  • Ramifications for Western Firms of Navigating Through Innovation Spaces in Asia
  • 2015
  • In: McKelvey, M. and Bagchi-Sen, S. (2015). Innovation Spaces in Asia: Entrepreneurs, Multinational Enterprises and Policy. - Cheltenham, U.K. : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781783475674 ; , s. 333-353
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter draws upon a line of research to propose a conceptualization of innovation spaces, and focuses upon the implications for Asia. The main perspective taken in this chapter – and most of the book – is the firm perspective, requiring micro-data and a deep understanding set in a context, and this can be analyzed both through case studies and through quantitative data of macro trends and later, econometric techniques to test hypotheses.

  • COVID-19: From health crises to food security anxiety and policy implications
  • 2021
  • In: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 50, s. 794-811
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Like the rest of the world, African countries are reeling from the health, economic and social effects of COVID-19. The continent's governments have responded by imposing rigorous lockdowns to limit the spread of the virus. The various lockdown measures are undermining food security, because stay at home orders have among others, threatened food production for a continent that relies heavily on agriculture as the bedrock of the economy. This article draws on quantitative data collected by the GeoPoll, and, from these data, assesses the effect of concern about the local spread and economic impact of COVID-19 on food worries. Qualitative data comprising 12 countries south of the Sahara reveal that lockdowns have created anxiety over food security as a health, economic and human rights/well-being issue. By applying a probit model, we find that concern about the local spread of COVID-19 and economic impact of the virus increases the probability of food worries. Governments have responded with various efforts to support the neediest. By evaluating the various policies rolled out we advocate for a feminist economics approach that necessitates greater use of data analytics to predict the likely impacts of intended regulatory relief responses during the recovery process and post-COVID-19.

  • Contending Global Apartheid : Transversal Solidarities and Politics of Possibility
  • 2023
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Contending Global Apartheid: Transversal Solidarities and Politics of Possibility spells out a plea for utopia in a crisis-ridden 21st century of unequal development, exclusionary citizenship, and forced migrations. The volume offers a collection of critical essays on human rights movements, sanctuary spaces, and the emplacement of antiracist conviviality in cities across North and South America, Europe, and Africa. Each intervention proceeds from the idea that cities may accommodate both a humanistic sensibility and a radical potential for social transformation. The figure of the 'migrant' is pivotal. It expounds the prospect of transversal solidarity to capture a plurality of commonalities and to abjure dichotomies between in-group and out-group, the national and the international, or society and institutions.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the contemporary market-oriented society, we seem to be more globally interdependent. The market economy system enhances large-scale production where search for increased productivity strives to 'compress' time. At the same time, the market economy tends to expand in space, for example sells products over longer distances. A result of this 'space expansion' and 'time compression' through the conventional economic market system is that local small-scale production and trade have increasing difficulty in competing and surviving (Assmo and Wihlborg, 2007). Even so, conventional economic growth (valued in monetary terms) is commonly seen as the only way to cure any development problem arising from poverty, unemployment, crime, pollution and depletion of natural resources. In a provocative manner similar to Daly (1992), one can argue that this conventional monetary valued growth perspective is trapped in a terminal state of 'growthmania'. People's organization of daily activities to improve or sustain their livelihood is much more than what is generally calculated and thereby shown in monetary values.

  • Urban Rural Gothenburg : What? How? For whom?
  • 2018
  • In: Stadslandet Half-time Conference, Business Region Gothenburg, Lärjeåns Trädgårdar, 26 September 2018, Angered, Sweden.
  • Conference paper (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • Wicked problems are problems that have many dimensions, are hard to pin down and consequently are extremely challenging to solve. As there are no winning formulas, there is a need for different approaches towards a sustainable future where wicked problems are no more. Gothenburg, like several other European cities, experiences big gaps between its geographical areas and sectors of society. Especially the city's northeastern parts grapple with uneven development induced by unreleased social capital through failed integration and unexploited green areal resources. Onto this arena enters the project Urban Rural Gothenburg, although with a strikingly different agenda. Rather than yet again rehearse familiar policies of unrestrained openness and multiculturalism, the project consciously eschews this rhetoric and instead focuses on achieving socioeconomic sustainability for all through improved conditions for green innovation and green business development. It also aims to link the physical and conceptual boundaries between the city and the countryside, given that the North-East of Gothenburg forms a transitional zone between the two spheres. As such, the project attempts to think outside the box by indirectly capturing several wicked problems at once, including poverty, migration, food injustice, ethnic tensions, climate change and informality. This presentation focuses on the methodologies involved that can help contribute to the development of new knowledge and new ways of local economic development while maintaining a low-carbon impact with beneficial outcomes for every citizen.

  • Migration, Civil Society and Global Governance
  • 2019. - 1
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • How do the United Nations, international organizations, governments, corporate actors and a wide variety of civil society organizations and regional and global trade unions perceive the root causes of migration, global inequality and options for sustainable development? This is one of the most pertinent political questions of the 21st century. This comprehensive collection examines the development of an emerging global governance on migration with the focus on spaces, roles, strategies and alliance-making of a composite transnational civil society engaged in issues of rights and the protection of migrants and their families. It reveals the need to strengthen networking and convergence among movements that adopt different entry points to the same struggle, from fighting ‘managed’ migration to contesting corporate control of food and land. The authors examine the opportunities and challenges faced by civil society in its endeavour to promote a rights-based approach within international and intergovernmental fora engaged in setting up a global compact for the management of migration, such as the Global Forum for Migration and Development, and in other global policy spaces. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Globalizations.

  • Larmar och gör sig till
  • 2017
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
