational discourse communities, taking an intercultural or cross-cultural approach. The focus is on workplace settings, both in institutional and business contexts (e.g. politics, public services, media, international corporate communication, advertising, business negotiations, etc.). The theme is all the more interesting today not only in consideration of the sheer magnitude of this phenomenon and its capillary spread, but above all on account of the pervasive penetration of English into professional and workplace contexts as a communication language also for local/internal communication. The complexity of intercultural communication as an object of research is reflected in the variety of the topics explored, the range of settings investigated, and the diversity of methodological approaches taken.

  • The Call of *Yaqtulu : The Central Semitic Imperfective, Nominalisation and Verbal Semantics in Cyclical Flux
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Ugarit-Forschungen. - 0342-2356. ; 50 (2019), s. 435-451
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article discusses the discrepancy between the *yaqattal and *yaqtulu imperfectives (the former known from East Semitic, Ethiosemitic and Modern South Arabian and the latter from Central Semitic). It argues that original nominalised phrases such as “he is a killer” came about based on an earlier “he is one who killed”, and that these were subsequently reinterpreted as imperfectives. A comparison is made with Modern South Arabian “insubordination”, and further lines are drawn into the attested development of Biblical Hebrew and Ugaritic and to the problems such a development imply for exegetical work. Arguments con-cerning the cladistics of West Semitic are also offered, and the possibility of an initial rise of *yaqtulu already in Proto-West Semitic is cautiously supported.

  • The discourse functions of overspecified anaphoric expressions in Biblical Hebrew narrative : Genesis 12-24 as a test case
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Semitic Studies. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0022-4480 .- 1477-8556. ; 65:2, s. 275-296
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Biblical Hebrew, as in other languages, anaphoric reference is often overspecified; that is, an anaphoric noun (lexical anaphora) is used in a place where the inflection of the verb (inflectional anaphora) would be a sufficient indicator as to who is being referred to. The present study investigates the function of overspecified subject referents in Biblical Hebrew narrative discourse. It is found that overspecification can be associated with three main textual phenomena, namely, events of general relevance, subject referent initiative, and various textual discontinuities. The function of indicating subject referent initiative lies behind many of the occurrences of lexical anaphora at the beginning of episodic units, but it may also occur within episodes. The different functions of overspecification and inflectional anaphora arise as a result of the different mental processes triggered by lexical and deictic anaphora, whereby the former evokes general, context-independent knowledge about the referent and impedes the access to the information contained in the previous clause, whereas the latter makes it immediately available.

  • The Language of the Slave Spirits in Brazilian Umbanda : Memories of Ancestral Dignity
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Shackled Sentiments. - Lanham : Lexington Books. - 9781498585989 - 9781498585996 ; , s. 177-194
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the speech of slave spirits, or pretos-velhos (‘old Blacks’), that we meet in Umbanda communities in Brazil. Such spirits are understood as old African slaves who may possess initiated mediums during the state of trance in rituals. Pretos-velhos represent the memory of slavery by showing a linguistic behavior associated with their condition of enslaved Africans brought from Africa to Brazil: a particular way of speaking, as if an old speaker of African languages who had learned Portuguese as a second language. Earlier studies discuss linguistic characteristics that distinguish the speech of pretos-velhos from other varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, and compare their speech with literary representations of the speech of Africans and their descendants in Brazil, affirming that the contact between speakers of Portuguese and African languages can explain the emergence of specific linguistic features. This chapter will analyze both recordings with one preto-velho called Pai João (‘Father John’) gathered by the author during fieldwork in an Umbanda community in 2005, and written representations of the speech of pretos-velhos in books with Umbanda ritual songs. The findings indicate that, at some point in time, the linguistic features represented in the speech of pretos-velhos were characteristic of all speakers of African languages who learned Portuguese as a second language informally in Brazilian colonial settings. Moreover, the use of certain phonetic and grammatical features in the speech of pretos-velhos has contributed to the characterization of the linguistic behavior of native speakers of African languages who acquired Portuguese as a second language. Some of the features are also present in the so-called Brazilian vernacular Portuguese (and may even be explained by contact with African languages), other signal the speech of a foreigner. The oral representations can be used to complement the limited written data available to us on the speech of the slave population. Finally, we believe that in sacred spaces, where the agents or owners of discourse belong to Afro-Brazilian religious communities, specific or innovative linguistic features seem to recreate African ancestral dignity. After all, the pretos-velhos, spirits of the light, born in Africa, are always ready to help people who often come to Umbanda temples the consult them.

