    • OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the presence of the microorganisms Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, human papillomavirus (HPV), and the polyomaviruses BK virus (BKV) and JC virus (JCV) in ovarian tissues of women with ovarian carcinomas, borderline tumors, and benign conditions. STUDY DESIGN: Ovarian tissue, snap-frozen and stored at -80 degrees C, from 186 women with benign conditions, borderline tumors, and epithelial ovarian cancer, as well as tissue from the contralateral ovary of 126 of these women, were analyzed regarding presence of C trachomatis and N gonorrhoeae (transcription mediated amplification), M genitalium (real-time polymerase chain reaction [PCR]), HPV (PCR), and BKV and JCV (PCR). RESULTS: All the tissue samples studied were found negative for the microorganisms analyzed. CONCLUSION: C trachomatis, M genitalium, N gonorrhoeae, HPV, and the polyomaviruses BKV and JCV are not detectable in ovarian tissues either from women with benign conditions and borderline tumors or from women with ovarian cancer.

  • Kinematics of fast cervical rotations in persons with chronic neck pain : a cross-sectional and reliability study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders. - : BioMed Central. - 1471-2474. ; 11, s. 222-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • BackgroundAssessment of sensorimotor function is useful for classification and treatment evaluation of neck pain disorders. Several studies have investigated various aspects of cervical motor functions. Most of these have involved slow or self-paced movements, while few have investigated fast cervical movements. Moreover, the reliability of assessment of fast cervical axial rotation has, to our knowledge, not been evaluated before.MethodsCervical kinematics was assessed during fast axial head rotations in 118 women with chronic nonspecific neck pain (NS) and compared to 49 healthy controls (CON). The relationship between cervical kinematics and symptoms, self-rated functioning and fear of movement was evaluated in the NS group. A sub-sample of 16 NS and 16 CON was re-tested after one week to assess the reliability of kinematic variables. Six cervical kinematic variables were calculated: peak speed, range of movement, conjunct movements and three variables related to the shape of the speed profile.ResultsTogether, peak speed and conjunct movements had a sensitivity of 76% and a specificity of 78% in discriminating between NS and CON, of which the major part could be attributed to peak speed (NS: 226 ± 88 °/s and CON: 348 ± 92 °/s, p < 0.01). Peak speed was slower in NS compared to healthy controls and even slower in NS with comorbidity of low-back pain. Associations were found between reduced peak speed and self-rated difficulties with running, performing head movements, car driving, sleeping and pain. Peak speed showed reasonably high reliability, while the reliability for conjunct movements was poor.ConclusionsPeak speed of fast cervical axial rotations is reduced in people with chronic neck pain, and even further reduced in subjects with concomitant low back pain. Fast cervical rotation test seems to be a reliable and valid tool for assessment of neck pain disorders on group level, while a rather large between subject variation and overlap between groups calls for caution in the interpretation of individual assessments.

  • A translation of worlds : Aspects of cultural translation and Australian migration literature
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study explores the exchange of cultural information that takes place in the meeting between immigrant and non-immigrant characters in a selection of Australian novels focusing on the theme of migration: Heartland (1989) by Angelika Fremd, A Change of Skies (1991) by Yasmine Gooneratne, Stella’s Place (1998) by Jim Sakkas, Hiam (1998) by Eva Sallis and Love and Vertigo (2000) by Hsu-Ming Teo. The concept cultural translation functions as a theoretical tool in the analyses. The translation model is particularly useful for this purpose since it parallels the migration process and emphasises the power relations involved in cultural encounters. Within the framework of the study, cultural translation is defined as making an unfamiliar cultural phenomenon familiar to someone. On the intratextual level of the text, the characters take on roles as translators and interpreters and make use of certain tools such as storytelling and food to effect translation. On the extratextual level, Fremd, Gooneratne, Sakkas, Sallis and Teo represent cultural translation in the four thematic areas the immigrant child, storytelling, food and life crisis. The first theme, the immigrant child, examined in chapter one, explores the effects of using the immigrant child as translator in communication situations between immigrants and representatives of Australian public institutions. In these situations, the child becomes the adult’s interpreter of the Australian target culture. The role as translator entails other roles such as a link to and a shield against the Australian society and, as a result, traditional power relations are reversed. Chapter two analyses how the second theme, storytelling, is presented as an instrument for cultural education and cultural translation in the texts. Storytelling functions to transfer power relations and resistance from one generation to the next. Through storytelling, the immigrant’s hybrid identity is maintained because the connection to the source culture is strengthened, both for the storyteller and the listener. The third theme, food as a symbol of cultural identity and as representation of the source and target cultures, is explored in chapter three. Source and target food cultures are polarised in the novels, and through an acceptance or a rejection of food from the source or target cultures, the characters symbolically accept or reject a belonging to that particular cultural environment. A fusion between the source and target food cultures emphasises the immigrant characters’ cultural hybridity and functions as a strategic marketing of culturally specific elements during which a specific source culture is translated to a target consumer. Finally, the fourth theme, life crisis, is analysed in chapter four where it is a necessary means through which the characters experience a second encounter with Australia and Australians. While their first encounter with Australia traps the characters in a liminal space/phase that is signified by cultural distancing, the second encounter offers a desire and ability for cultural translation, an acceptance of cultural hybridity and the possibility to become translated beings – a state where the characters are able to translate back and forth between the source and target cultures.

  • Pregnancy Rate and Outcome in Swedish Women With Turner Syndrome EDITORIAL COMMENT
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Obstetrical and Gynecological Survey. - 0029-7828 .- 1533-9866. ; 66:12, s. 756-757
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The rate of spontaneous pregnancies in women with Turner syndrome (TS) is low (2% to 5%). Oocyte donation is an option for these women and enables many to become pregnant. Some investigators question the use of pregnancy induction in TS because of the high risk for aortic dissection or other serious cardiac events. A cardiac evaluation is recommended before pregnancy is planned in TS. Among patients with TS who use their own oocytes to become pregnant, 45% suffered a miscarriage. The aim of this study was to assess pregnancy rate and outcome in a population of Swedish women with spontaneous pregnancies or who were induced using donated oocytes. Cytogenetic karyotype also was examined; mosaicism was defined as the presence of more than 5% 46, XX cells. The study subjects were 482 women with TS who had participated in a voluntary screening program conducted at Swedish Turner Centers. Among the 482 women with TS, 57 (12%) had pregnancies, including spontaneous pregnancies. The live-born rate was 67 of 124 (54%). The patient's own oocytes were used in 27 (47%) of the pregnancies and oocyte donation in 30 (53%) of pregnancies. Spontaneous pregnancies occurred in 23 of 57 women (40%) with TS. Most pregnancies using the patient's own oocytes occurred in those with 45, X/46, XX mosaic karyotype. The miscarriage rate was 26% after oocyte donation and 45% with the use of the patient's own oocytes. Five liveborns (7%) had birth defects or a serious illness; 4 of these were born after spontaneous pregnancies. Only 1 live-born had coarctation of the aorta.
