  • Achieving balance in everyday life : Insights from women with stress-related disorders
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Occupational Science. - Adelaide : Association of Occupational Science. - 1442-7591 .- 2158-1576. ; 13:1, s. 74-82
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is growing interest in developing a conceptual understanding of the experience of balance in everyday life, from an occupational perspective. The purpose of this study was to gain insights about balance in the everyday lives of women with stress-related disorders. Data were gathered from 19 women who were past the first phase of recovery from a stress-related disorder and participated in one of five focus groups. Analysis revealed that the participants experienced a continuum between imbalance and balance in everyday life. The themes that emerged were image of occupational self, strategies to manage and control everyday life, occupational repertoire, and occupational experience. Balance in everyday life was achieved through a dynamic interaction between these themes, which the women characterised as respecting their own values, needs, and resources; having strategies to manage and control everyday life; having a harmonious occupational repertoire; and engaging in personally meaningful occupation. Engagement in personally meaningful occupation appears to be a mechanism that enables people to achieve balance in everyday life by enabling them to develop a successful occupational selfimage, manageability, control, and a harmonious occupational repertoire. Well-being seems to be the outcome of balance in everyday life, and lack of balance is experienced as overload.

  • Well-being and occupational roles among middle-aged women
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Work. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 1051-9815 .- 1875-9270. ; 24:4, s. 341-351
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One purpose of the present study is to explore the stability of the pattern of health/work and sickness absence among middle-aged women over a period of three years. Two hypotheses were tested: 1. that enduringly healthy working women would perceive more valued occupational roles and higher well-being than long-term sick-listed women, and 2. that high levels of well-being at baseline would predict enduring health and occupational role value at a 3-year follow-up. Middle-aged women (n = 208) answered a postal survey with the Role checklist, a well-being scale and questions about work and sickness situation. The results showed that there was a considerable variability in the pattern of health/work and sickness absence. The results showed that the enduringly healthy women experienced a more valued worker role and higher well-being than the long-term sick-listed women. Furthermore, high levels of well-being concerning health and work predicted enduring health in the studied sample.

  • Information from health care professionals about sexual function and coexistence after myocardial infarction : a Swedish national survey
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Heart & Lung. - : Elsevier. - 0147-9563 .- 1527-3288. ; 38:4, s. 330-335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: After a myocardial infarction (MI), many patients and their partners experience problems with marital and sexual life.METHODS: A Swedish national survey was carried out to obtain knowledge on the information provided by cardiac health care professionals on the subject of sexual function and coexistence after an MI. It consisted of a questionnaire that was designed, tested, and sent to 121 coronary care units.RESULTS: The coronary care unit teams rarely provided oral or written information about sexual function and coexistence to patients with MI or their partners. The health care professionals lacked competence in these areas.CONCLUSION: It is essential that health care professionals are educated on and inform the patient with MI about the significance of sexual function and coexistence. Further research is required regarding patients' and their partners' need for information and support in this area.

  • Theory development in humanitarian logistics : A framework and three cases
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Management Research News. - : Emerald. - 0140-9174 .- 1758-6135. ; 32:11, s. 1008-1023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: There is a need for theory development within the field of humanitarian logistics to understand logistics needs in different stages of a crisis and how to meet these. This paper aims to discuss three dimensions identified in logistics and organization theories and how they relate to three different cases of humanitarian logistics operations - the regional concept of the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies, the development and working of the United Nations Joint Logistics Centre and coordination challenges of military logistics in UN mandated peacekeeping operations. The purpose is to build a framework to be used in further studies.Design/methodology/approach: A framework for the study of humanitarian logistics along three dimensions is developed, followed by a discussion of the chosen cases in relation to these dimensions. The framework will be used as basis for the case studies to be undertaken for the purpose of understanding and identification of new questions and needs for other or revised concepts from theory.Findings: The paper shows the relevance of a wide literature to the issues pertinent to humanitarian logistics. There is considerable promise in extant literature on logistics, SCM and coordination, but this needs to be confronted with the particular issues seen in the humanitarian logistics setting to achieve further theory development.Originality/value: The major contribution of the paper lies in its breadth of theoretical perspectives presented and combined in a preliminary theoretical framework. This is applied more specifically in the three case studies described in the paper.