  • Natural Suffering : Viola, Psellos, and a Christian Ecology of Pain
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ikon - Journal of the iconographic studies. - : Brepols Publishers NV. - 1846-8551. ; 12, s. 239-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The installation by Bill Viola, Martyrs, depicts four suffering individuals without showing any outward pain. The onslaught of the four elements makes them victims, but their calm acceptance of their fate and unruffled composure raises the question of what, if anything, the viewer is meant to experience. Through some contemporary commentators, I raise the questions of Viola's choice of depicting a gore-less martyrdom and its effects. By retracing both the elemental aspects and the concept of painlessness in Christian writings, I attribute Viola's choice not only to a syncretistic outlook but also to a strand of representation compatible with a Christian world-view. Nevertheless, differences remain, and the question of whether real suffering can be depicted without outward signs is key for understanding the evolution of a medieval aesthetics, as well as for appreciating Viola's modern take on death.

  • At the Threshold of the Sacred: Paratextual Retranslation and Institutional Mediation through Footnotes in a Roman Catholic Edition of the New Testament
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Paratexts in Translation: Nordic Perspectives. - Berlin : Frank & Timme. - 9783732907779 ; , s. 57-92
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter analyzes the footnotes of Katolsk Studiebibel (“Catholic Study Bible”), a Roman Catholic edition of the New Testament in Swedish, published in 2020. The New Testament text of this edition was originally translated by a state-sponsored committee which worked on a translation of the Bible into Swedish from the early 1970s onwards. The intended readership of this translation was the entire Swedish population, regardless of religious belief. As a consequence, the translation would not consider any specific confessional interpretations of the biblical texts. By contrast, Katolsk studiebibel aims to do precisely this, as it mediates a distinctly Catholic understanding of the New Testament texts. This is not done by linguistically retranslating the texts, but by adding a footnote apparatus to the original translation (including its original footnotes). The Catholic footnote apparatus thereby reframes the original translation, as well as the underlying source texts. In the present chapter, this phenomenon is termed paratextual retranslation. It is furthermore suggested that the different understandings of the New Testament texts in, respectively, Katolsk studiebibel and the original translation are an outcome of different institutional frameworks: these affect the paratextual features of the two editions, and their paratexts in turn work to convey the different institutional frameworks.

  • Mer än filologi : Textkritiska positioner i Svenska Folkbibeln och Bibel 2000
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Svensk Exegetisk Årsbok. - : Svenska exegetiska sällskapet. - 1100-2298 .- 2001-9424. ; 87, s. 282-307
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the paper is to investigate the text-critical positions of two contemporary Old Testament (OT) translations into Swedish, Svenska Folkbibeln and Bibel 2000, and how these positions are affected by various contextual factors. An overarching idea of the paper is that the text-critical position of any given translation is as much a reflection of theological and ideological as philological concerns. In the paper, this is examined with respect to four verses from different OT books, Gen 49:10, Deut 32:8, Is 7:14, and Psa 22:17. Following the survey of how the translations position themselves text-critically in these verses, the relationship between each translation’s position is addressed and discussed. The paper hereby seeks to understand these positions not so much as sharp contrasts, but rather as an outcome of certain mutual outsets. It is argued that the single most important outset for both translations is the historical-critical paradigm in biblical studies, with roots in the early modern era. Translations rejecting historical-critical biblical scholarship (Svenska Folkbibeln), as well as the ones embracing it (Bibel 2000), cannot fail to observe the basic premisses of this research paradigm. In other words, the text-critical positions investigated in the paper are unthinkable outside of this paradigm, which accordingly can be assessed as the single most important contextual factor shaping the text-critical positions of the translations under scrutiny.
