  • Attenuation of biologically effective UV doses under overcast skies: a case study from the eastern Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Deep-Sea Research Part Ii-Topical Studies in Oceanography. - : Elsevier BV. - 0967-0645. ; 51:22-24, s. 2673-2682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study deals attenuation of ultraviolet solar radiation measured during the SWEDARP 1997/1998 expedition in the eastern Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. Experimental data were measured on board a ship and theoretical computation of radiative transfer has been applied. Focus has been placed on biologically effective UV-B doses using three commonly applied biological weighting functions based on: inhibition of carbon dioxide fixation (Science 258 (1992) 646); Generalized plant effects (Stratospheric Ozone Reduction, Solar Ultraviolet Radiation and Plant Life 1986, Springer, Berlin) and DNA lesions (Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. USA 71 (1974) 3363). The ratio of measured dose to that under clear sky condition, calculated by a model, was defined as transmittance which was studied in relation to other information. Further, the interrelationship between the biologically effective UV doses and various broadband irradiance in the UV-A, UV-B and PAR was established. It shows that the UV-B doses based on the three weighting functions are closely linked to each other and their cloud transmittances are nearly the same. The biologically effective UV-B doses can be estimated with reasonable accuracy from the broadband irradiance in the UV-A, UV-B and PAR regions, with UV-B giving the best results. Univariate analysis between the transmittance and zenith angle, total cloud cover and cloud base height was performed. It is found that attenuation is almost independent of zenith angle. Transmission is reduced by 7.7% if the cloud cover is increased by one octa. The average transmittance of the UV-B doses is 0.40, indicating that clouds have played an important role in reducing the UV radiation. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Climate-induced variability of sea level in Stockholm: Influence of air temperature and atmospheric circulation
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Advances in Atmospheric Sciences. - 0256-1530. ; 22:5, s. 655-664
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is focused on climate-induced variation of sea level in Stockholm during 1873-1995. After the effect of the land uplift is removed, the residual is characterized and related to large-scale temperature and atmospheric circulation. The residual shows an overall upward trend, although this result depends on the uplift rate used. However, the seasonal distribution of the trend is uneven. There are even two months (June and August) that show a negative trend. The significant trend in August may be linked to fresh water input that is controlled by precipitation. The influence of the atmospheric conditions on the sea level is mainly manifested through zonal winds, vorticity and temperature. While the wind is important in the period January-May, the vorticity plays a main role during June and December. A successful linear multiple-regression model linking the climatic variables (zonal winds, vorticity and mean air temperature during the previous two months) and the sea level is established for each month. An independent verification of the model shows that it has considerable skill in simulating the variability.

  • European Trend Atlas of Extreme Temperature and Precipitation Records
  • 2015
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This Atlas presents records of climatic variability and change in Europe starting before 1901 and focuses especially on trends of extreme temperatures and precipitation. The authors have used software developed within EMULATE (European and North Atlantic daily to MULtidecadal climATE variability) to obtain the extremes indices and temporal trends. The trend atlas provides an easy way to identify spatial patterns for a given time period, region, season, and index. The Atlas clearly shows that climate in Europe has changed over the last 100 to 150 years, such that the occurrence and intensity of warm temperature extremes have increased. Precipitation extremes have also changed, but with a less clear pattern compared to the temperature extremes.

  • Hydroclimate changes over Sweden in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries: a millennium perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Geografiska Annaler: Series A, Physical Geography. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0435-3676 .- 1468-0459. ; 103:2, s. 103-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change poses additional risks for natural and human systems including the hydrological cycle, leading to altered temporal and spatial variation of hydroclimatic conditions. This work assessed the current understanding of the dryness and wetness conditions in Sweden over the last two millenniums based on proxy and instrumental data, as well as climate model simulations and projections until the end of the twenty-first century. The assessment represents a summary of the existing literature concerning analysis of four selected indices for dry/wet conditions relating to precipitation, potential evapotranspiration (PET), and soil moisture (SPEI, PDSI [including scPDSI], SPI, and AI). SPEI considers both precipitation and PET and can show hydroclimatic conditions at different time scales. Therefore, it was chosen to summarize the past and future changes. A focus is put on dry conditions, as drought has strong influences on groundwater which is an important freshwater resource for Sweden. The millennium historical perspective reveals that the current climate is relatively wet and the future would become even wetter as a general wetting trend started some 120 years ago. However, there have been and will be large variations of both dry and wet conditions on short time scales, especially on decadal and interannual time scales. Further, the changes since the 1950s show a regional pattern with most significant wetting in the north, a slightly overall wetting in the south but a drying in central-eastern part including the island of Gotland since 1981. This pattern is broadly consistent with climate model projections for the future.