  • Incidence of Lower Limb Amputation in the Diabetic and Nondiabetic General Population : A 10-year population-based cohort study of initial unilateral and contralateral amputations and reamputations
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Diabetes Care. - : American Diabetes Association. - 0149-5992 .- 1935-5548. ; 32:2, s. 275-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: To compare the incidence of vascular lower limb amputation (LLA) in the diabetic and nondiabetic general population. Research design & methods: A population-based cohort study was conducted in a representative Swedish region. All vascular LLA (at or proximal to transmetatarsal level) performed from 1997 through 2006 were consecutively registered and classified into initial unilateral amputation, contralateral amputation or re-amputation. The incidence rates were estimated in the diabetic and nondiabetic general population aged 45 years or older. Results: During the 10-year period, LLA was performed on 62 women and 71 men with diabetes and on 79 women and 78 men without diabetes. The incidence of initial unilateral amputation per 100,000 person-years (95% CI) was for diabetic women 192 (145-241) and for diabetic men 197 (152-244) and for nondiabetic women 22 (17-26) and for nondiabetic men 24 (19-29). The incidence increased from the age of 75 years. 74% of all amputations were transtibial. The incidence of contralateral amputation and of re-amputation per 100 amputee-years (95% CI) in diabetic women amputees was 15 (7-27) and 16 (8-28) and in diabetic men 18 (10-29) and 21 (12-32), respectively, and in nondiabetic women amputees were 14 (7-24) and 18 (10-28) and in men 13 (6-22) and 24 (15-35), respectively. Conclusions: In the general population aged 45 years or older the incidence of vascular lower limb amputation at or proximal to transmetatarsal level is 8 times higher in diabetic than in nondiabetic persons. One in four amputees may require contralateral amputation and/or re-amputation.

  • Explaining spatial patterns of innovation: analytical and synthetic modes of knowledge creation in the Medicon Valley life-science cluster
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Environment & Planning A. - : SAGE Publications. - 0308-518X .- 1472-3409. ; 40:5, s. 1040-1056
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The authors address the dichotomy around 'proximate' and 'distant' learning processes by looking specifically at the characteristics of the knowledge-creation process. By way of suggesting an alternative conceptualization to the well-known tacit-codified knowledge dichotomy, they propose a distinction between 'analytical' and 'synthetic' modes of knowledge creation. Analytical knowledge creation refers to the understanding and explaining of features of the (natural) world. Synthetic knowledge creation refers to the design or construction of something to attain functional goals. By applying this framework to qualitative empirics from the Medicon Valley life-science cluster, the authors demonstrate the complementarity of globally distributed analytical knowledge creation and locally oriented synthetic knowledge creation.

  • Knowledge collaboration and proximity - The spatial organization of biotech innovation projects
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: European Urban and Regional Studies. - : SAGE Publications. - 0969-7764 .- 1461-7145. ; 14:2, s. 115-131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the role of proximity for knowledge collaboration between dedicated biotechnology firms (DBFs) and related actors. Innovation projects managed by a selection of eight Swedish DBFs are analysed in detail and classified with regard to their specific knowledge characteristics. Based on this classification, explanations to the relative importance of functional and relational proximity to collaborators are sought. The findings indicate that knowledge collaboration in projects characterized by embodied knowledge are more sensitive to functional proximity than projects characterized by embrained and encoded knowledge. The findings also indicate that even though functional proximity is facilitative, global knowledge collaboration is indispensable for most DBFs. The convenience of local collaboration can never replace the extreme requirements of specialized knowledge, which forces them to seek collaborators on a global arena despite the impediments they face in these situations. Policy resources aimed at promoting bioregions are therefore better used to enhance local resources and to provide conditions for DBFs to link up with global sources of knowledge rather than to boost the formation of 'second best' local networks.

  • Principles and Practices of Knowledge Creation: On the Organization of "Buzz" and "Pipelines" in Life Science Communities
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Economic Geography. - : Wiley. - 0013-0095 .- 1944-8287. ; 84:4, s. 449-469
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article links up with the debate in economic geography on "local buzz" and "global pipelines" as two distinct forms of interactive knowledge creation among firms and related actors and argues for a rethinking of the way social scientists should approach interactive knowledge creation. It highlights the importance of combining the insights from studies of clusters and innovation systems with an activity-oriented approach in which more attention is paid to the specific characteristics of the innovation processes and the conditions underpinning their organization. To illustrate the applicability and added value of such an alternative approach, the notion of embeddedness is linked with some basic ideas adopted from the literature on knowledge communities. The framework is then applied to a study of innovation activities conducted by firms and academic research groups working with biotechnology-related applications in the Swedish part of the Medicon Valley life science region. The findings reveal that local buzz is largely absent in these types of activities. Most interactive knowledge creation, which appears to be spontaneous and unregulated, is, on closer examination, found safely embedded in globally configured professional knowledge communities and attainable only by those who qualify.
