  • Svensk barnmatsmärkning : En diskursanalytisk studie av märkningens design och tillgänglighet
  • 2000
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The report reviews a study of the design and accessibility of Swedish baby food labels for infant formula, gruel, and baby porridge. As the study was carried out within an EU-project in which four other European countries participated, comparisons with results from these countries are made. The final chapter of the report contains recommendations for the improvement of the accessibility of the Swedish labels. The theoretical approach to accessibility is that of discourse analysis. For this reason, the study incorporates the producers of the labels, i.e. the manufacturers and the advertising agencies, the linguistic and semiotic construction of the labels themselves, and the readers of the labels.Only a few potential accessibility problems on the labels were identified in the label analysis. This result was confirmed by a consumer study, in which it was concluded that the labels caused no major accessibility problems to the average consumer. However, parents that were not native speakers of Swedish tended to think that the labels were more difficult to understand than native speakers of Swedish.Further, the analysis of the labels showed that the gruel and porridge labels tend, with a few exceptions, to be more sales oriented than the infant formula labels. The comparisons with results from the other EU-countries showed that the Swedish labels as a whole contained fewer commercial and potentially misleading features than the labels from the other countries.

  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The article reviews an analysis of the textual construction of Swedish baby food labels for infant formula, gruel and baby porridge. The analysis was performed as part of an EU-project called "Design and accessibility of baby food labelling from the consumer’s point of view" in which, in addition to Sweden, four other European countries participated.Swedish and European labelling legislation forms the foundation for the analysis. Certain information, such as a list of ingredients and preparation instructions, is obligatory on the labels, while other information is prohibited. Examples of prohibited information include pictures or text, which may idealise the use of the product, on infant formula labels. The methodological approach in the article is partly discourse analytical, because the labels are related to a number of contexts, and partly semiotic, because of the multimodal character of the labels. It is revealed that there are differences concerning the choice of words and pictures on the labels in the three different product categories. The Swedish gruel and porridge labels tend, with a few exceptions, to be more sales oriented than the infant formula labels, including, for example, a more frequent use of emotive and evaluative words, and a larger number of pictures of smiling parents and babies.

  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In the thesis, the conditions, possibilities, and limitations for Swedish environmental organisations to influence other actors — state agencies, political organisations, enterprises and the Swedish public — are analysed. The focus is on their practice in the nineties, implying a context in which different actors, to a greater extent, have accepted the significance of environmental issues, demand knowledge of and solutions to environmental problems, and with new conflicts continously arising. Against this background, four main interrelated themes are developed. Firstly, focus is set on the diversity and internal relations of the movement itself. Heterogeneity, variation and internal relations are analysed through the use of concepts such as social movement, collective identity, and niche. The diversity of the movement is regarded as a source of strength even though it also produces limitations. Secondly, how environmental organisations act politically and in what political scenes they appear, are analysed through the use of concepts such as political opportunity structure, subpolitics, lifepolitics, risk definition struggle, and intermediary link. The use of combined strategies, as well as the relation between diversity and political action, are highlighted. Thirdly, the cognitive practice of environmental organisations is analysed. This entails analysing how they try to persuade other actors with the help of frames. The extensive use of frame bridgings as well as tendencies towards the use of more cooperative strategies — captured by the concept ecological modernization — provide opportunities but also imply threats against autonomy and critical distance. However, the study shows that the organisations have the capacity to preserve their cognitive autonomy. Fourthly, the importance of organisation for cognitive practice, autonomy, and resource mobilization is stressed, and variations in form are analysed. Certain organisational tendencies such as growth, routinization, and professionalization are highlighted. The study is based on intensive comparative case studies of five Swedish environmental organisations: Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, World Wide Fund for Nature, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Natural Step. Different kinds of data are used: interviews with keypersons in the organisations, analyses of different kinds of documents produced by the organisations, and different kinds of secondary litterature.
