  • Recursive Maximum Likelihood Identification of Jump Markov Nonlinear Systems
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 63:3, s. 754-765
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an online method for joint state and parameter estimation in jump Markov non-linear systems (JMNLS). State inference is enabled via the use of particle filters which makes the method applicable to a wide range of non-linear models. To exploit the inherent structure of JMNLS, we design a Rao-Blackwellized particle filter (RBPF) where the discrete mode is marginalized out analytically. This results in an efficient implementation of the algorithm and reduces the estimation error variance. The proposed RBPF is then used to compute, recursively in time, smoothed estimates of complete data sufficient statistics. Together with the online expectation maximization algorithm, this enables recursive identification of unknown model parameters including the transition probability matrix. The method is also applicable to online identification of jump Markov linear systems(JMLS). The performance of the method is illustrated in simulations and on a localization problem in wireless networks using real data.

  • Implementing organization and management innovations in Swedish healthcare : Lessons from a comparison of 12 cases
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Organization & Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-7266 .- 1758-7247. ; 26:2, s. 237-257
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to compare the implementation of twelve different "organization and management innovations" (OMIs) in Swedish healthcare, to discover the generic and specific factors important for successful healthcare improvement change in a public health system.Design/methodology/approach: Longitudinal cross-case comparison of twelve case studies was employed, where each case study used a common framework for collecting data about the process of change, the content of change, the context and the intermediate and final outcomes.Findings: Clinical leaders played a more important part in the development of these successful service innovations than managers. Strategies for and patterns of change implementation were found to differ according to the type of innovation. Internal organisational context factors played a significant role in the development of nearly all, but external factors did not. "Developmental evolution" better described the change process than "implementation".Research limitations/implications: The 12 cases were all of relatively successful change processes: some unsuccessful examples would have provided additional testing of of the hypotheses about what would predict successful innovation which were used in the case comparison. The cross-case comparative hypothesis testing method allows systematic comparison if the case data are collected using similar frameworks, but this approach to management research requires considerable resources and coordination.Practical implications: Management innovations that improve patient care can be carried out successfully by senior clinicians, under certain circumstances. A systematic approach is important both for developing and adapting an innovation to a changing situation. A significant amount of time was required for all involved, which could be reduced by "fast-tracking" approval for some type of change.Originality/value: This is the first empirical report comparing longitudinal and contextualised findings from a number of case studies of different organisational and management healthcare innovations. The findings made possible explanations for success factors and useful practical recommendations for conditions needed to nurture such innovation in public healthcare.

  • Writing a scientific publication for a management journal
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of health organization and management. - : Emerald. - 1477-7266. ; 22:2, s. 189-206
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to stimulate debate about criteria for assessing the scientific contribution of a piece of management research and to guide and encourage researchers in writing papers for publication. The paper also seeks to reduce the number of papers submitted to journals and reviewers which are really unfinished early drafts or which do provide knowledge which could contribute to reducing suffering.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on and discusses the difference between practical research for a manager and scientific research, as well as the author's experience as researcher, writer, reviewer, editor, research methods course leader and director of research.FindingsThe discussion highlights that the author should draft the paper under the suggested headings and fulfil criteria of validity, reliability, supported conclusions, generalisability, ensuring that each section follows on from the other, and that the findings are related to previous research.Research limitations/implicationsThis is the author's personal view about how to carry out and write research to get published, without discussions of other views.Practical implicationsThe findings in this paper may provoke more debate about management science and the role of this journal. The guidance may help many researchers publish their management research.Originality/valueThe paper links practical guidance with discussion of criteria for scientific contribution in a readable way.

  • Estetisk och kosmetisk tandvård. Nytt och unikt eller gamla metoder som vidareutvecklats?
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Tandläkartidningen. - 0039-6982. ; 97:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Late Work in Sweden: Exit Pathways Express Unequal Exclusion Risks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies. - Denmark : VIA University College, Denmark. - 2245-0157. ; 13:3, s. 23-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on Swedish National Registry Data, this paper investigates the social structure of exclusion risks in late working life in Sweden by analyzing exit from working life, employment breaks, and late employment trajectories according to gender and education. Individuals born in 1950 (n = 107,830) are followed between the years 2010 and 2018. Results show that women with low education exit working life earlier and have a higher risk of employment breaks due to reduced working ability, while men with low education have a higher risk of employment breaks due to unemployment. Men in general and people with high education have a higher probability of moving to self-employment in late working life. We conclude that research and social policies require an understanding of multifarious late work trajectories to unearth the inequality of exclusion risks in the late phases of working life and the potential for interventions towards equal and inclusive prolongation.

