- This thesis investigates the literary texts by Elgström in relation to the political, cultural and literary context of the years between 1910 and 1920.Among her contemporaries Elgström was important, but today she is completely unknown. The literary criticism of her time is one of the reasons why her writings have been transferred to the periphery. When she made her début, Elgström was very positively received. After that, the literary critics were not capable of seeing the innovative aspects of her prose of that period and a discussion of incomprehensibility was initiated, in which words like hysterical, extatic and exalted became catchwords. It appears that Elgström created a form of expression that was not yet accepted in literature. The male dominated literary criticism was at a loss and Elgström was ignored.The prose she wrote during the period in question has a distinctly experimental approach. In her literary texts, that are violating the standard conventions, Elgström appears as a female modernist and creates alternative images in the form of feminist and pacifist utopias. Expressionism is the modernist movement that can mainly be related to her prose of this period. Like the expressionists, she expresses a new sense of life which is permeated with religious conceptions.In the study the female modernism is seen in a feminist perspective, as well as in a perspective of gender theory where networks constitute an important basis. Elgström often worked in female networks and thus she became an important figure in the context of female literature and female politics of that time.By showing Elgström's kinship with the nation-wide early Swedish modernism, the Finno-Swedish modernism and the German expressionism, as well as by illustrating Elgström's position in the context of female literature and female politics of that time, the study contributes to a different image of the 1910s.

- This thesis contributes to the quality of engineering education and the accessibility of education worldwide by promoting computer-enhanced teaching and learning. It uses the epistemology of John Dewey (1859-1952) and the action research methodology first advanced by Kurt Lewin (1890-1947). A mixed methods approach that combines qualitative case studies with quantitative research methods is used.In the first of three case studies engineering students working on their final degree projects participated. To elicit interaction, a learning management system (LMS) was used and the students were strongly encouraged to discuss various aspects of their work.The second case focused on the barriers to a wider utilization of educational software in engineering education. The case is delimited to lecturers at the School of Engineering at the University of Borås. The investigation focuses on the lecturers’ reluctance to use educational technology and the slow uptake of new pedagogical methods in engineering education.The third case study covers three subsets of participants. A course intended to improve lecturers handling skills and motivation to utilize educational software in a pedagogically sound manner was given in Cuba, Guatemala and Peru.The first case demonstrated that computer-enhanced collaborative learning can improve the learning experience and performance of engineering students. The second case showed that LMS tools that facilitate traditional methods are used routinely, whereas lecturers often refrain from using features intended to facilitate collaboration and the creation of communities of learners.The third case study investigated the use of a complete course package, with all course material and software contained on the same USB drive (LiveUSB Mediated Education, LUME). It is asserted that LUME can facilitate constructivist pedagogical methods and help overcome the reluctance of lecturers to utilize educational software in a pedagogical sound way.

On Effectively Creating Ensembles of Classifiers : Studies on Creation Strategies, Diversity and Predicting with Confidence

- An ensemble is a composite model, combining the predictions from several other models. Ensembles are known to be more accurate than single models. Diversity has been identified as an important factor in explaining the success of ensembles. In the context of classification, diversity has not been well defined, and several heuristic diversity measures have been proposed. The focus of this thesis is on how to create effective ensembles in the context of classification. Even though several effective ensemble algorithms have been proposed, there are still several open questions regarding the role diversity plays when creating an effective ensemble. Open questions relating to creating effective ensembles that are addressed include: what to optimize when trying to find an ensemble using a subset of models used by the original ensemble that is more effective than the original ensemble; how effective is it to search for such a sub-ensemble; how should the neural networks used in an ensemble be trained for the ensemble to be effective? The contributions of the thesis include several studies evaluating different ways to optimize which sub-ensemble would be most effective, including a novel approach using combinations of performance and diversity measures. The contributions of the initial studies presented in the thesis eventually resulted in an investigation of the underlying assumption motivating the search for more effective sub-ensembles. The evaluation concluded that even if several more effective sub-ensembles exist, it may not be possible to identify which sub-ensembles would be the most effective using any of the evaluated optimization measures. An investigation of the most effective ways to train neural networks to be used in ensembles was also performed. The conclusions are that effective ensembles can be obtained by training neural networks in a number of different ways but that high average individual accuracy or much diversity both would generate effective ensembles. Several findings regarding diversity and effective ensembles presented in the literature in recent years are also discussed and related to the results of the included studies. When creating confidence based predictors using conformal prediction, there are several open questions regarding how data should be utilized effectively when using ensembles. Open questions related to predicting with confidence that are addressed include: how can data be utilized effectively to achieve more efficient confidence based predictions using ensembles; how do problems with class imbalance affect the confidence based predictions when using conformal prediction? Contributions include two studies where it is shown in the first that the use of out-of-bag estimates when using bagging ensembles results in more effective conformal predictors and it is shown in the second that a conformal predictor conditioned on the class labels to avoid a strong bias towards the majority class is more effective on problems with class imbalance. The research method used is mainly inspired by the design science paradigm, which is manifested by the development and evaluation of artifacts.

- The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate how future pre- and primary school mathematics teachers change their approaches to mathematics and mathematics education during their subject studies, and also how this view has affected their teaching of mathematics after graduation. A qualitative interview method was used in combination with observations, notes, sound recordings, video recorded mathematics classes and materials produced by the teacher in order to answer the research questions. The research was carried out in two parts. The institutional theory has been used as theoretical framework throughout. This perspective was supplemented by a design theoretical perspective in part two. In the first investigation it became clear that the language used by the students is under change, and that they use terms from the national curriculum as well as the aims of the programme syllabus when they discuss mathematics teaching. The results from the observations later show that four out of five of the teachers have a clear connection to the sort of teaching they said they want to conduct, in that there is a clear relationship between the sort of teaching that they claim to perform and the sort of teaching they actually perform. From the overall results, it is apparent that teachers one year after graduation describe that they feel well prepared for teaching mathematics in preschool and primary school. This is interesting in the light of their dissatisfaction with the limited emphasis on concrete recommendations and "tips" directly after their graduation. In fact, the teachers said that in practice it turned out that their education provided a more stable and secure foundation than they described it to be shortly after having completed their mathematics studies. They say that during their education they developed knowledge and skills that enabled them to be better prepared for their future work roles than they believed themselves likely to become.

The Rise of Luxury Brands Online : A study of how a sense of luxury brand is created in an online environment

- Luxury brands have only recently tapped into the online market in an attempt to increase revenues and expand their businesses. This leap onto the online world has resulted in several new challenges, including the luxury brand paradox. The luxury brand paradox concerns the inherent difficulty for luxury brands to increase sales and expand their customer base while simultaneously maintaining an aura of mystery and exclusivity. The openness and accessibility of the Internet are believed to pose an extra challenging environment for luxury brands. This research explores how a sense of luxury brand is created in an online environment. Using methodology comprised of different online methods to comprehend what is taking place online, this study primarily concentrates on visual imagery and online communication. The online world of luxury brands is conceptualized into three distinct categories: brand websites, counterfeit websites and community websites. Using these three categories, the thesis demonstrates what role they each play in the creation of a sense of luxury brand. From this analysis, four themes emerge on the sense of a luxury brand (luxury history, authenticity, community and paradox). The concept of an online fair is used to illustrate the environment of luxury brands on the Internet. The online fair consists of a confluence of people involved in it as well as the various activities they perform. In addition, the fairground where the people participate and the activities that take place are described. In conclusion, this thesis proposes a move from the identity-image construct toward a view of handling and co-creation of sense of brand.