  • Small molecule detection by lateral flow strips via aptamer-gated silica nanoprobes.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The Analyst. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 0003-2654 .- 1364-5528. ; 141:8, s. 2595-9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A fast, sensitive and ratiometric biosensor strategy for small molecule detection was developed through nanopore actuation. The new platform engineers together, a highly selective molecular recognition element, aptamers, and a novel signal amplification mechanism, gated nanopores. As a proof of concept, aptamer gated silica nanoparticles have been successfully used as a sensing platform for the detection of ATP concentrations at a wide linear range from 100 μM up to 2 mM.

  • Genomic and functional analysis of microRNAs and PIWI-interacting RNAs in human cancers
  • 2015
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Small non-coding RNAs, including microRNAs (miRNAs) and piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), play an important role in gene expression regulation and are involved in many biological and pathological processes. Study of small RNA expression and function in cancer cells could contribute to greater understanding of how small RNAs are involved in cancer development. The main goal of this thesis work was to investigate the expression and functions of these small RNAs in adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) and testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs). In Paper I, we identified a set of miRNAs that could distinguish ACC from its normal and benign counterparts. miR-483-3p, miR-483-5p, miR-21 and miR-210 expressions were higher, while miR-195 and miR-497 were lower in ACC. Suppression of miR-483-3p and over-expression of miR-195 or miR-497 reduces cell proliferation and increases apoptosis in ACC cells. The protein expression of PUMA, a target of miR-483-3p, is down-regulated in ACC and inversely correlated with the increased expression of miR-483-3p. Additionally, increased expressions of miR-503, miR-1202, and miR-1275 are associated with short overall survival of ACC patients. In Paper II, we evaluated the expression levels of core components of miRNA biogenesis in ACC. We observed significant increased expressions of TARBP2, DICER and DROSHA in ACC as compared to benign tumors or adrenal cortices. Higher TARBP2 mRNA is a strong predictor for the discrimination of ACC from the non-carcinoma cases. Suppression of TARBP2 decreases cell proliferation and increases apoptosis in ACC cells. We also demonstrate that copy number gain of TARBP2 gene and its regulation by miR-195 and miR-497 could contribute to TARBP2 overexpression in ACC. In Paper III, we identified a set of deregulated miRNAs (including reduced expression of miR-506~514 cluster and increased expressions of miR-21 and miR-223) in TGCT. Overexpression of miR-514a-3p, a member of miR-506~514 cluster, inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in TGCT cell lines. The apoptotic effect of miR-514a-3p is mediated through direct regulation of PEG3. Silencing of PEG3 or overexpression of miR-514a-3p leads to reduced nuclear accumulation of p50 and NF- κB reporter activity, suggesting that miR-514a-3p and PEG3 play a role in NF- κB pathway. Importantly, high expression of PEG3 and nuclear p50 were found in a large proportion of TGCT samples. In Paper IV, we show that global piRNA expression is down-regulated in both human and mouse TGCTs compared to normal testes. Using high-throughput sequencing approaches, we demonstrate that most piRNA precursor transcripts were present and transcriptionally active in TGCTs. Our RNA sequencing data indicate that the piRNA biogenesis factors MOV10L1, DDX4, MAEL, PIWIL3, and TDRD6 were significantly down-regulated in TGCTs, suggesting loss of piRNA expression in TGCT is likely due to impaired processing of piRNA precursors. Overall, this thesis work describes the biological and clinical role of small RNAs and deregulation of their processing factors in both human ACC and TGCTs.

  • Once upon a tıme, there was a terms of service (ToS)
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to different online sources, an average person has between 40 to 60 apps installed on their smart phones in 2021, meaning an average person has likely agreed to 40 to 60 terms of services (ToS). While it has become a common practice to just accept the terms without reading, we have also started to see an emergence of consciousness regarding the ToS. Some of us in fact read, try to read, accept, reject, think or ask questions about ToSs after reading them. This moment aims to collect stories about our interactions with the ToSs, the experiences that had an impact on our lives, perspectives, interactions with things, services, or people, as well as the ToSs we dream of or want to speculate about. So, the moment will collect reflections on the real and the fiction.
